Possible reason - so he can see up the road a little better. These junctions are a nightmare for edging out and you’re looking right into oncoming traffic and a motorcycle is riding the wrong way down the shoulder.... So.. he could be doing it simply for better visibility / safety at the junction to his area. Or, he just wants to give back.

So it upsets / irritates you that foreigners throw in a Thai word with their English sentence ??? Does it upset you when Thai’s are talking Thai but then thrown in an English word, or is it only foreigners who you think may consider themselves integrating into Thai society who you have some sort of aversion towards ? ‘Yellow Tabien Baan’ has become used as thats what it is... its like when talking about compulsory car insurance people use Por-Ror-Bor, or marriage documents Kor-Ror 2 and Kor-Ror 3 etc... it removes ambiguity of what the specific document is.

No... I’ve been rejected when trying to use a Driving Licence for a flight. Pink ID was fine (not a big issue anyway as I always travel with my passport - wallet is just easier to access). & Pink ID does get the Thai price more than the Thai DL (one example - entering Koh Samet - but who cares about 200 baht vs 40 baht - its not a big deal beyond principle). No they don’t - that is simply YOUR projection of how you THINK others feel... perhaps thats how you would feel in similar circumstances. Stupid analogy - its nothing like that whatsoever. Different experiences - I’ve found the pink ID handy but not essential. Particularly when out and about and not wanting to carry my passport everywhere. Agreed... useful, not essential. I think it was the Yellow Book I used to open my account... the Pink ID is used eery time I return to the Bank and need to do something inside (I don't carry my passport - Pink ID is very useful for this, they don’t accept a DL (not at BKK Bank in Bangkok or SCB in Bangkok)).

They’re in a racket together with the financing company. They make more money on the finance so are trying to force people into that. Either go further afield if you really want Filano... or look at another brand. My last 3 motorcycles all bought ‘cash'... a quick simple transaction on mobile banking.

Why keep the country secret ??? Sounds like extremely unfair treatment, and as you mention Thailand really is strict about people working here (i.e. helping out at their girlfriends bar etc)... ... but really, much of the paranoia is just the myth of barstool experts..... this guy is at no risk... he’s just cutting grass.

Love it when the ‘wannabe lawyers’ pipe up.... I’m waiting for the good old favourite.... ‘you can’t even paint your own house as you are taking the job away from a Thai’ !!!...

I agree.... of course that ‘pathway’ is entirely in the hands of those refusing to such tests. IF you have nothing to hide there is no reason not to take a test. - after that comment there will naturally be discussions of the accuracy of such tests - thus, a positive field breathalyser test should be backed up with calibrated test at a hospital or the police station. - And this ‘fleeing’ of the scene needs to stop !!... the charge for fleeing a scene (without mitigating circumstances - i.e. escaping a mob or needing medical care) should be higher than DUI. - Additionally, IF someone flee’s a scene and does not attend hospital, the time limit for reporting themselves should be less than 1 hour... not going home for 24 hours to sober up ! Good point... I wonder if the driving licence already includes something such as this.

It seems there are plenty of unscrupulous sellers on Lazada and Shopee who’s sole aim is to pull one over on the customer.... With all the quarantining I was doing over the last couple of years I was sick of using a plastic knife and fork... so I wanted a ‘neat travel set’ (fork, knife, spoon in a holder)... Lazada has just that, plenty of them... I chose one, the miniature set that arrived was suitable for the hands of a 4 year old !! The Lazada posting was deliberately misleading.... I now call this ‘pseudo bait & switch’ the ‘mini-chair-scam’ after this.... Where sellers advertise a ‘chair’ it looks good, price is decent... chair arrives and its a 'dolls-chair’... no where in the add was there any presentation of scale or indication that it was a miniature chair. There are lots of genuine shops these websites, but sadly there are so very many scam artists too... It’s a PITA filtering out the wheat from the chaff...

Probably right, but I opened my two SCB accounts with just my passport and my Thai driving Licence, in SCB, BIG C Pattaya South if anyone is interested. I think thats good info... There should be a ‘Pinned Topic’ highlighting where people have successfully opened a Bank Account without a work permit (or Yellow house book).... - Listing Area / Bank / Brach / Year.... as the question about opening accounts gets asked a lot. Personally - I always hit a Brick wall trying to open an account without a WP until I got my Yellow Book. I opened my first account in Bangkok two decades ago with a Work Permit and have had the same account since. About 10 years ago tried to open a second account at the same Bank and they wouldn’t without a Work Permit - ridiculous as I was already holding an account !!! I was only able to open a second account once I had the Yellow Book (that was multiple branches of SCB in Bangkok).

Pretty much. Why go through the hassle of getting it when you can just go to immigration every 5 years, and actually, you could do it the same time as your extension or 90 day reporting. If you are working, you can show your Work Permit, if you are not working, you have all the time in the world. And if you don’t work in Thailand and travel frequently so you have not done any 90 day reports ? (Chaeng Wattana will not issue a CoR without a 90 day report receipt). I’ve been in Thailand for 25 years - in that time I’ve only ever needed to do 2x 90 day reports. The Yellow Book saves me about 4000 baht each time I’ve renewed my Driving and Motorcycle licence (avoid expensive embassy charges for Affirmation of Residence letter).
-
both covered by a Thai driving license Not really.... If people travel too regularly and do not do 90 days reports, they can’t get a letter of address from immigration*, they are forced to get an Affirmation of Residence from their Embassy (Brit Embassy is about 2000 baht per-pop and DLT want one each for Car and Motorcycle licence !). [*Note: according to comments I think Immigration in Chiang Mai is one of the few Immigration offices which do issue CoR’s without a 90 day report - certainly not in BKK] Also - In ‘most’ cases a Bank account cannot be opened with a Driving Licence - many people have encountered this issue. [*Note: there are reports of people who have successfully opened an account with a thai Driving licence, but not many banks accept this at all - doing so requires a lot of leg work a lot of refusals and going from bank to bank and finding one who will accept the DL].

... ‘accept the realities’... I agree, but that doesn’t mean accepting everything an official tells us because I’ve noticed in Thailand that ‘officials’ are quite often incorrect and can be questioned, we just have to do so in manner which works (i.e. not complaining or getting emotional, but being professional, respectful and firm). This whole idea some foreigners have that because someone has a uniform they are right is ridiculous... officials are human, they are just like us. Some foreigners wouldn’t say ‘boo’ to a policeman, yet the Police we may more regularly interact with are quite low down on the 'socio-economic' scale... they have no idea of our status though, connections etc... when acting confidently, politely and firmly their attitude often quickly changes. This is the same in many government offices, behave professionally, confidently, politely and firmly and we are treated extremely well - this means we can question things when we go about it the right way.

I agree, any refusal to take an Alchohol test (breathalyser or give a blood sample at hospital) ‘should’ be automatically treated as DUI without any flexibility or wiggle room. Unfortunately, the refusal of such tests offers those with decent lawyers plausible deniability and sufficient wiggle room. IF the driver is suspected of driving while drunk, he is therefore suspected of a crime - he should be held down and a blood sample forcibly taken, consent or not. The Police are weak - this is the issue. All this news achieves is that people can continue to drink and drive and refuse alcohol tests. The inaction of the Police at the hospital have simply enabled further drink driving.

Interesting story, its good to see that things went your way. I’m curious, how can you not register the car in your name now ? I’m sure you’ve looked into it already and your situation seems far more complex, but we can register our own cars ourselves at the DLT (in BKK thats Chatchak DLT which deal with registration).

Either done long ago or in error at an office that didn't know the rules. Not so long ago my local office denied any knowledge of the yellow book. I would very much doubt anyone would get into the blue book now. I think this pretty much explains the varying results we get throughout the nation when dealing with different government offices and agencies.... The rules seem to be interpreted individually, some don’t know the rules, or some have followed the rules passed down from their seniors which are not quite right. Ultimately - getting added to a ‘Blue House Book’ may be as simple as an officer not knowing the rules at all, nothing more than that - in a quiet upcountry Amphur with few foreigners that seems a likely explanation. As for the DLT’s where a few (Chonburi / Khon Kaen?) don't accept the Yellow Book as Proof of Address - why is that when others do ??.... Legacy misinterpretation ? Someone didnt quite get the rules right but they had influence so it stuck and was passed down. Theoretically, the Yellow Tabien Baan is the ultimate proof of address in Thailand. Thus, if I went to a DLT and they didn’t accept the Yellow Book I think I’d push it, ask for seniors - politely shake the tree, pull some strings and see where the fruit falls - I would at least like it explained to me clearly why the DLT does not accept something such as the Yellow Tabien Baan as a proof of address when most others do.
