need advice on dealing with problem neighbour
richard_smith237 replied to farangbkk123's topic in Bangkok
Good - you are in a position to make an easy decision - (you don’t own it and can move). You don’t want to move - Thats naivety.... it’s far easier and simpler to move away from this issue. IF this issue does get dealt with, who will move in next ? the juristic committee don’t care, so they don’t care who moves in an who causes issues in other rooms or other floors, it could be dogs, other rooms used as a brothel or crack-house etc... its just not worth it. Moving to a better place is the only sensible solution. You could call the police, but do you really trust them not to tell the LB that the foreigner across the hallway has ‘grassed him/her up’... and... you know it, 'no one likes a grass !!!'.... that LB will hate you and in a cracked up state potentially cause you a world of problems. This is defiantly one of those ‘walk away’ situation.... life too short, just be happy somewhere else. ------ If you walk away, will you lose deposit ? probably. Just use your deposit as your last months rent - then claim the owner didn’t fulfil their part of the contract as the property isn’t safe with a crackwhore living opposite. -
what bike part is this? is this a legit problem?

I’m not exactly sure what the issue is here.... Is the rim slightly too small for the tyre ? Or has the rim bent out so the bead of the tyre doesn’t lock in place when there is pressure in the tyre ? -
I also think its quite incredible and also quite fitting for this enigma that is Thailand !!!... Marijuana is obviously quite harmless and has medicinal benefits while at the same time causing very few social problems (no need for a debate on this). This forward thinking direction from Thailand is extremely progressive, yet at the same time extremely clumsily laid out from a legal perspective. I think ‘narco state’ is extremely harsh, its nothing like that... but giving people the freedom to smoke dope if they want is perfectly fine IMO, Thailand has placed itself ahead of the curve here.

what's on my face, and how do i remedy it?
richard_smith237 replied to BananaBandit's topic in Health and Medicine
If it is that... Give something like Zovirax cream a go... If it is some form of herpes a Dr could also prescribe some antiviral medication which can kick its backside (I’m not sure what its called). Best to see a Dr. of course. -
Do you use ‘burner phones’ so you can’t be traced ??? Wear a hat and never look up so the camera’s can’t use face ID ? Never use social media, right ? - only anonymous media like this forum? Always use a VPN ? Never use online or mobile Banking ? Never use online shopping such as Amazon, Lazada, Shopee ? Always pay for your full hotel stay in advance and use a cash-deposit (no card) ? Where is the line drawn on a neurotic ‘cash only’ ideology ??? Just use whatever is the most convenient... in some cases its cash, in others its a Credit Card, in or paying via QR code, ApplePay or ’Tap n Go’...

You could tomorrow... you don’t know that and if you did you’d likely lose the cash in it. Of course thats not justification to go ‘cashless’... the point is to show that everything comes with risk... card skimming at ATM’s is another risk with cash... I’m not anti-cash at all by the way... I’m just anti anti-cashless if that makes sense...

Unfortunately the “contagion effect” is a real thing and has spawned copycats of major and horrific murders world wide... .... Its one of the reason there is a drive by some to limit the reporting of such events so that nut-cases are not given ideas.... It's a sad testament to the society we live in, but we need to recognise there are quite a lot of unhealthy minds out there.

Definitely agree with that - the BiB often make up their own laws.... But, most of the time they know what they are doing and are trying it on to earn extra tea-money. When they know we know... they back off quickly enough... its just a game.

And... Further anecdote.... About 20 years ago I was stopped at an expressway toll booth and asked for my IDP... only had a British Licence... no idea what was going on - I ended up paying the 500 baht on the spot fine !!!... (stupid me !)... A few years later, I was stopped again, and asked for an IDP, only had a British Licence, I was told it was a 500 baht fine... I laughed... no way !!... Picked up the phone to ‘call a friend’ (as my Thai was not very good at that time)... No.. BiB waved me on... Around the same time, I was stopped, not asked for IDP, Driving licence, but I was asked for my Passport... I laughed and said no... drove off !!!.... The BiB do try it on, which is why its advisable for newbies to carry their IDP when driving and especially when riding a motorcycle..... But, the reality is MOST tourists cannot get an IDP for a motorcycle licence becasue they don’t have a motorcycle licence - but they may get away with an IDP for a car, and the BiB may accept it.... it just saves hassle.... But... If they are confident and especially if they have a Thai speaker they can call, these sort of issues disappear very quickly.

Finally someone with real experience You mean someone with an anecdotal piece of information which which backs up your argument. 20 years ago.... (I mention the duration just to highlight my ‘real experience’ as it seems you like that, or do you only like that when it backs up your view of the world ?).... ... anyway... 20 years ago I was involved in an accident in Thailand... Only a UK licence.. Police involved, they took my UK Licence (and returned it later), insurance paid out... no issues. (I was here on 6 months Multiple entry tourist visa).

Don’t you recognise the fundamentally flawed logic in the example provided ??? You are using an example of the law not being enforced to suggest that a false law is being enforced ????? hmmm.... I’m not sure you thought that one through !!!

Key words: Decent / Reliable / Size.... IF you want a decent, reliable bicycle thats the right size you are perhaps advised to get one from Bangkok.... You can of course take your chances on renting one up-country... but thats a chance and you could end up ruining your plans by waiting to get the thing fixed all the time. One Option is a reasonably priced bike from Decathlon Thailand https://www.decathlon.co.th/en/all-sports/cycling-13145?refinementList[tes_product_nature_en][0]=mountain bike Example below: 12,000 baht... Free Shipping >> you could order to be delivered to wherever you are staying in Naan.

You don't stop do you. I wasn't trying to present any comparison - or did you miss the bit about me not wanting to discuss my reasons. The reference was to show that I have used a cc extensively elsewhere but choose to use cash here. End of. Because you don’t have a Thai CC - thats why you don’t use one here... .... Agreed. End of....

Hilarious... You are questioning why means of digital payment vs cash are being discussed on a thread about using a credit cards ????? So... according to you DezLez... We are only allowed to discuss Big-C requiring a Passport for Credit Card use.... but no permitted to discuss credit card payment itself ? Thats kind of out there on the nutcase spectrum and seriously lacks the understanding and compression of what a discussion is, how they evolve and what a discussion forum is actually about... Its not as if we started discussion the pro’s of flying vs taking a motorcycle !!!....

Sometimes the person in front paying with the QR code is slower. They let the cashier ring up all their items... Then they get their phone out, then take of their mask for face recognition to open the phone, then search through their phone looking for the Bank App, then open the App, the do face recognition again, then select QR Payment, then take 5 attempts to scan because they are only lined up with half the image... then finally scan, bingo... But, that same type of person is the one who never has their wallet ready until all the times have been rung up and they are then given the amount... they dig around for cash etc... then faf about as they are receiving change.... they are slower than the efficient people with QR codes / credit cards. So... swings and roundabouts - but, an efficient person using a Credit Card or QR code is just as quick as an efficient person using cash..... And the Tap ’n Go is quicker than them all by far !!!... Each to their own.... I think I implied that there is something strange about people who try so hard to justify using cash above all else and dig up some quite irrational excuses.... .... and then there’s the cash is quicker argument used a lot by people who for some reason just don’t like digital payment when its a false claim... cash is not quicker at all when comparing like for like. You stated that you use CC’s in the UK supermarkets but not in Thailand... whatever your implication was the point was moot because you don’t have a Thai Credit Card so you are not offering a like for like comparison between credit card use in the UK and credit card use in Thailand - you don’t want to use your UK card in Thailand because it would be more expensive to do so than paying cash. A sensible choice, but not a sensible argument to present as a comparison between using CC’s in Thailand and the UK.

Wear your face mask and do your best to protect others and thats about all you can do - I don’t think anyone begrudges you going to immigration, its a necessary trip. I suspect there are 100’s of thousands of people walking around positive without knowing - the only difference is you know and will take better precautions, thats all. Online test results - you mean examples right ??? Positive ATK tests usually have two lines (same colour - both usually red)... But that depends on the test itself. I’ve not seen an ATK (Lateral flow test) which has different coloured lines - you may be getting wires crossed there. T (Test) is the first line / C (Control) is the second line. C = Negative Valid test. C & T = Positive Valid test T = Invalid test

Perhaps should have led with that info !!!

Its actually a very interesting point... Why some don’t want to use credit cards, they are scare of fraud or their purchases being somehow tracked and logged ? - do the same people carry the same fear with online purchases on Amazon or Lazada ? Why do some not want to pay with QR codes ?..... is it really slower, quicker ? I don’t think there is much difference at all, but some people clearly do... why do they think that? they see someone using QR payment, its different and the change somehow upsets them such that they develop some distorted bias ? Is cash really better ??? --------- I can go a whole month in Bangkok and only use tiny amounts of cash... For flag-fall Taxi’s and to pay the 10b or 20b to take the shortcut through the nearby moo-baan.... perhaps cash at a bar etc.. In any month perhaps 10% of my spend is cash these days... its just interesting how experiences differ... Its more interesting how some people a really fearful of digital payment. Even more interesting how they’ll justify not using it.

Discussions evolve... They always have and always do... You are free to continue discussing the point that Big-C wanted to see a Passport, but that issue has already been explained - It was simply a Proof of ID for a ‘points’ thing rather than requiring a Passport to use a Credit Card - Op didn’t explain clearly and misunderstood... The discussion of course evolved to ‘Why use a Credit Card to pay in a Supermarket, why no use Cash’ which is a very very close point to the Op itself... So... to use your words... ‘go away and read a new thread’ !!!

We had moved the discussion on to what is the best method of payment , cash or card . I was stating how progressive it is in the UK with card payments and Thailand will likely catch up within a few years Thailand already is extremely progressive.... QR payment here is extremely convenient and pretty much every point of sale apart from wet-markets and beer-bars !! Credit Card payment is everywhere and extremely convenient, although many places still want to charge 3% which is somewhat irritating (I like to use my CC and get the points). Apple Pay and Google Pay have not really evolved here - so Thailand is somewhat behind the times with that... but when it does, it will be extremely convent to just ’swipe’ your phone or watch over an NFC Payment machine, click yes and there you have it.. paid... Cash is king ?????..... No... Cash is out-dated. And for the ’tin-foil-hatters’ who worry about being tracked - At some point soon we may be able to pay in crypto via NFC and no one can trace it.
-
No - but I am not sure that even if I had that I would use it. My personal choice and the reasons are not relevant to this thread in case anybody was going to ask. Fair enough - but you made it relevant when you stated that you pay with credit cards all the time in the UK but don’t in Thailand... The reality is you don’t have a Thai Credit card making your statement moot because your comparison is not presented on a even playing field...

You could get those ‘thumbs working’.... -
You have concerns over theft and fraud, but never about loosing your wallet ? I think perhaps you are being selective in your pro’s and con’s. IF my wallet is stolen or I loose it - I loose the cash. What about ’skimming at an ATM’ - never worried about that ? I am protected from any fraudulent activity on my cards. QR payment is as secure as the user - i.e. I could thumb in the wrong amount by mistake, although usually the amount is automatic from the QR receipt. Tap n go also presents a risk of theft which is why we should place our cards in an RIFD / NFC blocking wallet (which many are these days).
