  2. A junkie with a porn habit managed to escape arrest after secretly filming a neighbour in her bathroom. It was later discovered that the sex and drug addict secretly sold pornographic videos of his wife on social media for only 20 baht per video. A 52 year old woman named Sumalee filed a complaint at Kabin Buri Police Station in the central province of Prachin Buri yesterday, August 27. Sumalee told police that her 41 year old neighbour, Preecha Putsa-ard, secretly filmed her while she took a shower on August 21. Sumalee detailed the unsettling encounter, revealing that on August 21, while she was taking a shower, she heard an unusual noise coming from outside the bathroom. Upon completing her shower, she was informed by her son that Preecha had recorded a video of her. She reported the incident to the community leader, Chinnawat Buengboke, and later notified the police. Sumalee added that some of her underwear had also disappeared, suspecting that Preecha stole them for masturbation purposes. She added that Preecha’s behaviour was noted by residents and all of the women in the community were scared of their neighbour’s alleged perverted behaviour. The community leader and the police caught up with Preecha after the incident. According to ThaiRath, Preecha admitted to his perverted behaviour. He confessed that he was addicted to methamphetamine which fed his sexual desire. 3. The governor of Surat Thani has urged low-cost carrier Thai Smile to continue its service between BKK Suvarnabhumi and the southern province. The carrier is set to discontinue the flights from October 1, much to Witchawut Jinto’s dismay. “We want Thai Smile to reconsider its policy and keep the service to Surat Thani.” The services from Bangkok to Surat Thani have become a popular ‘work around’ for passengers trying to avoid the extortionate fares from Bangkok to Koh Samui charged by Bangkok Airways. Bangkok Airways operates the Samui Airport and has been charging high fares, monopolising the flights into the Gulf island. 5. Thai exports shrank for a 10th consecutive month in July, and by a far bigger rate than expected, as global demand remains sluggish, with the Ministry of Commerce saying it would be difficult to meet its full-year export growth target. Customs-based exports, a key driver of Thailand’s economy, contracted 6.2% in July from a year earlier, compared with analysts’ average estimated dip of 0.75% in a Reuters poll. Exports had slumped 10.8% from June. In a statement, the ministry said, “A sharp decline in global commodity prices, resulting from the conflicts in Ukraine in the preceding year, led to a significant slowdown in related export values,” adding that China had also faced a slow recovery. 9. SONGKHLA (NNT) - In a significant effort to enhance the quality of life in the southern border provinces of Thailand, the Civil Society Network hosted a workshop on August 25 at the Haad Kaew Resort in Songkhla Province. The meeting brought together representatives from various sectors, including community organizations, agricultural groups and social development networks. With over 50 participants, the discussion focused on brainstorming strategies to drive sustainable development initiatives that positively impact the lives of local residents. The workshop was presided over by Chonthan Sangpoom, Deputy Secretary-General of the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center (SBPAC), who discussed these challenges and offered his advice to representatives from different sectors. One pressing issue has been nutrition deficiency among children aged 0-7, which he said demands immediate attention. He highlighted the government’s unwavering support for policies aimed at raising the quality of life for citizens of all age groups. The ideas exchanged during the workshop will be further studied and amplified to effectively improve the quality of life for local communities. The SBPAC deputy secretary-general also unveiled a comprehensive plan for food security development in the southern border provinces from 2024 to 2027. The strategy includes a number of initiatives to assist local farmers, stimulate agricultural enterprises, increase production capacity and promote commercial agriculture. For its next phase, the SBPAC will implement strategies with a strong emphasis on empowering the community and society, beginning October 1. To achieve the most significant developmental effects, this approach requires active participation and engagement of individuals and communities. Under these plans, the SBPAC aims to integrate both community and civil society voices in decision-making processes, streamline administrative processes in project support, and work on removing regulatory barriers. Furthermore, the SBPAC intends to incorporate lessons learned from all areas of the new policy framework in order to provide a holistic solution at every stage. The main goal is to develop locally produced products that truly meet community needs. The initiative begins with the launch of the first local Halal food products, with the ambitious goal of reaching more than 2 billion Muslims worldwide. This collaborative effort is intended to resolve disparities, ensure that the outputs are in line with the genuine requirements of the community and foster long-term cooperation, development and effective problem-solving in the region. The representatives from the Southern Border provinces further shared the same sentiment with the SBPAC, stressing the importance of an approach to improve the lives of people while tackling poverty and reducing social disparities. This includes community-driven activities that tackle challenges and foster resilient communities. The collaborative efforts are expected to create a positive impact and promote sustainable improvements for people in the southern border provinces. 13. The Thai Pakdee party submitted a petition to Corrections Department director general on Monday, opposing any attempt by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to seek a Royal pardon. The party’s move was triggered by widespread reports that Thaksin, who is serving eight years in prison and who is currently being treated at the Police General Hospital in Bangkok, may seek a pardon. Anand Sakorncharoen, treasurer of Thai Pakdee, said that, the petition is based on the fact that former prime minister Thaksin has been convicted of corruption in four cases, which gravely damaged the country’s governance and reputation. “Thaksin also evaded punishment for long time by fleeing abroad, clearly showing that he does not respect the country’s justice system. “Therefore, Thaksin’s petition for a Royal pardon would “bother” the King,” Anand said. Thaksin’s petition, if granted, would be unjust and emphasise legal and social inequality in the country, he said, and would confirm the axiom that, in Thailand, prison is just for the poor. 23. Phayao civil servant denies drink-driving after flipping government vehicle A female civil servant shared a story about the Phayao accident that involved her flipping a government vehicle. She insists she was not under the influence of alcohol at the time. She explained the events of the day and stated her readiness to cooperate with any investigation. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DPM) has sent a letter to the governor of Phayao province, who is in charge of regional civil servants and has disciplinary powers, asking him to establish a committee to investigate this female civil servant. She had used a government vehicle for non-official purposes and had an accident. There was also an order to transfer her to assist at the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Centre, Zone 15, Chiang Rai. The female civil servant, who is also a special policy and planning analyst at the Phayao Provincial Office of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, revealed that the accident occurred on the night of August 16. She insisted she wasn’t drinking and driving as portrayed by social media. She took the office’s car to survey landslide problems in the area because it was raining heavily that night, which led to the unfortunate Phayao accident, reported KhaoSod.
