  1. You have to consider the expat population density in the different geographical areas you are referring to. The higher population centers will have a more 'diverse' group and as such the same type of interaction and 'potential' for things getting heated are obviously higher. I don't know which other community forum you are referring to, but from my viewpoint, as a moderator and watching all the forums, the Chiangmai forum is one of the better behaved of the groups even though it is one of the larger member bases. Bangkok and Pattaya probably the largest and reflects in the posting counts and diversity of posts and styles.

totally agree with that, this forum is very pleasant indeed, reflects the people of chiang mai on the whole, as opposed to......pattaya forum for instance :o different characters & mindset lets say.

seems to be a good camaradary (spelling?) here as alot of members know each other which helps.

btw any thai visa nights out between xmas and end of january,as it would be nice to put some names to faces.might well turn up at tuskers on new years eve, anyone going?

  2. i think i have narrowed my choice down to 2 or 3 places i might try.a nice atmosphereand a nice busy crowd would be nice.

tuskers or dukes i will plump for i think.ate at the red lion last year, pleasant enough, but lacking warmth and atmosphere.

is tuskers ticket only anyone(milton)?,as i dont arrive until december 22nd

  3. Hi there !

I'm arriving in CM on December and will surely want to dance the nights away again ...

Can someone update me with the latest/loudest best places for hardcore ravers ?

    :D

i started a thread on the best clubs in c mai a while back,i will try find the thread to link for you.

v club is very good(no dreggs from bubble & spicy there :o )

also warm up is a good place,as is volume 1 and fashion house to name but a few.

not sure if anything new opened up,will be back for my hols in 3 weeks to find out :D

  4. I think this has been confused by the fact that they have declared the 24th as a holiday to encourage people to go home and vote.

There has been no mention from any official sources that the 24th will be a dry day, just a holiday. Most Thais will have full pockets on the 24th from selling their vote, so will need somewhere to spend it.

Can't see the 24th being dry. My mate who owns a bar has heard nothing about this either, but has been told about the 22nd/23rd.

the following is the quote i read, from another thread, which prompted me to ask about this potentially "dry 3 days"

TV Channel 3 reports that because of the general election alcohol sales will be prohibited throughout the Kingdom from 6:00 PM on December 22nd to the 25th.

Should be an interesting Christmas holiday this year.

    Cheers!

  5. chiangmai foxy, england is a good place to celebrate x'mas. policies are a bit volatile here this part of the world.

Spot the man with a non-tourist related business! :o

    JxP

wrong jxp, everything in thailand is related to the tourist business. just helping a fellow forum member by giving a "constructive" suggestion.

    :D

"wrong" and "jxp" - not a combination of words that one sees very often! :D I'll consider myself told and quite rightly too, I will however debate that "everything" in Thailand is related to tourism, an (un)healthy percentage maybe but not everything. :D

My constructive tuppence worth - to the OP, Chiangmai Foxy, you have been coming here often enough and long enough, I am sure that you will not have too much of a problem enjoying yourself - where there's a will there's a way and it's starting to look like your worst fears will not be confirmed anyway. A dry(ish) 23rd in preparation for a mammoth Eve and Day could be the order of the day.

Anyway enough of my prattle, must get back to my non-tourism business. :D

    JxP

    thanks jxp,

hope you are correct, and thanks for the non pessimistic answer.

much appreciated, sure i will have a good time anyway as friends with me and know many ppl in C mai

    ps tigerbeer

yes you are correct, england is a good place at xmas, but i will be in thailand(flight, hotel booked, friends coming etc)

just wanted to clarifly the situation for when i arrive,as i had read in a thread in gen topics, about it being a 3 day ban

  6. just read that no alcohol can be bought/served 22nd - 25 dec in thailand, due to the forthcoming elections,as reported on the thai news.

surely during the peak time in thailand (exception of songkran),this cannot be so,can it?

the entertainment industry, bars, clubs etc will have its pocket well hit.xmas eve in changers may well be the worst yet.

many bars will find a way around this im sure :o

i cannot imagine a sober cesspit (spicy) on xmas eve.

  7. A lot of people are going to lose a lot of money over the busy Christmas period if they cannot serve alcohol.

If the election is on the 23rd why lengthen the ban over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day?

    Ridiculous.

typical! i land on the evening of the 21st.no alcohol for 4 days! wow a dry christmas.xmas eve will be boring throughout the kingdom, alot of farang money not being spent

  8. QUOTE (thai_narak @ 2007-11-23 09:21:53)

i don't fly airasia anymore due to the following reasons:

i have to book the flight 2-3 months before i travel to get a really fairly cheap ticket - my frequent route is kuala lumpur to bangkok and return.

if not booking early the price i usually end up paying online is about RM600+ (6,600+ baht) plus i have to park my car at the main airport and take the bus to the "low cost terminal" for about RM3 (33 baht). the flights are always delay so this is another "you get what you pay for" thing that money cannot compensate the hassles. for the return flight, if they are just delay for 30 minutes (which they are always) from bangkok i will miss the airport bus to the main airport and will have to pay RM60 (660 baht) for taxi to get my car from the main airport - my return flight is arriving normally at 11:30 PM from bangkok and the last bus is at midnight. in the end the total cost is about 7,233 baht without food and drinks plus a rat race during boarding running around the airport onto the plane.

for 2 years now, i fly with TG for 9,500 baht. no delays, with food and unlimited drinks, i can park at the main airport and just walk to/from the terminal building to the parking lot. the difference of about 2,000 baht is really nothing compare to all the hassles of airasia flight.

booking 2-3 months ahead of time is like gambling. twice i booked this early just loosing the money because my schedules had changed. this is not really flexible for business travellers like me.

//not a rant but this is just me...

but Air Asia have a check and change section on their website,so if your flight dates are changing, why cant/dont you just change online?

  9. Look at the bright site. There's not going to be any hooligans and football violence.

I think you will find that there are "Hooligans" from other countries too. Italians being the more noticable recently.

no hooligans!!!! you are so far off the mark.

england are tame, compared to the likes of poland and russia, italy are quite bad,but dont travel in huge numbers.

and as for the turks, the biggest bunch of murdering cowards out there.no fists and all knifes!!! (my local pub landlord murdered by them when leeds went to galatasar*y)

  10. hey guys,

i was chatting with my friends the other day in a dreary leeds bar :D as to what is all of our favourite bars in chiangers.

couldnt decide, but agreed on many things that help.

    1.good music

    2.option of food.

    3.friendly crowd/staff

    4.entertainment(pool Table)

since my last visit,i have read alot on this forum about several bars i havnt yet frequented, namely - tuskers,un irish, the pub.

tuskers seem extremely popular and has a great website, cannot believe i havnt been in my 5 previous visits.me and my friends particulary looking forward to a potential pool tournament at tuskers in dec/january as a few of them rather good.(well half the number1bar pool team who got 7 balled would agree :D) also the friday pub crawl:)

so to cut the chase, what would you say are the best bars out there, that cater to the above? (not Bottom of loh kroh bars or the boxing bars!:D:o

    must say i like the number1 bar,lucky bar(no food though),saloon,peak pool bar.as all have a good atmosphere

btw anyone been to the number1 bar since the refurbishment, how does it look

    cheers guys

  11. hi guys,

when i was last in chiang mai (january) building work was still ongoing oppostite the suriwongse where i was staying,is it now complete? if not i will choose a different hotel this time i think,or stay at the rear of hotel.

    cheers

  12. Air Asia don't have a problem with different named people booking (I know visa run companies to Penang who book on their card not the customers). They should accept UK debit cards as well as they have CVV numbers on the reverse. You could get a virtual credit card (you should have something beofre you come here - no plastic at all ? where do you live ?).

Of course get a flight booked ASAP. They are not making any more seats.

cheers guys,i have booked online for air asia midday flight 12 40pm(2800 baht inc taxes etc) using my dads mastercard :o as the only choices to pay were visa/mastercard

lol i do have card myself(switch/maestro) never needed mastercard/visa,as always pay cash/switch or paypal etc usually.

  13. Absolutely- book a flight ASAFP.

Thai ppl don't celebrate Christmas... New Years is their festive day. They will be on the move, and flights will be booked up, as you have already noticed with Thai Airways.

Furthermore, the price is cheaper if you book in advance. Prices go up drastically on Air Asia as the flight day approaches.

    thanks for the reply.

is the best place to book online at air asia?

i dont have visa/mastercard etc,but i can use my dads card i take it(same surname)

  14. hey guys, finally managed to sort my flight from the uk.

    i land 7 30am sat 29th dec,and want to get a flight asap to c mai(10am onwards) from suvarnabhumi.

i see only thai and air asia are my only options.

should i pre book a seat,as i take it the flights will be popular at this time of year.

i already see thai airways full booked up on this day, even the expensive seats!!!!!!

air asia is 2800 baht for the 12 40pm flight, are all domestic flight this expensive over xmas?

even nok air from don m is 2000b

    thanks

  16. Let's assume the plane is on time.

    Exit plane 6:40

    Through immigration 7:05

Retrieve bag and through customs 7:25

    In taxi 7:30

    Arrive Don Meuang 8:20

    Check-in 8:25

    Just done it.

    thanks briggsy,thats interesting.

i think what i will have to do is play it by ear.if i get my bags by 7 30pm ish, will either get a taxi to dm or go upstairs to try get a ticket for air asia 840pm as check in is 40 mins before flight (8pm) if its late, will just go to a counter and get them to sort me a nearby hotel for the night

    thanks

  17. hey guys, hope you can advise me

how long would it take in a taxi from airport to airport

    8pm on a sunday night(23rd dec)

with it being election day,are the roads likely to be even quieter.

    problem i have is - land suvarnbhuni 6 40pm

thai airways at don muang is 9 30pm (this is the last flight),

and last flight from suvarnabhuni is air asia at 8 40pm

im thinking if i can can get off the plane, imm, bags etc in 1hour 15mins or so,maybe i can do it.

    do i have a chance?

    thanks for any help

  18. hi folks .... im arriving in Bangkok at about 6.40pm on a weekday January 2008 and would prefer to fly direct to chang mai after this as soon as possible

is anyone in the know regarding the airlines that make this trip and what time the later flights are and even costs if possible

    thanks

hi,i am the same as you.arrive 6 40pm etihad.i also want to fly to chiang mai the same night

    2 options it seems

1.air asia flight 8 40pm(1 hr 30 mins to get off plane and pick up bags-will be tight maybe)

2.taxi to don muang airport for the 9 30pm flight

i am in the same position as you,i am thinking if i get through immigration and baggage quickly,i should get the air asia flight.

if not 30-40 mins to don muang in 8pm traffic,to get the thai airways flight

if any delays,no chance! and i will just stay in bangkok the night.

hard to plan ahead for the same night flight, depends on how smoothly things run :o

  19. hi,just wondering which airlines now fly fron the new airport to chiang mai.

i land from manchester sat 23rd december around 7pm and am wanting to get a flight straight to c mai.

    last year i think i got a 10 30pm thai airways flight.

what options do i now have after 8pm to cmai.one to go i hear has moved to don m as has nok air?

    thanks in advance

    --  ex BKK 2040 hrs FD 3236, Thai Air Asia, that might be a tad tight timing;

--  ex DMK 2135 hrs TG 1124, time enough for transfer from Swampyboom.

That's about all in the current (well, October) THAILAND AIRLINE TIMETABLE.  This is a handy booklet, even since they raised the price to baht 95.  I try to get one monthly at Asia Books, SE-ED, etc.  Keep exipred one in my car.  Also handy for hotel tel #s, embassies, etc.  Used to subscribe but it seemed to take some time for delivery.

  21. I think that Nokair only fly from DM. I think Airasia and Thai are the only BKK-CNX flights. Looking on the Airasia website there's a flight at 2040 lands at CNX 2150 but it seems to think that the 23rd is a Sunday rather than a Saturday!

yes my mistake,23rd is a sunday - Election Day!!!!!

is there likely to be any problems re flights due to election day?

btw thai airways 21 30pm should be fine for me,air asia might be too tight.
