The exorbitant price Thailand is paying for high household debt
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
To be fair to former PM Prayut, the increasing debt issue goes back to 2014 when he overthrew the elected Yingluck government and held office into 2023: March 5, 2023 "Political parties can no longer evade household debt crisis facing Thailand" https://www.thaipbsworld.com "Thailand’s household debt has seen a sharp increase over the past 10 years from 59.3 percent of GDP in 2010 to 86.9 percent in the third quarter of last year." You might learn more reading "Buddhist Fury: Religion and Violence in Southern Thailand" by Michael Jerryson. "An image of a Buddhist monk holding a handgun or the idea of a militarized Buddhist monastery tends to stretch the imagination; yet these sights exist throughout Southern Thailand." The Southern Malay Muslim conflict reminds me of Christian suppression of indigenous North American Indians.

The exorbitant price Thailand is paying for high household debt
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Remember this from July 2022: "Big Read – Household debts solution team set to propose ways to resolving the elephant in the room" https://www.thaienquirer.com/42047/ In June 2022 General Prayut PM since 2014) appointed a committee (Committee on Debt Resolution of the People) headed by Supattanapong to look at ways to resolve this issue. This committee was tasked with looking for ways to find effective solution to the household debt situation "in all dimensions and every credit portfolio." (my bold) And here we are in 2024Q1 debt worsening further with no viable solutions yet. Criminal negligence comes to mind. -
It's been my understanding from some Thai friends that they get more Thai healthcare insurance coverage (up to 100%) if a one night private hospital stay is required. Even with my foreign healthcare insurance overnight stay is considered in-patient that covers 100% coverage vs out-patient coverage at 85%. Personally it's worth the extra 15% to get out of a hospital ASAP.

US pledges boost in semiconductor investment for Thailand
Srikcir replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
The Biden administration is providing $1.5 billion to the computer chip company GlobalFoundries to expand its domestic production in New York and Vermont. The announcement is the third award of direct financial support for a semiconductor company under the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act. Thailand would benefit by investing itself. -

Considering the warship HTMS Sukhothai that sunk due to high winds and strong waves, the HTMS Chonburi would be best moved to dry dock. -

This is why perhaps the RTN is never involved in Thailand military coups. -
In case anyone missed reading Joepai's posted link, an excerpt: "Srettha’s Pheu Thai (For Thais) party did not win May’s general election but came in second behind the anti-establishment Move Forward Party, whose radical manifesto called for bridling the nation’s generals, conglomerates, and royal palace. It was blocked from power by a military-appointed Senate despite securing a plurality of 151 out of 500 legislative seats. Pheu Thai then cobbled together a motley coalition of 10 royalist and establishment parties to secure Srettha the top job thanks to Senate backing." Interesting word "motley."

MFP warned of legal implications ahead of general debate
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
So effectively the Thai Parliament (and the NLA for that matter) has become a One-Party system. How is it operating any differently than the CCP or the VCP (Vietnam Communist Party)? It seems lost that Thailand once fought against a communist insurgency guerrilla war lasting from 1965 until 1983 only to become something akin. Such "cautionary note" would seem to damage Thailand's reputation as a democracy and deserving of defamation and/or other prosecutorial attention. -
Illegal workers in South Korea: Amnesty for Thai nationals
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
This indicates as a minimum a South Korea policy addendum or change is needed so that legal foreign workers do not lose their existing legal working status due to change of employers. Amnesty is the wrong (and indicated possibly impossible) approach. With regard for foreign legal workers (be they Thai or other) in South Korea needing better Korean language skills, why don't Thailand and South Korea work jointly to make additional language skills available, ie., partnership language funding to specified South Korean employers? -
RTAF to procure either Gripen E-series or F-16 Block 70 jets
Srikcir replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
All in Thai but the surprise is there is a Thai Weapon Channel. Any comments by those who can translation? Hard to find a comparison between the Gripen E and F-14 Block 70 This link is pretty consistent with conclusions for choice by other nations: https://defenceupdate.in/gripen-e-vs-f-16-block-70-one-best-choice-indian-airforce/ Personally, IAMHERE makes a good point. Who can come to your support more quickly after acquisition - Sweden or the US? The US military has a very intensive theater presence, not to mention existing Asian-Pacific supply channels. And with Sweden becoming a NATO member, it may be more directed towards European support. -

Thai envoy unveils plan for Taiwanese investment boom

Unless Thailand recognizes Taiwan as a sovereign state, Thailand will have to include China in its negotiations with Taiwan. "What Is the Motive of China Behind Its Interest in Taiwan?", https://bestdiplomats.org/why-china-wants-taiwan/ Given Thailand's economic dependence on China for investment, tourism and trade, Thailand is not in a position such as the US to ignore China's One China policy with Taiwan to negotiate without China also a partner. -
Typically, "actual results" requires ratification by both nation's legislatures as to terms and conditions of the trade partnership. For example see the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) that was replaced by the United States- Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). If both countries move quickly enough I would expect a trade partnership by fall of 2024. Diplomatically that would be fast.

Incorrect. "An insurgency is a rebellion. Insurgencies are movements to overthrow governments." In this case a rebellion to Thailand's overthrow of an indigenous Malay Muslim sovereign state The Kingdom of Patani, forced annexation into the Kingdom of Thailand (similar to Russia's forced annexation of Crimea) and repression of the Malay Muslim language, traditions, ethnicity, and customs to make Malay Muslims second-class citizens. In effect it is Thailand who is the terrorist.

"Acting on a tipoff, about 50 members of the security forces rushed to lay siege to a rented house in Trobon sub-district, where two suspected insurgents were hiding." A little too anxious to laying siege (generally with violence) without confirming who made the tipoff (army?) and identifying the two suspects? Asking to negotiate AFTER laying siege is not done in good faith and invited resistance. But as the South continues to be under a State of Emergency since at least 2014, no one in the South has any constitutional protections.

Officials Crack Down on Unauthorized Chinese Influencers in Bangkok
Srikcir replied to snoop1130's topic in Bangkok News
"What are the legal requirements for starting a business in the U.S.? Foreign entrepreneurs must register their business with the state in which they plan to operate, obtain a business license, and register for state and local taxes. Depending on the industry, additional permits and licenses may be required." https://www.immi-usa.com/how-to-start-a-business-in-usa/ While not a work permit per se such as in Thailand, there are regulatory controls that must be considered. How foreign entrepreneurs are able to be in the US to conduct businesses would be an immigration issue.
