  1. l know this thread is about Thai-English but just want to point out the idiosyncrasies of Filipina-English.

We lived out in the country in Australia & used to go to town every month for shopping etc.

On our way home l stopped at a pub & said to my wife that l "was just going to duck in here & buy some bottles of beer"

She gave me a funny look but said nothing.

When l returned to the car she asked me "where is the duck?"

Just once l got her drunk on wine(she never drank alcohol before)& the next morning she was complaining of her "overhang".

We had an obnoxious neighbour who we called "bucket mouth" & he didn't know we called him this.

l was in the garage & he came to honour us with his presence, so my wife shouted out to me "bucket mouth is here"

    Of course he heard it!

  2. I think he's underselling it. I work in London and the number of Romanians working and living here now is huge, by the end of this year the Romanian population of UK will be 4-5 x bigger than the government predicted back when they opened the gates. The same will happen when the next batch of countries join the EU, but on an even larger scale as the new countries joining are even poorer. If we don't leave the EU we are finished as a country well and truly.

And which countries will that be?

Currently, there are NO countries that would have the slightest chance to join (except for Iceland, Switzerland and Norway, and these have no intention to do so right now). And those countries with the applicant-status have years and years ahead of them and I do not see any of them doing their homework properly. So, no new members in the foreseeable future.

Morocco has made several applications to join.

    May be others, not sure.

  3. So checks / cheques still exist?

I didn't think you could get them any more. I can't even keep track of all the ways to move money using your smartphone paypal and so on.

    Checks REALLY????

    l use them a lot.

They still exist, but for how much longer?

l've read that Sweden is going to go cashless soon.

No doubt other countries will follow.

Damn, what am l going to do with the shoeboxes full of banknotes that are under my bed?

  4. You don't get beaten up for nothing.

maybe "not for nothing" but "just for fun" certainly. Not only in Thailand, though..... even in my home country young drunksters absolutely like a "just for fun" beating of random people

If you follow the news in many countries.... it seems that violence among teens and into the twenties... is also getting worse in Europe and the U.S. and Canada etc. etc....

There are vicious beatings every day in Toronto and Vancouver, Canada every day also... and in cities in Europe and the U.S. Not sure about Australia.... I don't follow the news there...

Perhaps I'm wrong......and it only seems that way........ I hope I'm wrong..... but I think it is not just in Thailand..

    Australia too.

    Road rage is up

D!ckheads texting & talking on mobile phones while driving.

ldiots on lce looking for trouble.

ldiots attacking bus drivers on public buses.

Entitled idiots putting their feet on seats in the trains then getting belligerent when told to remove them.

Cowardly "king hits" on unsuspecting drunks. Straight to the back of the head. Several people have died because of this. lts now been made a distinct law with its own set jail time.

l despair of the human race.

    l much prefer animals.

  5. I thought there was some points of international law and national treasures/artifacts which stipulated ownership by original provenance. In America currently, the FBI is investigating an old stamp that reappeared. Some Brit inherited the stamp of the upside down (Jenny) plane. It was stolen long ago. They are investigating because it makes no difference who's hands the stamp crossed, or how innocent the attainment was. The only thing that matters is the origin. This premise is also all over international law (I thought). This diamond is from India! I am unaware that any argues its chain of custody. To me its pretty simple- Its an Indian stone.

    Was an lndian stone.

    Before that an Afghan stone.

    Before that, who knows?

    Dry your eyes, Princess.

  6. all i have to say is thank god for the misogynists, misfits and misanthropes out there with their insecurities.

after 20 years in thailand, i have come full circle.

give me a motivated western woman with her own life over another thai dependent any day.

personally i enjoy lying in bed discussing literature or world affairs with someone who can answer.

so, you keep it up and ill keep meeting women who are relieved that im not a sexpat <deleted>

So you've come to your senses and decided you preferred apples to oranges. How about a motivated Thai woman with her own life and a dependent western woman? If you like to discuss literature and world affairs in English and in bed, try an educated woman; she doesn't have to be western.

It seems so many farangs only know Thai bar girls; would you even consider a western prostitute for a wife?

lf l loved her & she gave up her past, l would marry her.

    lf she'd have me.

As long as she had flawless skin......right?

    Now you're getting it.

    Amongst other things.

Go on, ask me what other things! lol

  8. My wife always does the cleaning: dishes, house and clothing.

When she came with me to America and made some friends, they got around to telling her that we should share doing these things and it should all be equal.

I don't take her back there anymore.

    She's happy.

    I'm happy.

When l took my Filipina wife to Australia, it wasn't long before the white women got on to her about "doing things for me" that they wouldn't do for their long-suffering husbands.

"What, you pack his lunch for work? My hubbie has to pack his own"

"You wash the car when he is at work, thats his job."

"You give him sex every night? my husband should be so lucky"

    And so it went.

l never forced her to do any of this, she regarded it as her duty as l had a hard, hot, dusty job & l was bringing home the money(which l turned over to her).

l think they were terrified that if their husbands ever found out, then they would leave & get a Filipina or the white women would have to start treating their husbands right.

l used to sit, amazed, in the lunch room, listening to my workmates talking about being "on a promise" that they might get sex that night if they did the right thing by their demanding wives.

There was no point in telling them of my situation, they would never have believed me anyway. Sad.

  9. The real issue is not the economics of in or out, it's migration.

If you want to be ruled by mad Angela by all means join. She is looking for more warehouses to store her surplus immigrants. All these immigrants just made an EU economic mess much worse. Most of the immigrants are Muslims who do not integrate well. They are also masters at taking advantage of the Social Welfare system. The multiplier aspect of these people is through the roof. They will assimilate you.

Racism is a very unpleasant thing

Since when has muslim become a race?

  10. Hi,

First of all I would like to get a few terms straight. As someone mentioned Freon is a brand name of refrigerant and is like calling all pens Biros and tissues Kleenex, they are only brand names. Technically it is not a gas as during the refrigeration cycle the refrigerant is both a gas and a liquid. It can also be charged to a refrigeration unit as a gas or liquid. So the term I will use is refrigerant.

All cooling systems use a refrigerant and refrigerant can be many different types. Home fridges and smaller commercial unit are sealed units and refrigerant is added in the factory and piped welded. Therefor very rarely leak. This applies to single Ac window units.

Most AC installed in homes, etc are called split units with the compressor, a coil and a fan in the outside unit and a coil and a fan inside unit. The electronics can be in either or both units. These 2 units are joined by copper pipes. This is where the problem starts. The cutting, flaring and joining of the pipes is done by human hands, and as we all know, there is a significant variation in skills.

I had a split system in my bedroom in Australia for over 20 years and it never needed a top up. And really there is no reason that should not apply to all split units. Tools vary immensely. You need to cut the copper pipe with a good cutter and the de-bur. After that a good flare tool should be used. Some cheaper ones just squeeze the pipe and can be over squashed by the operator. I used a concentric roller type which rolled the pipe to a flare the had a cut out if I tried to put too much pressure. The joint should be made very carefully and a small amount refrigerant oil added both sides of the flare to help seal and prevent dragging of the copper pipe on the flare nut side.

As I mentioned there are many different types of refrigerants used. I have heard of ammonia being used and also LPG but obvious dangers in the latter. The main ones I used in Australia was R22, R410a, R407c and R134?( this mainly used in cars). R22 is being phased out due to its ozone depleting characteristics and being replace by mainly R410a in domestic units. This in itself causes more problems. R410a is a mixture of refrigerants and operates at higher pressures than the old common R22. It also has a smaller molecules size so can leak easier. More specialized tools and care needed in installation of units with this refrigerant. As well as the tools mentioned I also used torque wrench on the joints to prevents leaks and damage to the copper pipe. I then pressure tested the joints with nitrogen and 1.5x normal operation pressure.

If an R22 units leaks it can be topped up. R410a is a mixture of 2 refrigerants and if the unit leaks, especially during non operation the unit, 1 refrigerant can leak more then the other. It is recommended that if one of these units leak the remaining refrigerant is reclaimed and a new lot added.

Big cooling units control the amount of refrigerant flow by a Tx valve. These don't generally exist in a home unit to save on complexity and thus costs. So these units are "critically charged" with the correct amount of refrigerant for and installation of about 1 to 4 meters of piping. If longer piping is run extra refrigerant is required as per the manual. A unit can be overcharged with too much refrigerant and causes pressure problems.

I have raved a bit but how do you tell if not enough refrigerant? First is to check that the compressor in the outdoor unit is running when you try to cool the room. The fan should also be running. If they are both running look at the pipes coming from the outdoor unit. If the smaller one is icing up you are low on refrigerant. If not icing up feel with your hand and should be cold. If not cold, little or no refrigerant. Another things is that refrigerant oil travels around the system with the refrigerant. So if there is a leak oil leaks too. You can unwrap the insulation of each of the connection and see if you can spot oil.

    Hope this helps.

    Bravo, excellent post.

l worked on a minesite in Australia & my forté was air conditioning of heavy mobile equipment.

Only thing l could add was that after draining the Nitrogen & vacuuming the system, l would immerse the gas container in very hot water(especially in winter) while the hoses were connected then open the valve wide, so that the gas was sucked into the system very rapidly.

lmmediately start the engine & get the A/C working to assist in drawing in the gas.

And you are correct as to the cooling properties of LPG gas, but it is very dangerous & illegal to use.

l have a LandCruiser at home that uses R12 refrigerant. Thankfully has never leaked as if it ever does, l will have to convert the system, by law, to run on R134 which is no-where near as efficient.

A pleasure to read your post.

    Cheers.

  11. You know I have been enjoying one of my favorite SongKrans to date. I know that there are many more so called experts on this forum wanting to reform the holiday. I have only lived here for 11 years I am a newbie. I am tired of listening to expats complain about their adopted country. I know this country is not perfect and neither am I. If you do not like Thailand then get the hell out. You do not need to complain anymore about how terrible it is here. Go back to Manchester ,or Melbourne , or Toronto , or New York City. Shit happens everywhere. For me I this that Songkran is a beautiful and enjoyable holiday. It is no different then Christmas or the 4th of July. People want to have fun and sometimes bad things happen. To all the haters, the airport is waiting

    My thoughts exactly,

lf you don't like it, stop complaining & bloody well LEAVE.

  12. Once again this confirms my argument that the Songkran festival of today can cause aggression and with conflicts arising. Very different to the tradition of sprinkling water on people than firing and drenching people. Brink back the old ways.

Oh yes the good old days when the people were not drenched.

I doubt very much if this incident was caused by the attacker getting a little wet. It is only the farangs who can't seem to cope with a little bit of water on a hot day in a tropical country. How do they cope during the wet season?

Let's have a look at the good old days when you were just sprikled gently with a drop or two shall we. Or is that just a myth you have read? Ask an older Thai, they will tell you.

Nice old photos -- looks like they're having fun.

I couldn't help but notice that nobody in any of the pictures is fat or even overweight. Taken before the Thai love for fried and processed food took hold here (like pretty much everywhere).

l like the old Dodge 4x4(30 cwt, l think).
