  1. How on earth would anybody get a home loan of 4 million baht with a monthly income of 30.000 baht selling cosmetics?

And then it goes on saying she pays more than half her income paying off her debt?

At the current lending rates between 6.2 and 7.5 % her monthly payments at the lowest 6.2 % rate would be 24.499 baht a month for 30 years I would say that is a bit more than half her income !

Add utility bills / maintenance to that and her entire monthly income is gone.

Not sure how this people calculate their ability to repay - but this loan was doomed from the beginning and the people approving the loan should have realized that.

It looks like the banks are at it again cheating on loan applications lending money to people who are obviously not able to repay - just like before the last financial crises - otherwise this would not be possible.

Bank and money shop loans are given with guarantors, usually parents signing over their land. It’s bad form to decline to be the backstop for a Thai who asks you to co-sign for them, especially family.

  2. 35 years ago a 31 year old male friend after entering a competition on a chocolate bar,  won a 16 day Spanish cruise trip for 2. At the time not being in a relationship and preferring not to take any of his male friends, decided to go alone, believing he would meet the girl of his dreams in the romantic setting of a Mediterranean cruise.

After a couple of days on the ship, he noticed that all the younger women were with boyfriends or husbands. On the third day he started to get hit on by elderly rich Jewish widows, mostly Americans looking for a toyboy romance or something more permanent. He told me that each time he went for a meal or relaxing by the pool, they would aim for him, trying to start conversations, asking if he had a girlfriend and some even invited him back to their cabins. He said that those elderly women really believed they could buy him but he wasn`t interested and eventually it became very irritating.

That was the first and last time my friend ever went on a cruise. He later did meet a lovely and beautiful Viennese woman on a bus in London. They dated, fell in love, were married and today now in his 60s, has 2 children, 3 grandchildren and all lived happily ever after.

Point is; money can`t buy attraction or love.

At 31 I’d have gone back to all those old gals cabins if they were cute just for the adventure,,for free! It beats sitting in a deck chair alone for a week.
  3. If you don't like Songkran, what are you doing living in Thailand?

This is their New Year's celebration.

If not about water fighting, it is a holiday that happens to center around water and the virtues for the coming year

It's good luck to have water tossed on you and talc.

Songkran is an absolutely wild and fun time!

My wife is Thai National and dislikes what’s become the contemporary festival behavior.
It may have something to do with having her breasts groped and necklace stolen while trying to defend herself as a teen girl or just being an adult now and not wanting to be soaked every time she leaves the house for a week.
    Should she leave the country?

  4. Absolutely, as noted before, I just needed somewhere to vent.

And if you want somewhere worse than Thailand for "face" issues, try Korea. My time there taught me how to phrase any question so that the answer would be "yes".

Then you can picture me, a younger American supervisor telling an older Korean carpenter, Mr. Park, his work was wrong and him arguing “ you don’t know, I know, 20 years I’m working, you don’t know!” (In a deep and assertive voice).
After showing him the blueprints he was given to follow were my source of criticism he responds “they don’t know, I know, my ways better!” To which I agreed may be true but explained my job was to make it look the the drawing and told him to fix it or go home. He begrudgingly fixed it and we got along fine after that.

  5. We went through all of this before we moved here.  A Queen U.S. sheet will not fit a Thai King.  If you have a Thai King sized bed use U.S. King size.  I recommend getting standard pockets. Do not get deep as the fitted sheets might be a little loose. The flat is no problem.

    US king measure 76" x 80"
    Thai King bed measures 72" x 77"

There is a California king and queen size option that can match Thai sizes closer. The pillow cases needed downsizing in our case.

  6. I am building a roof in steel on a house.
The distance of the columns are 4.5 metres centre to centre.
The tiles on the roof are the CPAC concrete type (4 kilos per tile)
The only support of the Purlins in the Architect drawings are the green verticle lines.
I am think that that would not be adequate.
I am thinking of adding steel horizontal supports (green) as diagram A or adding steel diagonal horizontal supports (green) as diagram B to get triangles for extra strength to carry the weight of the concrete tiles.

I was thinking B but the Thai builder is saying A.

    Your opinions appreciated?
