  1. He’s spot on as caricatures go.
Now if he put a bone in her nose it would be racist.

  2. True story from a good few years ago
Guy I worked with was allowed a crate/box of substantial size to send back to UK at company cost.
Couple of days before he and crate were leaving we went round for a few goodbye beers.
The crate was full of cheap stuff and cheap household items. When we asked why are you sending that crap back he just said ' check the wood the crate's made from.' The bottom of the crate/box was one piece and quite large. The rest quite wide and solid planks.
Rare and expensive tropical hardwood worth a mint in UK.
His brother was a cabinet maker and reckoned there was a dining room table and six chairs in the wood. [emoji38][emoji38]

Now that’s thinking outside of the box!

  3. Quite a few 'jealous guy' posts here from people who never had a job that allowed them to buy big ticket items. I have 3 gold watches sitting in my safe here, and while they don't make me a better person, they give me pleasure to own. I don't usually wear them, preferring a low key IWC or Panerai. In your face, gentlemen.
PS: I am kind to children, dogs, maids and street workers. [emoji12][emoji12][emoji12][emoji12]

I’ll see your 3 gold watches, raise you 10 baht of Thai gold, ฿100k cash and a limited edition crown royal bag to keep it all in my safe here.

  4. But do those Thais get pissed off if someone spends more than they would because it will "ruin it for everyone"?

Not exactly but they do lament not telling them you were going to spend any amount over ฿100 because they always know where you could have gotten it cheaper. This would allow them to buy it for 80 and sell it to you for 90, win win or get it for you at 90 making nothing but gaining favor with the seller for bringing a sale and then expecting a 10 baht tip which brings the price back to what you can do on your own.
I’ve begun over-over tipping since this thread began out of spite.
  5. It's always been that way.  One of the less appealing characteristics of the expat community in Thailand is that people are excessively concerned about how much other expats spend.

They must be assimilating well into Thai culture then. I neither speak nor understand conversational Thai, I know a lot of Thai names of things but usually only if my wife is the one enunciating them and yet I can pick out baht and rxy between Thais speaking and it seems to be the two most frequent words in their conversations.
Early on I used to ask what the conversation was about knowing it involved money (most likely mine) until I learned it’s alway the same stuff, how much you/they paid/owed/borrowed/want to borrow/need co-sign, do we want to buy some car, rai, factory, beach house, etc.
My wife explained how it’s rather normal and not considered too insulting along with things like blurting out someone looks a little fat. After a few trips to the US meeting most of my friends and family she now sees the cultural differences (and how I feel about money talk) as not once over the years has anyone discussed money or called anyone fat.

  6. Grow trees so you can get a loan.sounds like a great plan to get people off the poverty line.how about allow foreigners to own one rai that'll put some money into the poor people's pocket quicker than watching a tree grow so they can get themselves into debt and lose their land to the banks.

Yup,first person to nail the scheme. Every Thai able will be borrowing against as many seedling trees as they can get their hands on. Vote buying by another name.

  7. When my wife wins a ฿20 million lottery I’m having her reinvest in a miniature golf course here in our little city. She enjoys playing and we look for a course in most locations when we travel the US. IMG_4976.PNG
Ultimately I imagine it’ll become my private course after the novelty wears off like most great new business ideas in Thailand. Stick to noodles and ฿20 plastics shops if you’re looking for longevity here.

  8. American Presidential politics are fickle, wake me up when that changes.
8 years of Clinton lead to 8 years of Bush which lead to 8 years of Obama which brings us to Trump. So the only question is will it be 4 or 8 years.
Democrats lost approximately 1000 state and local seats during Obama’s 8 years.
Voter turnout is apathetic and therefore the election results don’t necessarily reflect the true sentiment of the entire nation. The results only reflect the 60% at best that are willing to go to the effort to be polled.

“Voter turnout in the United States fluctuates in national elections. In recent elections, about 60% of the voting eligible population votes during presidential election years, and about 40% votes during midterm elections. Turnout is lower for odd year, primary and local elections.”

  9. Keep in mind the third probably most historically consequential McCain memorial service is still coming up at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.. There, G.W. Bush and Obama will be giving eulogies. Then finally the burial at the United States Naval Academy Annapolis, Maryland.

Most decent Americans recognize McCain as a great (but of course flawed) American and "trump" as a national disgrace and embarrassment.

    Respect to John McCain.

How did trump get in the room? I thought the topic was Palin and McCain.
