Air Japan today announced plans to target Thai passengers by offering a direct flight from Bangkok to Tokyo next year. The president of Air Japan, Minekuji Hideki, revealed to the media that Air Japan is a new low-cost airline under ANA Holdings, which will provide the airline’s first flight from Narita International Airport in Tokyo to Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok, Thailand. The airline president disclosed that the first flight will take off on February 10, 2024. The Japanese airline plans to operate the flight with a Boeing 784-9, which can serve 324 passengers. The flight will be available only in economy class. According to Minekuji, the route will be available six times a week in the initial stage of the operation. The airline plans to add one more flight a week within the year. Furthermore, the airline also considered offering direct flights from Bangkok to the Kansai region and from other countries in Southeast Asia to Japan within the first three years of operation. Minekuji anticipates that 70% of passengers would be Thais and predicted that 30% would likely be female Japanese passengers. He added that Japanese women loved travelling in Thailand. The man, Palm, tracked his 40 year old wife, Bee (pseudonym), to the residence of her brother Wirat and shot him with a .22 calibre gun, after his wife announced her decision to end their relationship, signalling a serious case of domestic violence. Bee disclosed that Palm had followed her to her brother’s house and immediately attacked her. When her brother intervened to protect her, Palm shot him several times, leaving a bullet lodged in his chest. Post the attack, Palm discarded his weapon and fled the scene on a motorcycle. Bee believes that Palm came to harm her, as he had previously threatened to kill her and her family if she ever decided to end their relationship. Wirat’s daughter-in-law, Lao, revealed that before the incident, she and her father-in-law had been outside their house, drinking beer. Upon Palm’s arrival, he fired two rounds into the air before turning the gun on Bee. When Wirat attempted to intervene, Palm fired multiple bullets at him, resulting in a total of six shots being fired. After the incident, Palm discarded his weapon and fled the scene on a motorcycle. Thai man faces charges after Chalong Police checkpoint cash claim goes viral Photo courtesy of Phuket News A TikTok post accusing Chalong Traffic Police officers in Thailand of stopping motorists at a checkpoint for monetary gain has led to a man being charged with criminal defamation. A TikTok post accusing Chalong Traffic Police officers in Thailand of stopping motorists at a checkpoint for monetary gain has led to a man being charged with criminal defamation. The unnamed man uploaded a video that showed officers from the Traffic Police Division of the Royal Thai Police stopping motorcyclists at a checkpoint. The accompanying note in Thai read, “Chalong Police take everything,” followed by “Don’t care about anyone’s children.” The post garnered over 150 hearts and was shared at least dozens of times. In Thailand, defamation is not just the subject of a civil suit but is also considered a criminal offence. According to Section 326 of the Thai Criminal Code, defamation is defined as the act of imputing anything about another person to a third person in a manner likely to impair the person’s reputation or place the person in contempt or hatred by others. Despite the man’s self-presentation at the Chalong Police Station and his expression of remorse for his reckless action, the Chalong Police are proceeding with the charge. They maintain they were carrying out their duties correctly at the time of the video recording. The man acknowledged the charge against him, reported Phuket News. A resident named Anon, also known as Kee, was surprised to receive an unusually high electricity bill. Concerned about this, they contacted the Thai Electricity Authority to investigate the matter. The investigation uncovered a shocking revelation – Anon’s neighbour had been stealing electricity by connecting their house directly to Anon’s electric meter. This unauthorized connection led to a spike in Anon’s electricity bill. At 1pm today, Anon explained to an online news outlet that a neighbour had connected a line directly under the meter and routed the electricity into their house, inflating Anon’s electricity bill. Anon, who hadn’t been home often due to staying at another house, was perplexed as the usual bill was around 1,500 baht. However, during the first month of absence, the bill rose to between 2,500 to 3,000 baht. Anon initially attributed this to the air conditioner, but by the third and fourth months, despite reducing its use, the bill remained at around 2,500 baht. After inviting the Electricity Authority to inspect the meter, the electricity theft truth was revealed – the neighbour had secretly tapped into Anon’s electricity. Anon also requested the Electricity Authority to review the neighbour’s electricity usage records and discovered that their usual bill was between 6,000 to 7,000 baht. When confronted, the neighbour admitted to the act but claimed it was a misunderstanding, believing it was their own meter. The Department of Medical Sciences (DMS) and the National Health Security Office (NHSO) of Thailand announced a new initiative offering free screening for newborns to detect 24 rare medical conditions. This proactive move is part of a wider strategy designed to bolster the health of the nation’s children. This comes amidst an ongoing decline in the birth rate, with a current average of 1.4 births per woman, leading to an ageing population. DMS director-general, Supakit Sirilak, highlighted the importance of the initiative in keeping Thailand’s median age from rising further. The free screenings are expected to serve as an incentive for women to have more children by providing early detection of foetal abnormalities and genetic conditions. This is particularly relevant for those residing in remote areas of the country. Data from the Birth Defects Association (Thailand) shows that around 70 out of every 500,000 children born annually in Thailand have a rare, potentially life-threatening condition. The majority of these cases occur in rural areas, often due to close familial relations, as stated by the association’s president, Pornswan Wasant. NHSO secretary-general, Dr Jadet Thammathataree, reassured that the cost of treating these 24 conditions, including patient transfers to hospitals with the necessary expertise, will be covered by the NHSO. The Thai government has launched an online vehicle registration service, providing a more convenient and time-saving option for the public. This move aligns with the government’s digital transformation policy, which aims to facilitate access to public services. As a result, citizens can now book a single number plate for each vehicle. Ratchada Thanadirek, Deputy Government Spokesperson, highlighted that this initiative is part of the government’s broader endeavour to promote digital transformation in public sector organisations. The policy, led by former Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, focuses on digitalisation to streamline processes and enhance service delivery. Several public sector organisations have already embraced this change, implementing online services to improve citizen satisfaction. The Department of Land Transport is one such entity that has shifted its services online in line with the government’s digital policy. It has developed an online system to reserve vehicle registration numbers on the website https://reserve.dlt.go.th/reserve/. The system requires identity verification through the ThaID application before booking a vehicle registration number, ensuring compliance with the Personal Data Protection Act, BE 2562 (2019), and preventing impersonation. Royal Thai Police yesterday arrested a Nigerian man and 13 Thais for operating a covert romance scam. The scam operation managed to deceive hundreds of victims across Thailand out of over 800 million baht in the past four years. The Commissioner of the Crime Suppression Division (CSD), Montri Tatekhan, revealed the arrest details to the public today. Montri explained that the victims filed a complaint against a romance scam gang at the beginning of 2022. The victims revealed to officers that the scammers used profiles of attractive foreign women to approach them on social media. The scammers informed them that they were American soldiers performing duties in Syria. After gaining the trust of the victims, they would express their desire to come to Thailand to see the victims. However, before their journeys, they would inform the victim that they sent gifts or some parcels into Bangkok via the airports. Then, they would lure the victims into paying taxes or other relevant expenses for them in advance and they would return it when they met each other. A group of Thai scammers then contacted the victims pretending to be airport authorities and demanded money for the alleged parcel-receiving process. After getting the amount they wanted, the scammer would disappear and block all the contact channels with the victims. The police conducted a further investigation until they managed to identify the gang leader, 45 year old Ezeneche Uzochukwu Jerome. Jerome had been previously charged with a love scam in 2018 but managed to re-engage in the illicit operation. For years, the residents of the Ban Thammarat community in Prachuap Khiri Khan have been tormented by the foul odour emitted by the wastewater from a local rubber factory. Despite their pleas for regular inspections and serious action towards wastewater management, the issue remains unresolved, forcing some to relocate. The community, located in Area 5, has long complained about the factory, which purchases rubber waste and discharges untreated wastewater onto personal land. The stench has permeated the area, affecting their daily lives. Several months ago, concerned authorities inspected the factory following complaints lodged at the Justice Centre. The factory was then ordered to construct a wastewater treatment pond for the rubber waste. However, months later, the residents are still grappling with the persistent stench from poor wastewater management. One resident, Sawangjit Kamlun, also known as Teacher Piek, shared her ordeal of residing near the factory while caring for a bedridden patient. Despite lodging several complaints, the issue has only been temporarily resolved. The smell returns every time the factory cleans up before an inspection. Sawangjit and her neighbours understand the thriving business of purchasing rubber waste but implore the factory owner to manage the wastewater effectively to prevent the stench. The problem has become unbearable, leading some community residents to move out. They urge the authorities to inspect more frequently and ensure that the factory adheres to the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with the community.
