  1. You want to fly on the Friday night before Christmas without a reservation? Good luck, because you'll need it! I realize Thailand is not a Christian nation, but still lot's and lot's of tourists are arriving that time for a break between Christmas and New Years. My guess is that all flights will be fully booked long before you get there. Absolutely I'd make a reservation and well in advance at that if I was flying at that time. For that matter, any Friday night I'd make a reservation as many Thais like to get away for the weekend and often the flights are fully booked even on just an average weekend.

    thanks for the advice

i have just booked a flight from england online.

i arrive around 7pm so have booked the thai airways flight at 22.30pm to c mai

thought best to book the last flight incase delayed getting to bk by a few hours.

thanks again, didnt want to risk just turning up and all the flghts gone!

  2. Hi guys,i arrive around 6 30 pm on 22nd dec.from england via dubai

basically i am wanting a flight straight to chiang mai that evening 8pm onwards

whats the situation regarding domestic departures? is it similar to don muang, where as you can just purchase a ticket on one of the floors from one of airline counters(air asia, one to go etc)

are the ticket offices still close to the domestic check ins ?

btw i am also looking forward to not having the long walk that was at don muang :o

    thanks in advance

Prior book the flight if you can with the flood situation in the country many ofthe buses are not running, the flights are likely to be busy :D

yes i heard about the flooding.but im not going for another 2 months.so should be fine then surely?

  3. well househunter i am 27,so similar age to you - i would suggest staying away from places like spicy and bubble if you are a bit of an introvert.many ok clubs and bars around, try warm up,hot shots, rooftop bar,cm saloon,un irish etc so many non bar girl places.

btw you wont even have to chat up girls, they will approach you in most cases(ie you are 30 years old,i presume you are british or australian perhaps.if you are 18-35 and english in c mai and look and dress good, you will get tonnes of attention and free sex(if wanted) no problem.buying drinks for them will be the only cost.

    good luck

So you just head to a bar/club and drink on your own ... then after a while some girl will just come over and chat?

absolutely so - i always go out with friends who come with me from england, but many english farang i know have no quarms about going out on their own.as chiang mai is the friendliest place i have seen so far,and for male and female farang, extremely easy to hook up with the opposite sex.

if you dont want to drink on your own, many decent farang around to drink with

  5. Just wondering what people get up to here in cmx?

I hear from the pharangs I meet that going to a bar and picking up random thai chick is about the standard form of entertainment here other than finding good food. They are 35-50 y.o guys who tell me all the stories of thai chicks they meet and how they are all interested in getting money from pharangs, and the way they get around or use this to their benefit and the whole thing seems quite depressing really. So heading to a bar/club doesn't sound too good on that side.

Though I did head out last weekend to a nice bar with a thai friend of someone I met over seas, which was nice. I met a couple of nice pharangs there, but the idea of just going into a bar/club on my own doesn't really sit well. I'm not the extrovert who goes up and starts chatting to random people and sitting alone is pretty depressing.

So wondering if anyone else has been in that situation when they first hit cmx?

It would appear to me that the foreigners you have met are fairly narrow minded. The novelty of 'picking up a random thai chick' will wear off eventually (hopefully). Perhaps they haven't had much luck with ladies in the country they come from and now with a little bit of money they can live out their "dreams".

couldnt agree more blinky.you see many farang going over to thailand and totally disrespecting thai bar girls.acting like they own the place, when in truth its the only bit of action they will probably see,as these creatures are prob "not so lucky" back home.

nothing to brag about having to pay for sex and picking up random girls.

  6. > i like lucky bar!. too bad it closed down and doubt the old workers are

    > going to be there when it re-opens.

All the old staff were having a birthday party for the owner last Friday at 'Can Do', the 'Experitainment' Empower bar. So chances are the old cast will return.

    ---

SaowJiangMai, thanks for that statement!! ( Still... if you mention something in an enummeration of other bad qualities then it has to be assumed that they're all bad right... : "noxious cocktail or beer, awash with ladyboys, clumsy tourists exhibiting rave acumen, free lance pros hiding in dark corners " ) But anyway thanks for clearing that up. ...and indeed freelance pros could be assumed to be a good thing also, especially in dark corners... :D

Are you working on a razor sharp expose on the current mood in CHianG Mai after the coup? I hope so. :o

    Cheers,

    Chanchao

It was a great party as well, even got to grafitti the toilet walls (its allowed)

the old staff will be at the new Lucky Bar, so its a non issue.

any ideas yet on what the closing time will be on the new lucky bar/club.

hope it not just another spicy.any new name been mentioned yet and opening date?

  7. Shangri-La Hotel and Spa - end-2007

    Mariott Hotel - mid/end-2007

So I guess Changklan Road is gonna become a 'rich' farang district huh? Prices will go up, because the rich farangs will be paying for many expensive beers, food and clothes.

    Changklan road is already expensive...

    compared to what??

    could you be more specific?

Most of the independent farang restaurants in the night bazaar are normally something like 40% more expensive than the same quality in other areas (German restaurants, Red Lion, Indian places, etc.).

That qualifies as expensive in my book. :D

i agree, some restaurants/hotels do seem more expensive in this area.i sometimes eat at the red lion, solely for decent english food.cant comment on the german ones.

maybe you do pay more for the location is some respects.

in my opinion though, this is arguably the best area to stay for a tourist, due to close proximaty of everything you could need.also situated away from the many budget backpackers :o

only a short walk at night to the bars/clubs(loh kroh, kotchasarn, moonmuang etc.also very close to horizon, hotshots, the peak etc and of course a minute away from maccie d's and pizza hut lol

for me it is worth paying slightly more to stay in this area as opposed to places like in the top north hotel area.

  8. i would keep well clear of the royal lanna booked in there in august for 7 nights and you had to pay 1000 baht every day they would not allow you to even pay in advance CRAZY :o CHECKED OUT AFTER 1 NIGHT DISGUSTED

    thanks for the reply -

what were the rooms like, did you stay in one of the best rooms(junior suite) or basic.

yes 1000 a night, but 12,000 for the month sounds good if the best rooms are good.

yeh that sounds strange paying every day!

heard alot of bad reviews from this hotel, but maybe these were the basic rooms

wonder if they have a walk in rate for 12,000,or maybe its online only

    cheers

Why not click on the link in the "pinned" section. Hotels. They are all there (well a lot of them are)

yes,i am quite aware of the hotels section, and looked before i made my post!

if you read my post properly - i have listed some hotels/condo i would like members to give advice on,the whole point of a forum,to help each other.

the said hotel sites do not really give great user reviews, hence why i have started a thread as many members here are clued up regarding recommending good hotels and condos and i have had great help in the past.

    thanks

  10. Hi guys,

    i am in c mai 22 dec - 20 jan

i just tried to book suriwongse hotel with chiangmaionlinehoteldiscounter,as iv used that site everytime.tried to get a superior room again(1150 per night) but told fully booked.dissapointed as i got in last xmas.

i really like the location(loh kroh/night bazzar/bars/fast food lol etc)

could anyone please help me find a good alternative hotel or condo, around this location.

with me staying 4 weeks maybe better to get a good condo as would of been spending over 30,000 at the suriwongse anyway!

could anyone advise on these options iv found for quality of room and price.

1.royal lanna hotel - next to red lion pub (heard the basic rooms are bad,but they do a monthly rate)

    studio is 9000 a month(bad rooms i take it)

junior suite 12000 a month(how are these rooms?)

    2.duangtawan(price ok - but 1675 per night from 24 dec - 04 jan) a bit too much!

    3.chiang mai plaza - 1100 per night

    4.pornping - 1150 (tower wing/not the front wing)

5.raming lodge bottom of loh kroh road - 100 per night (expect it will be rather noisy 24/7)

6.good condo - up to 20,000 ish for the month

if anyone can recommend me any of these,or any i dont know of it will be much appreciated.

would maybe like a really nice condo within 5 mins of suriwongse location.royal lanna sounds good but how are their top rate junior suite rooms?

thanks in advance for your time

  11. And what are you really looking for ? Queen Vic "boring" and why exactly is that. It doesn't attemmt to sell itself as some "go-go joint with semi naked naked young ladies swing from poles (does it ?)

It's boring cause it is boring. :o

thanks chuchok, glad im not the only one.

maybe its because im only 27 years old that it doesnt appeal to me.

it seems to be frequented by mainly over 40's out for a relaxed quiet drink.

i imagine its popular with expat brits,as its the closest iv seen to english pub in cm

  12. http://www.chiangmainews.com/ecmn/viewfa.php?id=1535

nice review from the guys at cm news.

good to see others share the same view as me of bubble and spicy.

btw is mandalay aka sharkeys,if it is,its also well down the list of top places.imo

im back in december for a month or so with friends, and want to check out more of these places.

how do you guys rate fashion house, bang rak, monkey club as iv not been.

my top places in cm iv been to are.

    warm-up

    volume 1

    horizon club

rooftop bar to start(how does rasta bar compare?)

a few bars on the peak

    cm saloon

    johns place

lucky ok with a decent crowd

hot shots ok for a one off

    worst places

    bubble

    spicy

    foxy lady

    queen vic(boring)

Many of wot you mention are just plain old simple bars and could in no way be described as "clubs" (John's Place for example)

of course i know johns place isnt a club!!!

the thread states best clubs,so i posted a link to a review of the best and worst of c mai's clubs.

i merely stated what places i like in cm,and included a few bars also.quite simple

  13. I was pleasently surprised when I went to Bubbles after the re-vamp, definitely worth a night out there. Went there this weekend, and there did seem quite a lot of Thais there, aswell as the usual tourist farangs, dancing like they've drank some Sangsom for the 1st time, lol!! Looks quite modern now.

Not sure whats happening with Lucky/Charming Bar.

Also there will be a new night-club opening - Sawasdee, which is located underneath Chiang Mai Grand View Hotel, this is located on Super High Way Road. I think this will be open next month.

My fav clubs in CM are Warm Up (i wonder why!), Discovery, Fashion House, ID4, Monkey Club.

Has anyone been to that Hua Him club next to Mandalay? Any good or not?

thanks rob, will check sawasdee when i return in november.havnt been to discovery or id4.can you tell me the locations please.do any play decent house.

i know this is a long shot, but are there any bars/clubs in cm that play old skool house, from back in the day, post acid house/hacienda.the early to late'ish 90's was a great time.then came trance, now its gone downhill.thank god for nights like hed kandi.

decent music in the house part in warm up,but its so tiny

  14. bar mayflower on loh kroh road is an excellent retaurant, owned by a french guy.its in the middle of a newish bar, called red bar i think, and stairway to heaven.

serves beautiful roast duck, mash and nice topped sauces.many dishes on the menu, large menus outside the bar.not too cheap but very good food,i eat there alot when in c mai

  15. so whats happening with lucky bar and charmin.i hear they are making the 2 bars into a club of some sort.i take it ja(owner of charmin) and her french husband must of sold up to lucky bar owners.

anyone any info on opening date, type of club etc.

not surprised lucky bought it,as they are one of the busiest spots on kotchasarn late night, and charmin was the total opposite.hope its a good late night alternate to the meatmarket that is 'spicy'

  16. so guys, what is the 'new' bubble like.

has it had a major facelift? how about the music as it was appallingly out of date, the djs were a good 5 years behind the times

The 'new Bubble' is great. They have totally revamped the place and it looks fab. All the old plasticky moon rock decor they use to have on the walls have gone so have the 80s mirrored walls, theres a new dj box and swanky new plasma tv and lighting system. Totally different layout apart from the toilets and bars, they still in the same place. It has a good modern look to it now.

as for being "5 years out of date", I cant agree with you there. Most of the music played on the night we went, sounded like it was on the Ministry of Sound annual 2006 CD.

If you really want to know check it out for yourself.

wow,i will check it out when we come in november.mos 2006! the music must also have changed a hel_l of a lot since it closed:).maybe they took some advice that playing a blur song 2 poor dance remix for 3 years in a row every night is not the way,and cheesy eric prydz call on me!it was ok a few years ago in bubble, decent house and trance, but the last year or so was the same techno tunes every night after 12pm.maybe they will play decent house and hed kandi styles in a year of so.maybe they making an effort to catch on to the bangkok club scene.

i think the problem bubble had was trying to appeal to the audience of mostly european males, excluding british.who would dance to the sound of a fire alarm if it was loud enough lol.i once saw it,im sure they were german! thus playing cack out of date tracks.at the end of the day bubble is (was) like spicy's younger brother, not quite as seedy, but most go for one thing, and its also full of over 50's.

then again its not my place to judge, each to their own.but i hope it has improved as the aim of the facelift was to re open with a better class of people, just as horizon club has done.farang may even get turned away.apparantly if drunk and rude.although that seems to only happen to the israelis and germans in my experience, who usually come up against a angry thai girls thai bf!

anyway thanks for the review, will check out the new style.

  17. Queen Vic would indeed be boring as an entertainment venue, but for lunch or dinner I have to say it's getting pretty awesome, and awesome value too. I keep getting more impressed on each visit and making it more of an actual dinner stop rather than just a quick snack. If you haven't been, give it a try.

Anyway, back to the clubs; yeah, obviously Spicy/Sharkey/Mandalay would be in quite a different league as the mainstream Thai clubs.. Doubt they even belong under the same topic.

That said, I don't really care for dark freezing cold halls with wall to wall tables with drunk teenage kids. So.

    On Bubble:

    > "In a nut shell: 100 baht entrance (can often scam your way in if it's late) buys you

    > noxious cocktail or beer, awash with ladyboys, clumsy tourists exhibiting rave acumen,

    > free lance pros hiding in dark corners and .."

That's a rather sad description, I mean sad on the part of a magazine. Apparently ladyboys reflect badly on a place? CM News would rather have them stay at home or ply the streets and not interfere with their high class clubbing?? Is this a call for sexist discrimination at the door? Like some clubs "No Ladyboys Allowed"? Can't believe they didn't take some more care in the way they phrased this. Is this 1950's mid-west suburbia?

They continue to say that it's still one of the VERY FEW places with a dance floor.. Well hellooo.. They just don't get it, do they? (as in Western / tourist preference)

    Cheers,

Chanchao [There, that should get this conversation on its way. :o ]

so what is the situation regarding ladyboys in some venues(term used loosely)

i know there is a sign in the entrance of spicy saying no ladyboys.

i once saw one try to get in,and the doorman ushered her/it/he to one side and shone a torch in its face, and then thrown out

    why are they banned anyway?

complaints maybe from angry many farang who inadvertantly took one home whilst out of their face drunk, not being able to tell the diffrence ,and so embarrassed felt the need to protest against them.cant think of any other reason,as iv never seen them violent or causing bother

  18. Hi there,

cheers for all the input, it's appreciated.

We'll start off in the UN, but won't be there too long as it is pretty stale. But a good location and the stag plays footy for the Faranguatans, so should get some free beer!

Sounds like STH bar has improved since my last outing, and the upstairs pool table (was a tacky go-go dance stage last time I was there) could be perfect. The stag likes pool and some sort of 'killer' comp always goes down well... and I can imagine a fair few phillies could be persuaded upstairs to help re-spot the balls.

Thanks for the advice regarding the Starlight go-go place. Will scrap that. The Horizon sounds ok though - can anyone peae confirm location?

(I've always enjoyed Bubble when I've been out, but will say no more before I tarnish myself too badly)

The idea is to keep the 'stag train' within walking distance (hence I won't be going to 'Warm Up' for example, but thanks) and so people can feel free to join/leave the party whenever they want without too much grief (a few resident CM folk will be in tow and will have to retire early as they're at work the next day).

As for any TV punters wanting to come along and join in the festivities, I can't see any reason why not - the more the merrier!

    Cheers

    Jimbo

yes the location for horizon,is underneath the duangtawan hotel, top of loh kroh road

    enjoy

  20. A 'free for all' discussion for a worthy cause:

A good friend is marrying in Chiang Mai and the duty has fallen to me to organize his stag doo (do?), it will be on a Wednesday in October.

Can you guys (and gals for that matter) let me know what you think of the plan and make any comments / recommendations of your own (feel free to throw in tips on how to make it a more memorable occasion...)

    A memorable occasion......Hmmmm.

Well make sure you get him thoroughly pissed at any establishment/s, it doesn't matter. Then......find an ugly old khatoey to give him a little cuddle and kiss and whatever else. Now the most important thing is to take lots and lots of photos, that way you'll be able to remind him of the great evening he had for years and years. In fact you may even be able to use them for financial gain if you ever have a falling out.

Now is that the evil streak coming out Teepee or what?

actually kind of a good idea to add a katoey in there somewhere with a camera to come in handy. something he and his friends would never forget! plus chanchao's got some really good suggestion. i like the idea of renting the upper floor of STH. really pvt!

take him to juicy bar,on loh kroh opposite stairway.plenty katoeys in there lol

or even to the peak complex, nice bar in the middle for him!

away from ladyboys - plenty of half decent bars, avoid the usual tack-spicy(meat market),bubble(most out of date club in cm imo),spotlight etc.(full of the sadder class of dirty old farang)

i know its a stag, but if you want a decent club at the end, check out volume 1(closes late),warm up or horizon.

    enjoy

  21. Great story, a common one though.

I hope the father, and all those like him some day die a painful slow death for his actions.

    "Do bad, get bad"

i agree,sh*t is happening all over the world like this.even here in england.hate to think what the world will be like in 10 years.the worlds gone mad!
