The Government of Thailand is set to introduce a bill aimed at enhancing the quality of life and providing welfare protection for the country’s 20 million informal workers, including Internet influencers and farmers who currently lack access to a social safety net. Labour Ministry spokesperson Phumiphat Mueanchan announced that the ministry is advancing the bill to the Cabinet for approval before it proceeds to Parliament. This new legislation seeks to encompass independent workers such as farmers, freelancers, vendors, artists, actors, YouTubers, influencers, and food delivery riders within a formal social welfare scheme. These groups now represent a significant portion of the workforce, yet are not formally recognised under current labour laws. Phumiphat highlighted that, due to this lack of formal recognition, these workers are not entitled to universal state health insurance or other basic labour rights. “The bill aims to provide social security coverage, ensure workplace safety, and protect the rights of these non-formal workers.” Moreover, the bill would enable the registration of non-formal workers, allowing the government to devise more precise policies, design benefits, and allocate appropriate budgets based on the submitted information. Labour Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn recently endorsed the Kru Kor project, which aims to train 75,249 local community leaders and volunteers nationwide. This initiative is intended to disseminate information about the bill to informal workers, ensuring they register promptly once the new law is enacted, reported Bangkok Post. A simple trick reveals how to check if a strange number calling you is from a call centre scam. Just follow two easy steps to know immediately if it’s a scammer. Call centre scams have become a widespread issue in Thailand, affecting people of all ages, professions, and backgrounds. Many individuals have become wary and have started avoiding answering calls from unfamiliar numbers. The cybercriminals behind these scams often target a wide range of victims, not just older people. According to a post by the Facebook page Kan Jom Phalang, there is a straightforward method to filter out suspicious phone numbers and determine if they are from call centre scammers or real people. One easy method is to simply hang up the call. If the call is from a regular person, you should be able to call back. However, if it is from a call centre scam, you won’t be able to return the call. The reason you cannot call back is that scammers use special equipment to make their calls, rather than traditional telephones. Additionally, some call centre scammers impersonate officials using fake Facebook or LINE accounts to make video calls, which are also fraudulent. The Facebook post advised… “Just hang up and try calling back. If it’s a legitimate call, you’ll be able to reconnect. If not, it’s likely a scam.” By following these simple steps, people can protect themselves from falling victim to these fraudulent schemes. It’s important to stay vigilant and cautious, especially when dealing with unknown numbers, reported Sanook. Bangkok sees drop in scam-related incidents for British tourists File photo for reference only In a relief for British holidaymakers heading to Bangkok, the city is no longer the number one international destination for tourist scams. In a relief for British holidaymakers heading to Bangkok, the city is no longer the number one international destination for tourist scams. Bangkok has dropped from the first spot to the sixth spot in the global list of cities with the highest likelihood of scams or thefts. The antivirus firm, McAfee, updated the list, showing the cities with the highest instances of tourists being cheated out of their money. The throne, previously held by Bangkok, has now been claimed by a popular Spanish resort. Warning for tourists heading to Spain's sunny beaches! Benidorm, a well-loved resort in Costa Blanca, has sadly earned the title of being the top destination for tourist scams worldwide. This has disturbingly tarnished the holiday image of Benidorm, now recognized as the most dangerous place for tourists to lose their hard-earned money to tricky con men. According to the list, cities such as New York, Dublin, and Berlin also pose a high risk for scams to holiday goers. They rank alongside a risky beach destination which tops the list. Data from McAfee shows that British tourists were swindled out of an alarming £12 million due to holiday scams in 2023. As such, tourists are urged to use caution when choosing holiday providers, particularly when visiting the top 10 riskiest destinations listed. Within these spots, including popular vacation areas, tourists frequently fall victim to money-stealing scams. Notably, Benidorm, Spain, visited by a significant number of Brits yearly, emerges as the top location where fraudsters cause the most damage. Costa Blanca is noted for a rise in deceptive websites and ads with scam offerings to unsuspecting targets. Following Benidorm, Berlin takes the second place and Ibiza, the third place. Meanwhile, Bangkok drops from first to sixth place in this year's ranking, according to the Daily Mirror. Vonny Gamot, McAfee’s EMEA head, urged holidaymakers to stay vigilant, stating, “Tourists should adopt an active approach to ensure the security, privacy, and online identity ahead of the peak summer holiday season. When a deal seems incredible, it’s best to refrain from clicking. Instead, go straight to the source and book with trusted companies.” Visitors are also recommended not to rely solely on the professional appearance of businesses and their social media accounts. Distrusting reviews is also advised as certain sites manipulate their ratings by deleting negative feedback. Using third-party websites like Trustpilot to gauge a website's credibility is suggested. The top 10 riskiest places to vacation are: 1. Benidorm, Spain. 2. Berlin, Germany. 3. Ibiza, Balearic Islands. 4. Valletta, Malta. 5. Albufeira, Portugal. 6. Bangkok, Thailand. 7. Maldives, South Asia. 8. Dubai, UAE. 9. New York, USA. 10. Dublin, Ireland. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of clear guidelines and systematic measures to ensure public safety. The Ministry of Industry and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment are implementing immediate solutions, including compensation, preventing rainwater from spreading contaminants, proper waste disposal, and environmental rehabilitation. They are also drafting measures to propose the designation of pollution control zones for areas affected by illegal waste dumping, in line with the 1992 Environmental Quality Promotion Act. Additionally, the ministries, local governments, and industry partners are launching the "Unified Industry Initiative" to provide immediate relief to affected residents. This includes distributing survival kits and face masks, offering health check-ups, supporting waste management experts, and providing machinery and personnel for area rehabilitation. Enormous quantities of mushrooms emerged from a termite mound close to a monk's dwelling, catching the eye of many fascinated locals. Two elderly women aim to cook these mushrooms as a gift to the local monks. These mushrooms, locally called "hed plouk", appeared on a mound behind the residence of a monk named Sumet Sumetho at the Saen Suk Temple located in Ban Don Saen Suk, in the Khon Buri district of Nakhon Ratchasima province. The unusual sight of hundreds of mushrooms flourishing in such large quantities attracted considerable attention from locals. While the growth of mushrooms on termite mounds isn't unusual, the vastness and size of this batch make it an extraordinary occurrence. These mushrooms are described as unusually large and full, drawing increased interest from the community. Yesterday, on August 8, Sumet Sumetho, who lives in the aforementioned dwelling, invited two elderly women from the local area, Arun, who is 77, and Rian, who is 72. His suggestion was to harvest the mushrooms for food to prevent wastage. Today the mushrooms reached full maturity, with a few new ones sprouting. Sumet advised the women to ensure future growth by leaving the roots unharmed. Arun and Rian gathered all the mushrooms with care, following the monk's guidance, and accounted for a total of 118 mushrooms. Arun and Rian plan to wash and store the mushrooms and cook them into a dish the following morning. They want to donate this meal to the monks at Saen Suk Temple as part of their almsgiving, thus fulfilling a meritorious act. Arun and Rian attribute this unusual mushroom growth, which has attracted much attention, including media coverage, to a higher power. They infer this occurrence symbolises their village Don Saen Suk's and the temple Saen Suk's fertility. They speculate it could act as a divine call for more people to contribute to the temple's maintenance and upgrade. Their gesture of offering mushrooms to the monks reflects a deeper spiritual connection to their faith and their community. This act serves not only as a practical use of natural resources, but as a significant show of their religious devotion and community spirit. Ex-Boxer Arrested by Police for Promoting Online Gambling File photo for reference only A famous retired boxer was arrested by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) for promoting online gambling sites. A famous retired boxer was arrested by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) for promoting online gambling sites. Thawon (last name withheld), was apprehended yesterday, August 8, and confessed to getting 2,500 baht for each promotional post. Working alongside the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD), the CIB took action against Thawon, who jointly announced, advertised, or enticed others to gamble online without authorization. Thawon's Facebook page, which has over 330,000 followers, was found to have posts featuring boxing match schedules and links to online gambling sites. This move was perceived as encouraging the public to participate in illegal gambling. Preliminary inquiries showed that Thawon owned the Facebook page and that he was paid 2,500 baht for each post by the owners of the online gambling sites. During questioning by TCSD officers, Thawon acknowledged his involvement in the operation. He stated, “I'm the owner of the Facebook page in question, and the online gambling site owners paid me to place ads on my page. They compensated me with 2,500 baht per post.” After Thawon's admission, TCSD officers will collect more evidence to file charges and commence legal proceedings against him and the owners of the online gambling sites. This arrest comes as part of a broader effort by the CCIB to curb the growing trend of illegal online gambling activities. The negative societal impact of these activities, particularly on impressionable young people, is a prime concern. CCIB officers will continue to keep an eye on social media platforms for evidence of illegal activities. Strict punishments await individuals found guilty under law. The public is strongly advised against participating in or promoting online gambling to avoid legal consequences and to help maintain a safe online space. Thailand anticipates 9.39 billion baht from Mother's Day tourism File photo for reference only The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) anticipates revenue from domestic travel to reach 9.39 billion baht during the Mother's Day holiday this year. The expected income from an estimated 2.6 million trips is slightly below the 9.58 billion baht generated during the two consecutive extended holidays in July. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1335105-thailand-anticipates-939-billion-baht-from-mothers-day-tourism/ -
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) anticipates revenue from domestic travel to reach 9.39 billion baht during the Mother's Day holiday this year. The expected income from an estimated 2.6 million trips is slightly below the 9.58 billion baht generated during the two consecutive extended holidays in July. TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool attributes the lower forecast for the Mother's Day weekend to several factors. These include high household debts, the living costs that have made people careful about leisure spending, and some travelers who have already spent their travel budgets in the previous month. Individuals with high purchasing power might choose to travel abroad to celebrate with their mothers rather than staying within Thailand, added Thapanee. She said, "Some tourists, with attractive tour packages from neighboring countries at an affordable rate of only 10,000 baht, have decided to treat their mothers with an international trip." Countries likely to benefit from these foreign trips include Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, and China as they provide visa exemptions for Thai travelers. The long weekend sees a predicted average hotel occupancy rate of 68% nationwide, with the central region and Bangkok expected to record the highest occupancy rates at 73% and 72%, respectively. The central region is also likely to see the maximum visitors with approximately 672,740 trips, followed by the northeast with 485,690 and the eastern region with 463,640 trips. In terms of revenue generation, Bangkok leads the pack with a forecast of 2.32 billion baht, trailed by the eastern region with 1.98 billion and the south with 1.5 billion baht. Thapanee also mentioned that the predictions fall in line with the Tourism Council of Thailand’s estimates which predicted about 30% of local travelers staying within their provinces, while only 14% will undertake short trips in other provinces. The TAT is hosting various events outside Bangkok in a bid to attract more tourists. These events include the Amazing Food Festival 2024 in Prachuap Khiri Khan and the Amazing Beach Life Festival in Songkhla. The purpose of these events is to stimulate tourism in lesser-visited areas, provide unique experiences, and boost the local economies. A new political group called "The People's Party" was launched today by members of the now-disbanded Move Forward Party (MFP). The new party leader is Natthaphong “Teng” Ruengpanyawut, who was the Deputy Secretary-General for the MFP. The MFP was disbanded by the Constitutional Court on August 7 due to claims that the party threatened the monarchy and democracy in its promotion to change Section 112 of the Criminal Code, also known as the lèse-majesté law. After the disbanding, 11 key figures, including former party leader Pita Limjaroenrat and the former Secretary-General Chaithawat Tulathon, were prohibited from forming a new political party, joining any party leadership, or becoming part of a founding team. Nevertheless, the prohibited members, mainly Pita and Chaithawat, remain committed to helping the new political party, which is set to include the remaining 143 MFP members. Today, August 9, the former MFP members held a press conference at the Thai Summit building to officially announce the name of their new party. The term "People's Party" is not new to Thai politics. It was previously used during the 1988 General Election under the leadership of Chaloemphan Siwikrom, who once worked for the Democrat Party. The People's Party secured 19 seats in Parliament before its leader announced its dissolution in 1989 to merge with the Ruam Thai Party. New party leader Natthaphong, 37, was chosen due to his coordinating skills and good nature. The executive management team members of the party include: Sarayut Jailak – Secretary-General Chutima Kotchaphan – Treasurer Nattawut Buaprathum – Member Register Phicharn Chaowapatanawong – Executive Committee Member It was expected that Sirikunya Tansakun, the ex Deputy Leader of the MFP, would become the new party leader, but she clarified she had no intention of doing so. Natthaphong described the new party’s mission, which is to empower all Thai citizens. The logo, an orange inverted pyramid combined with three hexagons, symbolises the ideals of the Khana Ratsadon: The supreme power belongs to the majority of Thai people, and encompasses the values of freedom, equality and fraternity. The target release date for the new party is 2027, and their primary goal is to win the election and create a one-party government. To achieve this, Natthaphong has a lot of work to do, including reorganising the party, finding additional financial backers, and developing appealing campaigns. The People’s Party will start accepting new members at the Stadium One building near National Stadium BTS Station on August 10. Yala witnessed a tragic incident when two teenagers on a motorcycle shot at another group of youths, resulting in one fatality and one severe injury. The police have been struggling to control frequent gang-related violence in the area. Yala City Police Station yesterday, August 8, received a report of a shooting at the entrance of Banogo Tuen Ngor Alley in Moo 1, Sateng Nok subdistrict, Mueang Yala district. Two individuals were injured in the incident. Upon receiving the report, Police Lieutenant Awirut Siripong and a team of officers immediately went to the scene. At the location, police officers from the Kamphong Nibong Municipality cordoned off the area. Bloodstains were found on the ground, and a red Scoopy-i motorcycle belonging to the injured was on the road. The injured individuals were identified as 16 year old Fa-is Dole, from Moo 4, Budi Subdistrict, and 17 year old Asmi Kahlong. Rescue workers from the Mae Kor Niao Yala Foundation had already transported them to Yala Central Hospital. Fa-is Dole succumbed to his injuries later. Investigations revealed that Fa-is (the deceased), owner of the motorcycle, was riding with Asmi and 17 year old Anaph Benma, who was driving. Fa-is was seated in the middle while Asmi was at the back. Two assailants on another motorcycle approached them and fired a handgun, hitting Fa-is fatally and severely injuring Asmi. Anaph, the driver, escaped unscathed but was in shock. Gang dispute Officers have taken Anaph for questioning at the Yala City Police Station. Initial findings suggest that the shooting stemmed from a dispute between local youth gangs. The police are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause and apprehend the culprits responsible for the death and injury. Reports indicate that the police in the Mueang Yala district have been unable to control the recurrent violence caused by various youth gangs. These groups often engage in fights and retaliatory attacks, leading to multiple injuries and fatalities. Despite numerous incidents, law enforcement has struggled to arrest the perpetrators or prevent these violent acts. Additionally, the police have not provided clear updates or held press conferences to inform the public and the victims’ families about the progress of the cases, reported KhaoSod. The ongoing gang-related violence in Yala continues to be a significant concern for residents and officials alike. The community is calling for more effective measures to ensure safety and bring justice to those affected by these tragic events. A shocking car crash occurred in Ratchaburi when two young women swerved to avoid a dog, causing their vehicle to crash into a tree and burst into flames. The incident, today, August 9, left the car destroyed. At 3am, Pak Tho Police Station in Ratchaburi received a report about a car fire on Phetkasem Road, heading southward in Moo 5, Pa Kai Sub-district, Pak Tho District, Ratchaburi province. The police, including the local fire brigade and rescue teams, were promptly informed and rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, they found a Honda Civic, the colour and registration of which remain unknown, engulfed in flames after colliding with a tree on the left side of the road. The car had flipped over with its wheels facing upwards. Nearby, two injured women were discovered and identified as 20 year old Wasana, the driver, and 19 year old Yosita, the passenger. The rescue team provided first aid and transported both women to Pak Tho Hospital. According to initial statements from two Good Samaritans, they had been driving home from Ratchaburi Market when the incident occurred. The witnesses, who were driving at approximately 80 kilometres per hour (km/h) in the right lane, noticed the Honda Civic overtaking them on the right before swerving into the left lane. They assumed the car was turning into an alley. As they approached the accident scene, they saw the Honda Civic lose control and crash into the tree, with sparks beginning to ignite a fire. The witnesses quickly stopped to help, managing to pull the driver and passenger from the wreckage. They confirmed that only two people were in the car, and the injured women corroborated this, explaining that they had swerved to avoid a dog, leading to the loss of control. The fire soon engulfed the entire vehicle, reducing it to a mere shell. Fortunately, there was no damage to nearby houses or public property. Police have since contacted the relatives of the injured women to proceed with further actions. A witness recounted the accident. “We were driving back from the market when the road was clear. Suddenly, the Honda Civic sped past us and swerved into the left lane. Moments later, we saw it crash into a tree and catch fire. “We managed to pull the two women out just in time. They told us they were trying to avoid a dog, which caused the accident.” Police continue to investigate the accident, ensuring that all details are accurately recorded and the scene is thoroughly examined. The prompt response and bravery of the Good Samaritans likely prevented a more tragic outcome, highlighting the importance of quick thinking and community support in emergencies. The family of a Thai woman electrocuted to death in a Phuket hotel is seeking justice after they accused the hotel and police of attempting to cover up the cause of her death to avoid taking responsibility. The 26 year old woman, Kanokwan “Nam” Intachak, worked as an assistant chef at a well-known hotel in Phuket and died while working on April 21. A witness revealed that Nam screamed, fell onto her back, struck her head on a table, and lost consciousness. Her family suspected that Nam was electrocuted as there were several electrical devices in the area where she was working. Thalang Police Station investigated the scene and did not find any traces of physical assault or electrocution. They transferred Nam’s body to Vachira Phuket Hospital for an autopsy. The police then reported on April 22 that Nam had died from a congenital condition, atherosclerosis. The hotel offered Nam’s family 68,000 baht, and her colleagues contributed an additional 12,100 baht. However, her father, unconvinced by the police report, refused to accept the money. Amarin TV later reported that the hotel presented a counterfeit autopsy report to the family, and police officers were suspected of being involved in this action. According to media reports, the family only received the official autopsy result from the hospital at the end of last month, which clearly showed that Nam died by electrocution. Nam’s father and other family members decided to take Nam’s body in a coffin from their home province of Nakhon Si Thammarat to the hotel in Phuket. They insisted on remaining outside the hotel until the management team took appropriate responsibility and compensated the family for their loss.
