Comments by a deputy leader of Thailand’s biggest political party will not make the status quo of the armed forces too happy. Picharn Chaopattanawong ceremoniously welcomed “good signs” from the military but immediately launched into criticism concerning “lack of details” regarding downsizing which his party is understood to be planning to push. He also emphasized that major reforms would require a great political will. “Over the past four years, we only heard about goals, but were never told how to get there,” he said. In a seminar held in Bangkok, officials from the Thai Government, civil society organisations, and UN agencies gathered to reinforce their efforts towards ending childhood statelessness in Thailand. The seminar was part of the UNHCR-UNICEF Joint Strategy for Addressing Childhood Statelessness and aimed to evaluate the progress made in the country, identify challenges, and explore solutions for improved collaboration among key stakeholders. Thailand has made significant strides in legislation and policy to address statelessness over the past few decades. However, Giuseppe de Vincentiis, a UNHCR Representative, acknowledged that resolving childhood statelessness in Thailand is still a work in progress. He welcomed the Royal Thai Government’s (RTG) commitment to ending childhood statelessness, and pledged UNHCR’s continued support to the government and stakeholders in building on the progress made so far. “Every child has a right to a nationality or a legal status,” said Kyungsun Kim, UNICEF Representative for Thailand. “This is a fundamental right and the first gate that enables children to enjoy other basic rights, including the right to survival, education, protection, and meaningful participation. Without a nationality or a legal status, it is extremely difficult for a child to live a quality life and secure a bright future.” The RTG has endorsed UNHCR’s #IBelong campaign to end statelessness by 2024, pledging to provide a pathway to obtaining legal status or nationality for stateless persons, including children. The government also aims to enhance access to education, social services, and protection for them. Since 2015, over 63,000 registered stateless persons have acquired Thai nationality. A food delivery rider who violated the law by riding on a pavement slapped a pedestrian in the face because the victim blocked his path. Two days ago, the victim, Kitti Panantanannon, shared a video of the moment when he was attacked on his Facebook account. In the caption, he said… “I filed a complaint at Phra Khanong Police Station. He drove a motorcycle on the pavement at a high speed and asked me, a pedestrian, why I do not give him away. He even came back to attack me. The motorcycle also did not have a registration plate.” Kitti was seen in the video walking on the pavement when the food delivery rider abruptly approaches from the opposite direction. The rider’s shoulder hit Kitti, so he stopped and stared at Kitti. Kitti decided to walk away from the rider, but the rider followed him and slapped him in the face without warning. Kitti fought back by kicking the motorcycle. Kitti later gave an interview to Channel 3 yesterday explaining that the incident occurred near Sukhumvit Soi 85 in Bangkok. The Thai government confirmed a four-month electricity discount from May to August this year. This relief measure aims to alleviate energy price hardship for users who consume no more than 300 units per month, with an additional 150 baht rebate per household in May for those using no more than 500 units. Anucha Burapachaisr, deputy presidential secretary on political affairs, stated that there had been genuine information about the 150 baht discount on next month’s electricity bill following the previous payment. The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) said it would adjust electricity bills without the discount from May 14-17. MEA Smart Life or any of the 18 MEA offices can verify updated May electricity bills. If a reduction has been made, the MEA will provide the refund in the subsequent month. Furthermore, the May 2023 electricity bills will be based on a recording from one of the days between May 14 and June 13. The Office of the Election Commission approved measures to alleviate hardship and help reduce living expenses, in response to the impact of energy prices on electricity bills, as proposed by the government. Consequently, the electricity discount will continue for four consecutive months for residential users who consume no more than 300 units per month, and there will be an additional discount of 150 baht per household for May for those consuming no more than 500 units per month. The system will apply the discount before calculating the value-added tax (VAT).
