I imagine that seeing that France and Britain have been mentioned it will be normal tourist visas. Also being that they do not use VOA. Why shouldn’t this work, two consulats have already closed in France, making it virtually impossible to get a visa without an appointment. For me it would have meant a flight and two nights in Paris. I think they’ll be fazing out all the consulats, which cost a lot of money to run. If Myanmar , Cambodia and Vietnam can do it , I’m quite sure Thailand can. I for one will be very happy.

Apart from the bad exchange rate, it’s the kamikaze drivers that frighten “ normal” tourists away. While in Europe the road rules are getting stricter and speed limits lower, it’s all hell let loose on Thailand’s roads and nobody does an intelligent thing about it ! Families with children don’t go to a country that is known everywhere as being dangerous.

Most Europeans know all about Thailand. They came here in the good days when the beaches and water were clean and prices much much lower. There wasn’t a lot of competition for beach holidays then. They won’t come back.

Thanks, was just worrying about downloading a photo as i don’t have a computer only iPad. Having used an iPad for years I’ve lost any compter skills I had ages ago.

It is not a question of gender ! No one should be slapped for doing their job . I would have dragged him to court.

Hi all, I’ll be going to Myanmar in January so will need a visa. I know there is a evisa. I don’t have a computer , ( only iPad) and I’m also not sure I would know how to download the photo. I can always go to the consul in Bangok but I’d rather avoid a second 2/3 day stay there as I’m already spending Xmas holidays there when the consulat will be closed. My question is, are there respectable visa agents in Pattaya that can do this for me ? Are they safe and legal ? Thanks.

It’s not only problems at the borders. Certain embassies are refusing SETV visas only because the return flight date is over their limit. How stupid is that. And a loss of earnings for the Thai government in visa fees. You can show huge bank accounts, have tickets out of the country, and they still refuse your visa! Ridiculous.

Fanjita, hi, i don’t think you understood my post.
What I meant was that I hope that they accept a reservation for one guest, meaning me alone. I have often found in the past that some restaurants avoid taking reservations for people dining alone. I want only one Christmas dinner, not eat all day.

Looks wonderful, I’m hoping to be able to reserve for one guest ?

I would choose
voluntary return under international supervision.

Seems sure that with the current exchange rates there won’t be a lot of sales. How on earth do they manage the thousands of condos laying empty ?Of course, lackof a good visa for people staying longer than a month or two doesn’t help.

Back to my first post above, i was told, you are not a tourist, tourists stay 2/3 weeks. So what am I ? I think I’ve heard the description “ snowbirds”. The larger percentage of people over 50, fill up the condos all over Thailand ( anyone have an idea approx?)
This , plus a healthy bank balance allows quite an input into Thai society/ economics. Just imagine if all the foreigners renting suddenly disappeared ? The visa system needs to be completely reviewed and the difference between backpackers, families , short stay, long stay and “snowbirds” taken into consideration. Changing the rules and visas everyone Year helps no one. Just look at the huge queues at immigration offices.

Maybe they have cottoned on to the fact that thousands of potentially “ good” tourists don’t come any more because of a lack of help at their local consulate/ embassy back home ? I for one cannot get a visa in Paris because my return flight ticket is dated over the three months ( 2 month plus one month extension limit ) . Even though I have a ticket , paid , out of the country and well over the limit bank statements. They just don’t care a damn. For the moment, I come visa free, extension, and then leave and do a visa elsewhere. I don’t work, spend four + months in Thailand, rent a lovely condo and generally enjoy myself. I don’t class myself as an unwanted tourist in Thailand and yet I am treated as one. Most of my neighbours, /friends, who, like myself, spend our winters in Thailand have the same problem .

Lets hope they don’t knock down Rompo market, it’s the only one in that area. The fruit and veg is good and well priced. Also, there’s the Kiss restaurant which I’m sure a lot of locals would miss.

Hi, Anyone know if it’s still ok to move around ( Jomtien to Bangkok etc) and not be obliged to re do a TM30 ? I always do it when arriving from France and when I last asked, the officer at Jomtien said I didn’t have to again if I was going to Bangkok and back again to the same address. Also, can someone remind me what is needed ? The condo office will do their bit as usual. Thanks.

The ones I’ve had in Indonesia are wonderful. Where do they come from there, and what’s their secret ? Quite big, flat skin.

Unfortunately for the markets and ordinary street side shops, malls are the way to go. It’s the same all over the world . Come rain or shine, heatwave or storm, the mall is a great place to hang out. Hard for small individual shops to pay the rent, so they usually attract the larger stores and brand names. That they work or not depends on the brand, I’ve seen 50 + queuing to get into some shops like Vuitton or Chanel in Bangkok , and I doubt they wait that long not to buy. Lots of well off Chinese ,Japanese etc for these shops. Just take a look at Paragon and Central world. Central Festival Pattaya seems to be doing quite well

30 years ago there used to be a very marked high and low season. Tourists only came here for the trecking in the north, the temples of Bangok and the joys of the beautiful beaches in the south. It was really a November to March high season with a peak at Christmas and New Year. There were no condos to rent for months on end and life was completely different , hardly any cars on the roads etc.
nowadays there are cheap condos every hundred yards which attract all the Russians , Scandinavian and the rest. Huge horrible hotels to cater for the Chinese tour groups who probably come all year through. Buses and cars blocking the roads all leads to scenes of polluted chaos. The problems are there 12 months a year. Overrun , is the word I would use.

From a ladies point of view. Would you consider doing this with a western partner ? Sorry, I live half half France Thailand , And all my friends who are married work together with their partners to make a better life. Two incomes are certainly better than one, and goes to having better housing, holidays, savings etc. What sort of person would give this up to lounge around all day at home ? Less money coming in so less luxuries etc ? In my opinion, women , anywhere, who have this attitude don’t make good marriage material.

KhunHeineken, had many a good night with great wine at reasonable prices in Susaday. Yes, I’m wondering where Bruno and family are, any news would be welcome. I’ll start looking myself. Last saw them two seasons ago,2016, and all was fine then for them.

roger101, hi, I’ve been a few times to Vietnam, why not try it . Lots of plus points, easier to get to than Philippines, a bit safer, much better food, delicious in fact. The Vietnamese are lovely people lots of things to do there, lots of gorgeous places to visit. You could do a trip there if you haven’t been, see what you think. I’ve heard that rent is cheaper than here, and food is definitely cheaper. Beer too ,if you drink. Look at it this way, if you didn’t like it, you could always come back to Thailand or elsewhere. Where do you live in Thailand ? Have you thought of moving to a cheaper area and wait and see what the near future brings concerning paperwork ?
Good luck.
