15-year-old motorcyclist collides with dog and dies
richard_smith237 replied to snoop1130's topic in Pattaya News
So the 15 year old driving the bike is wrong in now way, shape or form? It could easily have been a 40 year old, fully licensed, fully legal.... It could have been a parent with a child on their motorcycles. The motorcyclist is complicit in his own demise as a result of his choice not to wear a helmet. However, the stray dog running out is the cause of the accident - stray dogs are the problem. -

Ignoring the fact that you responded out of context, within the context of your response you are presenting a 'casual fallacy’ and have incorrectly concluded that a cause is related to an effect... ... in this case it is not, the legality of the motorcyclist has little do with a dog running out and getting hit by a passing motorcyclist.... ... had the motorcyclist been legal, the result would still have been and accident caused by a dog running out, motorcyclists are knocked off by dogs all the time... its an issue and whether or not a motorcyclist has a licence is of little relevance. The only valid relevance in your comment is that of helmet wearing, in that the severity of injuries would be reduced had a helmet been worn. -

But he's driving a bike illegally But he's not wearing a helmet But he does not have a license But but but..... Learn to read the quote to which the response is made... that should stop you from responding out of context. In this case ‘he’s not wrong’... backing up the comment made by proton that ‘soi dogs are all pests, spayed or not’... Such a sad man you are But he’s not wrong... -
re Cashiers Cheque

I’ve just checked my Mobile Banking App (SCB and BKK Bank) and discovered I was wrong with my limits earlier in the thread: Limits are: Trx to other SCB account: 5,000,000 baht Trx to other Bank account: 2,000,000 baht Prompt Pay: 2,000,000 baht. Trx to other BKK account: 2,000,000 baht Trx to other Bank account: 2,000,000 baht Prompt Pay: 2,000,000 baht. So... As the Op wants to Trx 2,000,000 baht - mBanking is the way to go IF he has his mBanking App operational. -

Yup... I’ve encountered it a couple of times selling cars... Buyer turned up with 2.95MB in cash... had to drive to the Bank with him and pay it in.... Another time we went to the buyers Bank and he asked to transfer to my account but we were told it wouldn’t be instant, so he withdrew the 2.85MB took time to count, then went to my Bank, paid it in and of course it took time to count again. Whenever I’ve bought expensive items (i.e. cars) I’ve used a cashiers cheque. On other occasions when people have bought my car they’ve paid by cashiers cheque to me and I’ve called up the Bank to verify the cashiers check. Conversely, while stuck in the UK (covid) for 6 months, I bought a car (instead of hiring one), and sold it once Thailand re-opened and I was returning.... The online transfer was free and took 10mins to show up in my account (from a different Bank in the UK to my Bank in the UK). Why Thailand charges 1500 baht ???.... because it can (and because of greed). -
I must be missing something here.... this is just a stupidly retarded comment.... Locals keying a foreigners car because he’s cutting the grass ? Throwing rubbish bags in a foreigners garden because he’s cutting the grass ? ... thats a portion of seriously distorted sideways thinking with a side of ‘chip on the shoulder’.... ????

That sounds about par for the course for banking in Thailand. In some aspects its so advanced, mBanking with QR codes, prompt pay etc etc... Then actually go ‘into’ a bank and we step back decades into pathetic rules, bureaucracy and being ‘anchored’ to our Bank-Book !!!.... Charging 1500 baht for a transfer is outrageous... the issue for me is that if ‘forces’ (ok encourages) the customer to walk out of the Bank with 2 million Baht cash, go down the road to another Bank and pay that cash in.... there’s an elevated risk of theft. Its fortunate the criminals in Thailand are so feckless.... All they’d need to do is to camp out around the Banks and rob people walking out of there with a bag !!!... -
These are ridiculous responses dripping in sanctimony.... What would you suggest ? - Leaving our children at School because the road may flood ? - Not sending them to school in the first place because the road may flood 6 hours later ? - Moving house to a different area which there is a guarantee will never flood ? (good luck). - Staying out and not going home because the road to the moo-baan or condo is 1ft deep ? There are so many many situation where we are out and need to get home etc and 30cm flood water is no issue.... I’ve been in that situation a few times and glad I have an SUV. This idea that you can plan for all eventualities is fundamentally flawed... it's the logic of someone who has the luxury of no needing to be somewhere or needing to do things.

Hopefully you've got an address. A Google maps link ???? would be great. It's not until November. We'll be passing through, staying the night before moving on to Bangkok. Excellent ‘community’ spirit being prepared to help another forum member out. We ‘should’ be prepared to help each other more in similar situations. I wonder if there are any forum members already in KK who can take a ride by / drive by the address and take a couple of photos.

I've used cashiers cheques when purchasing a car - if I’m not mistaken they had the name of the business on them (account name). The easiest way is simply a Bank Transfer - but it may not be instant as cash is. So, if you want an ‘instant response’ cash is the way. IF you don’t mind waiting for the Banks to ‘clear’ the transaction which may take a day, then the Bank Transaction would work. You could also do an online transaction but you may have to adjust your online Banking maximum transaction limits. It’s likely you’d need to contact the Bank to approve this limit as the the limits you can set yourself don’t usually go higher than 500k trx within same bank and 300k to different banks (within Thailand) - mileage may vary here. This sounds very dodgy. Its not uncommon for Bank Staff to try and sell insurance with an account. Some push the sales so hard they’ll tell you that you cannot open an account without insurance. As far as I know, there is no insurance requirement for any account or joint account. You did the right thing - if a bank is peddling insurance, go to another Bank. Or, perhaps even complain to the manager. These sorts of *scams have been going on for too long (*Not really scams the insurance is legit, but the Bank Staff gets commission for selling the insurance - they’re ripping you off). -
Sending expensive watch back to the UK (and back again)
richard_smith237 replied to Batty's topic in General Topics
Absolutely agree... the Op has some perceived notion that his watch will receive a bette service in the UK than Thailand - he’s basing this notion on one experience and clearly some bias. Hi-end watches are very popular in Thailand, there are many reputable dealers and service centres. The obvious, simple and logical solution is of course to have the watch serviced in Thailand. The potential for issues, losses etc when shipping a high value item is too high as are the additional costs of insuring it etc. Just get it serviced here, seek recommendations if you must Op - but how do you know a service centre in the UK will do a better job? you don’t you are basing all of this decision of a ‘feeling’ which is somewhat daft. -

Of course... Speed is a major issue and I agree... cars and motorcyclist often travel the residential streets at unsafe speeds. But so are soi dogs running out in the streets and that shouldn’t happen - the strays shouldn’t be there, they are a pest. If its someones pet dog, the owner is responsible. If its a child running out into the street, the parent (primary caregiver) is responsible for not supervision their child properly. -
15-year-old motorcyclist collides with dog and dies
richard_smith237 replied to snoop1130's topic in Pattaya News
WRONG... they are strays... Just because someone feels sorry for them and puts food out for them does not make them a house pet. A dog with a collar, which has an owner who is 100% responsible for that dog's behaviour and actions is not a stray. A dog walking freely around the town and city streets, on the beaches etc with others in packs are ’strays’... they only return to a certain area because they know someone will put out food - they then become territorial of that area. ---------- BUT... IF You are saying they aren’t strays... WHO is responsible for said dog when it bites someone or causes a motorcycle accident ????? - Of course, no one... because no one will own up to owning the dog... they’ll argue they just put some scraps of food out because they feel sorry for it.... They’re strays ! -

richard_smith237 replied to snoop1130's topic in Pattaya News
Here we go again. Must have been the dog's fault, of course. Of course, it wasn’t the dogs fault - your comment is ridiculous ‘causal fallacy’... but you know that already. It is the fault of the authorities for not doing anything about stray dogs. It also the fault of those who provide a food source and encourage more dogs and vermin into the area, they’ll procreate increasing the numbers of future generations...... as mentioned, none of this is the fault of the dogs. It is the fault of myopic idiots who think they are animal lovers but fail to recognise bigger picture consequences of the actions they mistakenly believe are caring. -

Such a sad man you are But he’s not wrong... Wait until a stray dog / soi dog darts out infront of your motorcycle or that of someone you care about causing you/them injury or worse.... There should be no stray dogs roaming the streets - thats a no-brainer for anyone with a brain. Stray / soi dogs are a problem.... As, of course, are underage kids on motorcycles without helmets. -

Not wearing a helmet & stray dogs.... two issues which both place Thailand firmly in the ‘developing World' status... and of course, one more... No one in a position of influence or decision making power cares about any of this stuff...- 96 replies

As if there were going to be any other ruling.... I’m surprised he didn’t claim that as as his accession to power was through non-violent or forceful military means the constitution is not relevant as his premiership did not commence until the results of the first ballot, which by an incredible twist of fate he won with a landslide... hmmmm.....

Yep, both Lad Prao and Bang Na have fewer foreigners if thats what you mean. Pretty much anywhere away from the main central Sukhumvit area’s and the population density of foreigners is less. But.. What is ‘Thai Way of Life’ ???... we have Westerners on this forum who claim Bangkok is not real Thailand etc...
-
Not quite the same... Parking on Thai streets vs church bells ringing in the UK... a bit of a stretch. Not that I’m defending those who ‘defend the space in front of their property’... however, the families have probably owned their house since we before car became so ubiquitous in Thailand... not the streets are jammed in towns never designed for so much traffic... I can understand why they would wish to ‘reserve’ the area in front of their house for their own parking. As far as those restaurants etc who reserve the parking for customers.. thats a different matter and their behaviour is as discussed entitled ayhole behaviour, but again, I understand why a business would ‘want’ to do that, but agree, the law needs to step in... Of course, the law will never step in with any of these cases / examples because it never does in Thailand until there is an incident. Cue the next news story: Farang gets beaten up for parking outside a restaurant.... Farang parks, up, restaurant owner comes out tells him he can’t park there, Farang tells him he can, its the law and he’s within his rights... argument ensues, 5 staff come out and kick the s#it out of the Farang driver.... News reports that its against the law to ‘reserve spaces on the street’.... restaurant owner gives the Farang a wai of apology and pays 500 baht fine to the police !!... Asean-now forum is rife with comments that the foreigner would have been awarded 200,000 baht compensation if he was indecently groped on Walking Street !!!!...

I did it once to annoy the idiot that put them there. According to you I am now condemed for the rest of my life. You need to relax a bit. Instead of simply moving them aside, you drove over cones to make a point to the ‘idiot that who put them there’... ... and you are suggesting I relax a bit ????
-
If you are seriously struggling with this issued and believe your only option is to ‘drive over the cones’ I’d question what you are doing behind the wheel of a car in the first place !!!... Of course, no one is that stupid... so its obvious you simply reacted in escalation rather than simply moving the cones - driving over the cones is rather a ????end move...

No looking at new cars unless you are buying one
richard_smith237 replied to howerde's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
Exactly this... You are already a customer and potentially a future customer.... or rather, potentially ‘were’ a future customer. It amazes me in Thailand how they manage to 'snatch defeat from the jaws of victory’ to outrageously clumsy customer service. In this case, ultimately this is one seriously arrogant, entitled, up-themselves sales department to even allow this type of thought to cross their mind. The only time this would be acceptable is if the Op were filthy and covered in oil and muck, which I very much doubt. As ezzra wrote - I’d have demanded to see the manager to see his take on things. ---------- The reality is, as a car owner we are always a potential car buyer. When I take my car in to the dealership for service, my Son and I often take a look in the show-room, we sit in the cars, discuss them, look at the trim, the boot-space, the comfort etc... Friends have Purchased Mazda CX30 and a CX-8 after I’d recommended them. Obviously they didn’t purchase those cases ‘because’ I’d recommended them, but having looked at the cars recently I’d suggested to friend that they take a look.... Had I received a negative experience in the showroom I’d instead have been telling my friends to ‘avoid Mazda’. Thailand has yet to mature with regards to customer service - In many cases they are simply unaware of the ‘unmeasurable’ loss of sales due to their poor performance / behaviour, the same can be said of post sales service. In recent years Honda and Ford have lost my business due to poor a show-room experience. One customer doesn’t matter, but I imagine I’m not the only one. -
I remember being in MaeSot years ago... they had the same thing... cones and stools outside on the road to block people from parking. I needed to park... I pulled up and asked a ‘grumpy looking old lady if I could park there for 20 mins.. she smile, moved a cone and stool and I parked’.... surprised the s#it out of me.... I guess the issue is for some shophouses etc its the only parking they have for their car etc. Still annoying, but they have to be able to park somewhere themselves too.
