  1. To quote your linked article.... [Thankfully, you can turn Bluetooth and Wi-Fi back on without exiting Airplane Mode. To do so, tap the relevant icon in your notification shade by swiping down from the top on an Android device or swiping up from the bottom to access the Control Center on an iOS device.] Airplane mode is ultimately the disabling of the phones capacity to connect to a cell network. The debate it pretty moot an pointless - The Op can use his phone in Airplane mode and use WiFi for calls etc... (WiFi calling, WhatsApp, Line etc)... Everyone knows this and arguing the semantics of ‘Airplane mode’ is just a little bit silly particularly when the first paragraph in the article is contradicted later on....
  2. If they knew how to use a multimeter they’d not need to ‘thieve’ as they’d have firm career prospects being more qualified than half the nations electricians !!!!
  3. I’ve heard the same before... However Thailand is a signatory of the 1968 Vienna convention which supersedes the 1949 Geneva convention on road traffic. Somewhat moot though as Thailand is also a signatory of the 1949 Geneva convention on road traffic. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vienna_Convention_on_Road_Traffic https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geneva_Convention_on_Road_Traffic Superseding this is the Thai Motor vehicle traffic act 1979 (Title 3) [Section 42-2: In case there’s a treaty between the Thai government and a foreign government regarding mutual acceptance of driver’s license, an alien who doesn’t have an immigrant visa may drive a motor vehicle with a driver’s license issued by such a foreign government, or an automobile association authorized by such a foreign government.] Which basically means - if you have an Overseas licence from one of the 1949 or 1968 convention signed countries - you’re good to go if your licence is in English and has a photo (you don’t need an IDP).
  4. Extremely simple - all thats needed to own a car, or more accurately have a car registered in your name is a Certificate of Residence.... The CoR is available from ‘some’ Immigration offices on a Tourist Visa (or visa exempt). The Affirmation of Residence letter is available from ‘some’ embassies on a Tourist Visa (or visa exempt).
  5. Pattaya may be different I suppose, but I’ve never needed a Certificate of Residence to sell my car. Only ever needed... Copy of Passport ID page and Copy of Visa stamp. The CoR is required if registering the car in your name... (not when ‘de-registering' - your address is irrelevant at that point).
  6. None... The DL is your name, your DOB, your photo... Its your licence. Come renewal you just renew with your updated passport, thats all. I’ve had driving licences for years on multiple passports (with a different number) over the same period - never an issue with a new passport.
  7. Wife is correct - there are two separate licences for Motorcycles and Cars. - Translation of home country driving licence ? - which country is it ? IF in English its already ok IF your country is signatory to 1968 Vienna convention on road traffic. IF in a foreign language you’ll need an IDP.
  8. Definitely not a DOT approved helmet like I use from the US. I doubt any helmet can withstand the weight of a lorry...
  9. Did the lorry driver even know he’d been involved in an incident ??? As tragical and sad as it is, he could easily have just thought something was a bump in the road and he thought nothing more of it... I’m not defending the lorry driver, but neither am I hanging him high - he may not be at fault and may well not have known anything about the incident.
  10. What a wild hypothetical guess. Many just get plain run over if you understand Thailand. IF YOU understand ‘Thailand’ you’ll realise that the ‘hypothesis’ is not a hypothesis at all but a day to day observation of motorcyclists Thailand - if you’ve not witnessed this behaviour of motorcyclists in Thailand you ether do not drive here or don’t pay attention.... There have been numerous such incidents posted with videos on this forum. Daily, I see motorcyclists ’squeezing’ up the inside of motorists in cars, delivery trucks and lorries... This is why when turning left I have to come to a near standstill for the inevitable motorcyclist that has tried to squeeze up the inside... it happens all the time. Again: I have to repeat I’m not making the suggestion that this is what happened to the deceased and she may well have been ‘run over’ by lorry which didn’t see her, didn’t stop for her or give way for her... But, we don’t know that either. Did the lorry driver ‘escape the scene’ ??? did he even know he’d hit a motorcyclist ?... it seems many do not, as is the common story on other reports we read on in the news... motorcyclists flattened, the lorry driver unaware he’d run over someone and though it was a bump in the road etc...
  11. No hotter than the Colemans gloop you mentioned... Have you tried one before that you like and are looking for? perhaps upload a photo of this ‘hot stuff’ you are after....
  12. My Credit card provides me with two free recovery services per year. The’ll come within the hour and put the vehicle on the flatbet and take it to whichever garage you want (within reason of courses)... I’ve used it 3x in the past - for a motorcycle and car. ------ Are we to believe that once the flood waters were encroaching and everyone was moving their cars the brilliant minds at the police station didn’t consider calling the recovery service to move their car ????...... Question is rhetorical of course... but this shows us exactly how lazy they are.
  13. The law is clear, a Thai citizen or somebody with permanent residency status needs to have a Thai license. How clear or unambiguous or non vague is the Thai in that specific law regarding the meaning of ‘resident’ in the Thai writing of this law (I’m not sure). It was once explained to me that it means.... someone with a ‘resident visa’... This is where there may be some ambiguity of ‘resident’.... Do they mean someone with 'Permanent Residence’ or someone on a ‘Resident Visa’ i.e. someone with a Non-Immigration visa, which is considered a resident visa ??? Its pretty much a moot point for many of us because its so easy to get a Thai Licence anyway - ultimately, if we are living here and driving here there’s no logical reason not to get a Thai Licence. In many cases - if a foreigners licence is in English and they’re from a country which is signatory to the 1968 Vienna road traffic convention they don’t need an IDP. An IDP is needed if the licence is not in English.
  14. RIP - a horrific way to go.... It does make one wonder how these things happen. Not wishing to victim blame of course, but I do cringe when seeing so many motorcyclists placing themselves directly in the line of fire, most commonly undercutting a turning lorry. I’m not saying the poor deceased lady put herself in the line of fire, but I am pointing out that many do.
  15. Airplane mode turns of the cellular part of the phone so that it does not receive or send any data via the conventional cell networks - thus you’ll not recieve any calls over a cell network and not be able to send any. You’ll not receive any conventional text message. In Airplane mode you can still use WiFi and have WiFi calling, use Line Messenger, WhatsApp Messenger for calling etc (to other Line or WhatsApp accounts) or use FaceTime (if using an iPhone)....
  16. You may need to receive your OTP when Banking or doing anything online (mBanking etc)... You can set your phone to WiFi calling - on... then while in ‘Flight mode’ you can still receive calls and SMS messages to your number over WiFi (you need to keep the Sim in the phone for this).
  17. Paying by Credit card is the most secure way IMO... I know people prefer to pay CoD but that opens us up to this scam. If we never order CoD we can’t be scammed... So.. when a CoD parcel arrives for me, my Wife knows I didn’t order it because I only ever order by credit card (through Lazada or Shopee etc). There is of course a risk of getting a fake or the wrong item paying by CC, but thats easily reversed with Lazada and shopee... I’ve sent loads of items back for being fake or not as described and never had an issue getting a refund, sometimes it takes a few weeks but the issues have always been resolved. Once we’ve paid cash to a CoD scam, thats it, no recourse so IMO its best to avoid CoD full stop unless is tesco’s delivery etc.
  18. COD scam is common... The delivery company sell your details... (data privacy is not a thing at all in Thailand). They [the scammers] know your phone number, address, name... they know you use Lazada / Shopee etc... You are told you have a delevery which you have to pay for - CoD..... Except you never ordered anything... Some people pay for the CoD delivery because, like you they order plenty of things and its difficult to keep track of if you are busy... their spouse orders stuff etc.. They open the package and.... Boom.. is only a bloomin’ sex toy !!!...
  19. When you fly into a different country... i.e. UAE, Singapore, Malaysia etc... Do you always buy a local SIM to use for internet ???? I must admit, its something I do if I’m going to spend any amount of time there (i.e. a week etc).. but not a lot of people do.
  20. How does a 77 year old with COPD get insurance in Thailand ???
  21. Should say "electrocuted to death" according to the "modern definition". ???? Can we please have a debate about precise meaning of ‘electrocuted’ because it was deleted from this thread (linked below). At least we know it wasn’t the same guy !!!...
  22. There's a certain degree of darwinism... but I agree, someone so desperate doesn’t deserve death, but he’s still a thief. I’m not so sympathetic to these thieves, desperate or not. My inlaws had a nice holiday home gutted by thieves like this when it was left unattended after the maid quit. Had some poor <deleted> had electrocuted himself while gutting that house I’d feel a sense of satisfaction and no guilt.
  23. Not all Sois in Bangkok are public???? A somewhat irrelevant point... I think we can safely assume that all the soi’s with an exception of a minute few are public roads....
  24. I'd be checking all the nearby shops and businesses to see if they had CCTV coverage.... When people behave like this, they deserve to get caught and deserve everything coming to them. -------------------- I recall years ago parking near a restaurant.... some homeless looking guy came up an asked for ‘parking money’... the girl I was with at the time refused to give him money, when we returned to her car the tyre was flat.... ... was it the guy ?... quite likely. Since then, whenever parking on the street and someone comes up and asks for parking money for them to ‘watch over the car', its usually only 20 baht etc... its not money for them to watch over the car, its money for them not to scratch it or knife the tires. I can’t believe people are not tempted to set up a ‘sting’ to catch these guys out - Especially the police who know what happens, but just don’t care. It would be a good idea to get some sort of 360 degree parking cam that we can just turn on and runs off a battery for a couple of hours... (as the normal dash cams don’t have 360 coverage).
  25. Its a good point... How many of us have a ‘power magic’ on our motorcycles / cars so that the cams record in parking mode (without draining the battery) ???
