  1. I've got to have my 2 cents worth guys, as one of the few Derby Co. fans in Chiang Mai, possibly the only one. I would be happier if Hull win next Saturday and Leeds lose, as Leeds will already be relegated by the time they get to Derby. The reasoning is that they will not have anything to play for and hopefully it will be an easier game for DCFC.

From what I can gather LUFC fans have been allotted only 1500 tickets, this was due to the fans continual refusal to be seated at other grounds throughout the country over the season.

I feel that there still might be a twist in the tail yet to come before its is decided who will get automatic promotion. (How could MacIndoe miss the 90 min. penalty today?).

Although the quality of football in the CCC has not been great this season, the fact that there have been so many teams involved in the mix up, I feel it has made it more exciting for a greater number of fans.

Hopefully Sheff Wed. and Burnley might ruffle a few feathers this week.

    Good luck everyone.

maybe its the same derby fan that i know in c mai.guy called rob(early 30's i think),drinks in the peak pool bar alot, number 1 bar now and again! maybe there is 2 lol :o

  2. My Crystal ball tells me that Leeds WILL survive this season.

I still stand by this bearing in mind that Luton ar doomed leaving four teams fighting to avoid the remaining two slots.....and it would appear that an in-form Leeds can avoid the drop to me.

Its funny that Sunderland has returned to the fold after an absence of almost two seasons :D

If they get promoted as I am sure they will....there may not be many posts again next season :o

they may well get promoted ,but they arnt good enough to stay there unless they buy some class players

Give Leeds a chance ... they might get promoted back to the Coca Cola Championship at the first attempt. I am sure they can stay up in league one next season. Surely they'll get a point against Hartlepool.

As for Sunderland, we still have great opportunities to throw away promotion before we even reach the Premiership. Very wise of Roy Keane to say we could compete with the likes of Chelsea ... and then lose 3-1 at Colchester! :D Ha'way the lads!

we have to beat ipswich at home, and maybe hope to get a point away at derby on last day!

if the last game matters to leeds and derby, they are gonna ban leeds fans, fearing they will smash up the ground

    come on leeds

shame if we go down,we miss bradford city who will be in league 2 and miss hartlepool who are promoted to championship.our biggest game will be huddersfield town! 5 years ago it was ac milan, barca, man u etc

  3. Well not quite but are there any places its celebrated in England? (apart from in Thai restaurants and Thai peoples homes) I know it wont be the same as having loads of happy smiling faces throwing water at one another but its gotta be better than the usual Saturday night with bruised faces throwing bottles and punches at one another :o

    Anyone?

very much doubt it,none of my friends here in england have even heard about it,until i explained to them what its like.i am then met then with the response - sounds great(sarcastic tone)

well i love it,and it could only be fun in thailand.im sure if people starting throwing water in england, there would be even more black eyes and angry people.its done in thailand for a reason.and great cos its hot! england, april, dont think so!

    so no chance :D

chiang mai here i come for songkran again

  4. Personally I Like Warm Up, Monkey Club, and Bangrak.

I am younger (25) so these are more aimed towards the younger crowd.

Warm up has a "lounge" where a DJ spins techno (usually a house varient) Monkey is great for drinking outside the live band area and bangrak has one of the best Thai rock setups IMHO

There is a new bar opening on the corner of Chang puak and Tapae right after the moo kata, looks like they are going to open a cool place.

How about a more extensive review? I have been to the Monkey a couple of times and it is a nice place. THe others I don't know and not eveyone here is in the pension guild so I would like to see postings of these other venues.

    thanks

yeh warm up is cool.many different rooms - house, hip hop,old skool etc

V club is fantastic - open til 6am,great crowd.dj plays house and trance

fashion house is a cool club as is volume 1,monkey and discovery

as for good bars to drink, personally i like

    rooftop bar

    number 1 bar

    lucky bar

    shamrock

    peak

    cm saloon

the what and old bell are quite cool

    too many to mention

  5. Hi guys,i land in bk from england on the evening of the 6th april.flown to c mai domestically for songkran twice before.i know alot of thais go to c mai for songkran, but is the 6th early enough to just get a ticket to c mai when i land in bangkok airport,or should i pre book a ticket online.or should it be early enough to just buy in airport.

    thanks

  6. very smart new bar just opened 2 weeks ago(not sure of the destination,5 mins from centre) called so far so good.owned by a 26yr old english guy, called guy, from london.he's spent £30,000 on the bar and outside area, very classy joint, mainly frequented by trendy thais.cannot remember the location,a couple of cool thai girls from warm up took me.anyone know the place?

anyway im back at mad songkran and counting the days until we arrive.

by the way,the classy new bar i referred to 'sofa so good' has quite a warming story behind it.i remember guy telling me he was an inches away from death in the tsunami, and an interview from him was recently done, just as he was planning the grand opening.apparantly doing great business already, certainly busy when i left for england.

    good luck guy

  7. I have a few friends still over there and a few of them frequent the pink light district rather alot.

particullary cherry bar, where one of them has been seeing the best looking one in there, and the mug just took her on holiday.(she must of had a gap in her calendar, until the next arrives!)

anyway i will ask them to get the full address, but as samsipet says his address should still get there.

  8. well iv just arrived back in england after spending 1 month in c mai.the place and nightlife seems to improve every time i come.

i went to a club called V Club a few times and was very impressed, largely thai crowd.the place got busy at around 3am onwards.(Mahidol Rd - near the airport) very good house/trance tunes and very busy, and full of cool people.

bubble has improved also but still has the tacky element to it,imo

as for lucky bar,big improvement.always busy 3am onwards, spent part of new years eve in there and didnt leave unil 11am in the morning and it was still busy!same female faces in there as ever.

blue bar next door also big improvement from charming bar, with ja still the owner.

  9. I've heard that "Riverside" and "Spices"'are night clubs were one can actually dance on a dance floor (as opposed to around your own table), making it actually possible to connect with people. Any others? Thanks.

riverside is a restaurant, and i wouldnt call spicy a 'club' by any stretch of the imagination - more like a cattle market full of bar girls,p*ssed up farang looking for an easy girl, and freelance pro's.you can certainly 'connect' will a mixture of all sorts of different people though!

if you want a club, you should try - horizon, warm up,volume 1,fashion house, bubble, monkey club or apparantly the new lucky is supposed to ok.myself i prefer warm up,volume 1 and horizon.i will try bubble again when i return as it has been revamped since my last visit at songkran.

btw anyone know the closing time of lucky now?

    Grand opening Tommorow

    heres the website Lucky Bar

so,did anyone go to the big opening or since/beforehand?

    looks better,is there a good atmosphere,good music.

judging by the photos on the website, still looks like its 2 seperate bars!,i thought the lucky owners were knocking the wall joining charmin down and turning it into 1!

as i see it there is still lucky bar,and a bar next door with blue walls

  10. 1. Number One. The name says it is. Lot's of pretty smiles, no hassles, talkative expats.

    2. Can Do Bar. I haven't been there yet but any place that gets condom bouquets at their grand opening is OK with me.

    3. John's Place. Small Chang, 28 baht. Mekong whiskey, 28 baht. That's with a "Pathetic Old Man Discount Card."

    4. Linda's Bar. A dozen girls waiting out front at 6 PM can make a man thirsty.

    5. Foxy Lady. Only place that serves up Beer Lao with bikinis.

    6. The Peak Pool Bar. Wild turkey, Jose Cuervo...90 baht.

    7. The Pub. British Peacocks replace the bar girls.

    8. Chiangers and Bangers. But only during a ladies pool tournament.

    9. Marijuana. Would have been Number 1 except they don't have any. Not many customers either.

    10. Tiger Bar. Good thing they roasted a whole pig instead of a tiger at their grand opening.

so hows the peak pool bar now? the english owner bob sold up a few month ago i was told.i found the bar a good starting point, before we hit the busy areas.

One of my favourites has to be the chilled out rooftop bar

i too would say spotlight, been dragged in a few times with my english friends.half decent music and good layout, compared to foxy lady, poor set up imo.cheesy music also

  13. Hi,

My wife and I have decided to close the restaurant for New Years Eve and New Years Day.

We want to go to Chiang Mai, spend some time with family there and then go out somewhere to party.

We are looking for a place where there is a countdown, balloons, hats and all that stuff, maybe a glass of cheap bubblies at midnight and dancing. A buffet would be nice, too.

The cheaper the better of course, but the fun factor is more important to us than the price.

We have our accommodations already, so we are not looking for a place that offers a package.

Anyways, I didn't see a Chiang Mai New Years Thread yet, so I thought this would be a good time to start one :o

last year i spent nye in hot shots, quite a good night, countdown etc.very busy

this is a good place if you prefer mainly fun loving thais with a small percentage of farang.

im sure places like bubble,x cite(x - zone?) warm up,vol 1,horizon, spicy(cough) etc will be packed also

not sure where we will spend it this year, maybe some recommendations?

what is the new 'lucky bar' like, anyone know?

but im looking forward to xmas and year in c mai again,we arrive just in time for xmas eve:)

  14. many things - but the main things are -

the laid back attitude to life

cooler than bangkok, especially the evening when drinking!

    very cheap

the people are so friendly to me and very helpful

so easy to make friends(if you want to)

none or very little CHAVS,as its too far to travel for them! (ibiza, benidorm, faliraki, magaluf much closer to england lol)

    chilled out bars and clubs

    many more

  15. Well then! I've done it and arrived . . .

and as predicted appear to be the only Fareng in the village! (Lamphun that is!)

Have been wizzed around a bit by g/f and family and seem to have managed to change my time clock enough to cope with being up all night and asleep in the afternoon!

Have located the Red Lion (appears to be a German pub?)

When's a good time to fraternise with the locals? I had a wander around yesterday, but most of the Faengs wouldn't make eye contact with me . . .is this some unpoken local custom, or just holiday makers being snooty? . . .answers on a postcard please!!!!

Well . . .it's looking cloudy today so I guess I'd better put my mind in gear and do some

    work! :o

    Cathc you guys later

    david

PS is there anything I shouldn't miss while here?

no the red lion is definately not german! run by a liverpublian guy(hence the liverpool memorabillia throughout the bar) and nothing more english than the pub name 'the red lion'

the establishments next door are german though

  16. me and my friend arrive xmas eve, some friends who will already be there are going to book us into the 'house' as they say it is a great place to go for xmas day.so im taking their word for it

  17. My impression of this airport it that it gets the job done, as good as other airports in the region and with better looks than Don Muang.

One difference with the neighbours is that the expectations built before the opening were huge. The complaining may be proportional to that.

I suggest you go and have a look yourself!!!

Then go and see what its like at Changi Airport and at KL. There is no comparison.

The arrivals hall is nothing short of scandalous, as I have stated before God help the folks arriving at Christmas time!!! It will take them until New Years day to get outside!!!!

I hope not, I arrive evening of the 22nd :D and have to be back in KL for the 27th :D .

A colleague has just returned from a visit to LOS and he reckons the airport building are much more pleasant for departures than arrivals. Personally I don't much care what the terminal buildings look like. An airport is there to serve but one function and that is to get me out of the plane and into the country, and vice versa. As long as it does that reasonably efficiently I'll be satisfied.

As for the taxi touts, they're a bluddy menace worldwide you just have to push past them and find the official taxi counters. I just hope I can find my usual limo service. They aren't cheap, Baht2500 to Pattaya, but the car is new, generally a Merc, and the driver competant and alert. My life is worth more than a few Baht any day. :o

cwilliam - you really shouldnt post such negative posts, the above will no doubt scare first time visitors to the new airport such as me! it being my first time to new airport - and myself landing teatime on the 22 DEC.how do you mean "god help folks arriving at christmas"

as i say i land at teatime 22nd dec and have booked a domestic flight to c mai at 10 30pm with thai airways.

so are you saying if i land at 6 30pm,i will not be able to, once landed be able to get my flight 4 HOURS LATER to chiang mai in time?

this is very disconcerting as i am travelling all the way from england on my own!

It was myself that wrote the above, and I apologise if I have misled you. You certainly will not have a problem getting your connecting flight. I was using a little "poetic licence" in as much as the Arrivals hall is extremely crowded and difficult for you to meet people there, however it wont take That long to fight through the crowds. Relax and I hope you enjoy your stay

    yeh,sorry i named the wrong guy.no worries.

i am flying manchester-dubai-bangkok with emirates.then going to domestic to get a thai airways flight iv just booked going to cmai.

glad i will have enough time thanks - unless of course a delay getting to bangkok, then maybe i will be stuck in bk over christmas as more flights im sure will be scarce over this period.touch wood,no delays.

    thanks

  18. With all of the other stuff that has been written, has anyone answered ,,,,,, with all the redo with Anusarn Mkt, is Scott [O'Malleys] closing, moving or is he not effected.....

It would be a shame if O'Malleys was to close. Even with the indifferent staff that they have (they had) you can still have a nice meal there and it has some ambience as well. (I was trying to think of her name and then it came back "a rose by another name...")

With Matthew out of the Red Lion I guess that there is a chance that it might now resurrect itself.

Watch this space though for the happenings at the "old hard rock" and follow it's fortunes. Haven't been in there for a while but at least with it's "olde" atmosphere it gives it a chance of success.

i certainly hope the atmosphere of the red lion has improved,i found the people skills of the thai workers especially very limited and almost ignorant to your needs.

read alot about a guy called mathew here - is this guy the owner(scouser guy) always found him to be the most friendly.

also is this new rock hard bar, next to the pornping? as i thought hot shots and bubble were next door to pornping?

    thanks

  20. Opening date: 'soon'. So make that before high season. My guess is they need another month.

    > It was a great party as well, even got to grafitti the toilet walls (its allowed)

:-) Yes, liked that too. :-)

so,has the new lucky bar had its opening yet?

    if so,any name,closing time,type of music,class of people etc

    thanks

  21. hey guys
