The UK and US embassies in Thailand co-hosted an annual pride event, to support LGBTQ+ rights and celebrate efforts on inclusion in Thai society. On the theme ‘’United in Love’’, supporters long for equality, including legalisation of same-sex marriage. As a same-sex marriage bill is yet to pass through parliament, LGBTQ+ defenders are demanding that the legalisation process be sped up, to protect the LGBTQ+ community. UK Ambassador to Thailand, Mark Gooding, spoke about UK values and his personal experience, to encourage the development of LGBTQ+ rights. ‘’As an LGBTQ+ ambassador in Bangkok, I got Civil Partnership in 2005. 10 years later, my partner and I changed the status to marriage, when the UK’s Equal Marriage Act was passed. This is important for symbolic reasons, including being treated equally in society.’’ US Ambassador to Thailand, Robert Godec, also shared US values when it comes to developing equality for the LGBTQ+ community in Thailand. ‘’Every nation is taking its journey to equality. In the United States, we have made progress in past years, but we also faced big challenges in the past. There are still certain areas where progresses are needed. What is important is that we stand shoulder to shoulder with communities in Thailand.’’ Caption: From left to right, US Ambassador to Thailand, Robert Godec, and UK Ambassador to Thailand, Mark Gooding Full Story: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/uk-and-us-advocate-development-of-lgbtq-rights-in-thailand/ -- © Copyright Thai PBS 2023-06-26 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Phuket International Airport on Friday became a hive of activity as it underwent a security drill in case of a gunman attack. A full-scale exercise of Phuket International Airport Emergency Plan (PEMEX 2023) was enacted, simulating an ‘active gunman’ scenario. The drill took place following the departure of the last domestic flight for the day and was conducted from 11pm on the second floor of the Domestic Terminal. Security exercises like this are routinely held at the airport under the ‘PEMEX’ banner primarily designed to ensure that all response agencies and organisations are well-trained and aware of the necessary procedures to tackle such emergencies. The practice session was held at a controlled time, under controlled circumstances after all passengers for the day’s final flight had exited the vicinity. It aimed at preparing personnel for a scenario involving a gunman on a rampage within the domestic terminal, The Phuket News reported. Notable figures such as Anupap Rodkwan Yodrambam, the Vice Governor of Phuket, and other distinguished guests were present to overlook the proceedings. Others in attendance included Sermphan Sirikong, Provincial Police Commander Monchai Tanode, the General Manager of Phuket International Airport, and Bancha Thanu-in, the Thalang District Chief. Surprisingly, the fire took place on the third floor of a building near the Thailand Post branch on Bangkok Road. It reportedly started around 6am yesterday and was swiftly extinguished by the responding firefighters. Fortunately, no casualties were reported as a result of the fire. However, upon later inspection of the fire site, authorities uncovered a wide range of computer equipment, reduced to wreckage by the flames. Observably, the nature of the equipment bore striking resemblances to ones recovered earlier from illegal crypto-mining operations around the country. The scene also housed heaps of spare computer accessories, including graphic cards. Interestingly, law enforcement authorities remained silent about any investigations into the blaze and the alleged illegitimate crypto-mining activity in the building. The appeal for Thai rice continues to be significant globally, with both Indonesia and Bangladesh expressing their aspirations to buy the grain through G2G or government-to-government contracts. Ronnarong Phoolpipat, head of the Foreign Trade Department, stated that the immense global demand for Thai rice is likely to boost exports to surpass 8 million tonnes this year. The department has plans to send representatives from both the public and private sectors to discuss the subject. The goal is to reinforce ties with key trading partners such as the Philippines in July, while in August, the focus will be on Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and Japan. “Growing concerns about the impact of the El Niño weather phenomenon led Indonesia to express increased demand for rice imports, worried about a shortage for domestic consumption and the need for food security,” Phoolpipat explained. “Indonesia is interested in purchasing Thai rice through G2G deals. However, the Thai government does not have a policy to sell rice via this method, preferring private sector involvement,” Phoolpipat added. Bangladesh also has expressed interest in an acquisition of rice through G2G contracts, according to Ronnarong, reported Bangkok Post. With an eye on boosting the economy, real estate developers and consultants are urging Thailand‘s new government to implement policies that promote foreign investment. They believe such measures will stimulate a more positive environment for overseas buyers in the property market, suggesting promotional efforts to increase awareness among foreign investors. Artitaya Kasemlawan, head of residential sales projects at CBRE Thailand, said… “The attractiveness of Thailand as a destination for foreign buyers is unquestionable.” The 42 year old says she is confident that if there is “confidence in both the global economy and foreign buyers’ economies, along with the presence of attractive measures,” purchasers are more likely to invest in Thai properties. Artitaya’s assertion comes in light of numerous newly-launched luxury condominiums in Bangkok’s central business district offering leasehold tenures of up to 58-59 years. In her view, extending the leasehold period for low-rise houses to 60 years could potentially spike interest among foreign investors, many of whom make such purchases for personal use. The female worker, Susita Rachakit, who sustained injuries to her face, claims she was slapped and kicked by the man after he accused her of inappropriately touching him. It has been confirmed that legal action has been initiated by the woman, with the events captured on the restaurant’s CCTV on Friday, June 23. The whole incident was relayed firsthand by the victim and her mother to the media today. The mother posted the CCTV footage on a public Facebook page dedicated to Nakhon Sawan’s community warning of danger, explaining the situation and expressing her concern over injustice. “Susita is a beer promoter and travels to different eateries where she’s requested. This particular incident took place last night during her shift at a well-known restaurant. However, we will not disclose the name of the establishment. “She came across a familiar customer who seemed pleasant and agreed to buy three bottles of beer which Susita served. All was normal, casual chats, playful banter until out of nowhere, he accused her of inappropriately touching him. He slapped her face so hard it broke her lip. “He threatened her, stating that he was a noteworthy person and that if she filed a complaint against him, she would have to face consequences. The situation was reported to the local police, and a medical inspection was done, but the police suggested we gather evidence ourselves. This man has no right and justice should be served.” By Nattapong Westwood Caption: Picture courtesy of KhaoSod Full Story: https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/crime/former-officer-accused-of-assaulting-beer-promoter-in-nakhon-sawan-restaurant -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-06-26 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. In the early hours of yesterday morning, a tragic discovery was made in the district of Wang Nuea, Lampang province. A 48 year old man’s body was found lifeless in a hut in a dense jungle near the village. His death was mysterious, sparking an urgent response from local rescue workers, police from Wang Nuea station, and on-call physicians from Wang Nuea Hospital. Upon reaching the scene in the village of Pa Hiang, Wang Nuea, the involved personnel performed a thorough check of the area. They located the deceased man identified as Kittisak, a native of the area. His body, bloated from being undiscovered for a while, showed no initial signs of assault or abuse. Information gathered revealed that Kittisak had secluded himself in the hut for four days, following the identification of his mother as a high-risk contact after she contracted Covid-19. For the protection of fellow villagers, he had chosen to isolate himself away from his home, unwittingly meeting his untimely demise in the process. “One minute we knew he was protecting the village by isolating himself, and the next thing we knew, he was gone,” expressed a local in response to the shocking news, reported in KhaoSod. According to neighbours, Chokchai was drinking alone by the canal when he suddenly toppled backwards and fell into the water, likely as a result of a severe epileptic seizure. The frantic scene was further heightened by the mourning cries of 49 year old Jirana SaudKlang, the wife of the deceased. Jirana explained how her husband suffered from epilepsy and was sitting drinking by the canal moments before the tragic event unfolded.
