BANGKOK (NNT) - The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is taking a sustainable approach to tourism by promoting low-carbon travel routes along Bangkok’s historic Phadung Krung Kasem Canal. The goal is to encourage tourists to engage in environmentally responsible tourism behaviors that minimize their carbon footprints. TAT, in collaboration with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), organized a familiarisation trip on August 19, to showcase an enjoyable and eco-conscious way for tourists to explore local attractions and participate in activities along the Phadung Krung Kasem Canal. The event was attended by Japanese media, bloggers, and representatives from Destination Management Companies (DMCs). The journey starts with an electric boat cruise from Hua Lamphong Station Pier to the historic Wat Thewarat Kunchon Worawihan temple. This temple, which dates back to the Ayutthaya period, holds significance as a royal temple since King Rama IV’s reign and is well-known for its mural paintings and famous Buddha images. Passengers continued their journey to Nakhon Sawan Pier, where they visited the century-old Nang Loeng Market, one of Thailand’s earliest inland markets. In addition to enjoying street cuisine, visitors to Ban Narasin participated in a Khon costume embroidery session. This workshop focuses on the ancient Khon theatrical company during the reign of King Rama VI. The journey then transformed into a walking tour and caf? exploration along Nang Loeng and Nakhon Sawan Road. Notable stops included Mamueng Caf?, Bangkok 1899 House, Na Caf?, Nang Loeng Art, and Buddha & Pals Caf? & Jazz. The journey concluded at the Thai Railway Museum, which caters to railroad enthusiasts and is located near MRT Hua Lumphong. For those interested in taking this eco-friendly journey along the canal, the BMA electric boat operates daily and is free of charge. It runs every 20 minutes from 06:00-09:00 and 16:00-19:00 on weekdays. Meanwhile, the boat runs every hour from 08:00-19:00 on weekends and holidays. BANGKOK (NNT) - Four major Thai banks have made the decision to close their branches in Laos, citing stricter regulations and decreased business activities as the primary reasons for their withdrawal. The banks include Thai Military Bank, Bank of Ayudhya, CIMB Thai Bank, and Bangkok Bank. The group said tighter regulations imposed by the Lao authorities, particularly in areas such as lending and foreign exchange management, have hampered the ease of conducting business in the country. Additionally, over the past three years, foreign commercial banks were required to raise their minimum registered capital from 100 billion kip to 300 billion kip per branch, resulting in elevated operating costs. The decline in business activity, especially in cross-border trade and investments between Thailand and Laos, has further contributed to the decision to close these branches. Many Thai corporations, which had been the primary client base for these banks, have discontinued their operations in Laos. The four Thai banks have reassessed their business strategies and opted to shut down branches that were not meeting targeted returns, in an effort to manage expenses. While concerns about inflation and the depreciation of the Lao kip have been acknowledged, these issues have taken a back seat compared to the perceived regulatory risks and the dwindling business activities. However, other major Thai banks such as Bangkok Bank, Krungsri (Bank of Ayudhya), Krungthai Bank, Siam Commercial Bank, and Kasikornbank continue to operate in Laos. KBank has identified business opportunities in neighboring countries, particularly in relation to China’s investments in infrastructure projects like the China-Laos railway. The bank remains focused on serving large Thai corporations and mid-sized enterprises in Laos, with a portfolio that includes local currency fund transfers to facilitate cross-border trade and mitigate foreign exchange risks. A representative of the owner of the controversial “Pang Cha” trademark has said that the owner, Lukkaithong Thai Royal Restaurant, does not intend to claim compensation from those who use the registered trademark, but wants them to stop using it immediately. The representative, called Ann, told a TV talk show that the restaurant originally wanted to register “Pang Cha The Best Thai Tea” as its trademark, but the Department of Intellectual Property demanded that the words “The Best Thai Tea” be deleted, because they are in common use and cannot be registered “so we were granted the “Pang Cha” trademark”. She also said that the notices, which were sent to some restaurants that use the same trademark by the lawyer, were intended to stop them from using the trademark, but not to claim compensation as the names of their restaurants were not specified in the notices. Former red-shirt leader Nattawut Saikuar quit the Pheu Thai Party last week in protest against its move to form a coalition government with military-backed parties linked with the 2014 coup. The politician said that he opposed Pheu Thai’s decision to “share power with the military” and “cannot go along with the party”. Nattawut, 48, previously served as director of the Pheu Thai Family – a post apparently created especially for him after he rejoined the party in June last year. He also helped with Pheu Thai’s campaign for the May 14 election. Thai society is aging fast. The percentage of the population aged 60 and above was projected to be 20.4 per cent in 2020 and 38.3 per cent in 2050, according to the UN ESCAP’s demographic changes report for Asia and the Pacific. While Thailand has multiple social insurance and social assistance schemes to support the elderly, the old-age income provided by these schemes is inadequate for many groups of the population. The different schemes are in theory targeted at different groups or sectors of the population. The Old Age Allowance (OAA) provides a basic pension for all Thai citizens aged 60 years or older with monthly handouts between 600-1,000 baht, depending on their age. With the demand for imported goods in the US and EU decreasing, many Vietnamese companies are looking to the Thai market for their export products this year. According to Mr. Puripan Bunnag, senior vice president of the Convention and Exhibition Department of Thailand, in the first half of this year, about 35,000 people from Vietnam visited Thai exhibitions and fairs to look for opportunities to sell their products, an increase of between 20% and 30% year- on-year.
