Young people together with celebrities and influencers from eight countries joined a “Fix My Food” workshop in Bangkok, brainstorming ideas and identifying potential partners to help roll out the campaign in their respective countries. Youths and influencers lead the movement To further promote the need for healthier food environments, UNICEF is supporting the “Fix My Food” campaign led by young people to raise awareness of the need to create healthier food environments in China, Cambodia, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Mongolia, Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam. Cambodia’s first female celebrity chef, Ros Rotanak, or Chef Nak, and Miss World Vietnam 2019, Ms. Luong Thuy Linh, were also part of the co-creation workshop and launch event. Chef Nak said, “Food is much more than just what we eat” and that she believes in preserving, developing and promoting traditional Khmer cuisine. Linh explained that she joined the campaign with the hope of changing what she called “our failing food system,” adding that children and young people must have the opportunity and the right to make healthy food choices at home, in and around schools, and in their communities. Speaking at the event, 24-year-old Ricardo Valente from Timor-Leste appreciated the opportunity to make the food environment healthier and more accessible to children in Asia and the Pacific. He said, “This campaign is unique, it is designed and led by us and will be implemented by each of us, back in our own countries.” Legislating nutrition in Thailand UNICEF Regional Nutrition Adviser for East Asia and Pacific Roland Kupka joined a panel of workshop participants at the press conference. He noted that Thailand has been a regional pioneer in nutrition policy making. “Every child has the right to adequate health and nutrition, and it’s the government’s responsibility to safeguard their rights. What the government of Thailand has been able to do is to implement effective policies to that end. For instance, Thailand was one of the first countries in the region to specifically tax unhealthy food products, such as sugary beverages. Thailand is also one of the forerunners in the region with regard to implementing policies to limit the marketing of unhealthy foods to children,” said Kupka. Following this year’s general election, Kupka hopes the incoming administration will build on the sugar tax to unleash the full potential of nutrition policymaking to limit the marketing of unhealthy foods to children and implement more effective food labeling. “I hope that the new administration will recognize that the full potential of policies will only be unleashed if we’re able to implement them together. So therefore, building on the sugar tax, I very much hope that the currently debated policy on limiting the marketing of harmful foods to children will be implemented with full force,” he added. Thai businesses and schools step up Suthasiny Sudprasert, co-founder and co-CEO of Thai sustainable food startup Happy Grocers, served as master of ceremonies for the workshop. She emphasized the responsibility borne by businesses in fostering a healthy food system. “I believe that, as a business,” she stated, “it is our responsibility to be able to be transparent with our consumers […] in our labels, in our packaging, in the way we do communications.” The two-day workshop was organized at The Food School Bangkok, Thailand’s first multinational culinary institute. According to School Director Laurent Casteret, culinary institutes should be “heavily involved” educating aspiring chefs in techniques for healthy cooking and reducing food waste. “By sensitizing our students to the respectful use of ingredients, limiting waste, we focus on the best available products enhancing the healthy food environment,” he said. “The new generation of Thai chefs constantly look for healthier ingredients […] farm to table and organic products are also more and more chosen in their menus, which contribute to healthier cooking and sustainable food environments.” Source: https://www.thailandnow.in.th/current-affairs/intl-youths-influencers-gather-in-bangkok-for-unicef-fix-my-food-initiative/ -- © Copyright THAILAND NOW 2023-05-17 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. BANGKOK (NNT) - The private sector has responded to the election results, acknowledging people’s desire for change. The Thai Chamber of Commerce’s chairman says it is normal for new generations to take roles in national administration. The Thai Chamber of Commerce’s Chairman Sanan Angubolkul has voiced his opinion regarding the election results as the current opposition parties Move Forward and Pheu Thai took the most seats in the lower house. Mr. Sanan said this election, as indicated by a high voter turnout, clearly reflects people’s desire for change. He said given the current results, the Move Forward party should lead the process of forming a government, while the private sector awaits new policies. Mr. Sanan said it was normal for people of the younger generation to hold office in this day and age, which is similar to the United Kingdom, France, and Canada. The TCC chairman noted the crucial element would be the ability to unite people with skills and knowledge in national administration, as all sectors want to see a stable and strong government with the ability to manage the country without interruptions. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Cabinet has greenlit an extension for the Marmoset vaccine testing project, aimed at studying the safety and efficacy of a subunit vaccine candidate for COVID-19 prevention. According to Deputy Government Spokesperson Traisulee Traisoranakul, the program was originally set to terminate last month but the project’s timeline has since been extended to December 29 this year. She explained that the extension was prompted by several challenges faced during the project’s implementation, including delays in the purchase and delivery of marmosets, which are crucial for the testing. Additionally, the Cabinet has approved an extension for Phase 2A human trials of a plant-based subunit vaccine candidate, also to December 29th, 2023. Factors such as safety data from previous trials have contributed to the need for an extended timeline in order to ensure maximum safety and efficacy. In addition to these changes, the Cabinet has authorized adjustments to 99 projects across several provinces, with a combined budget of 422.55 million baht. These adjustments involve the cancellation, timeline extension or modification of important project details. Move Forward Party MP-elect Resigns After Being Arrested for Drunk Driving in Bangkok The Move Forward Party party-list future member of Parliament Ms. Nateepat Kulsetthasith, 46, resigned from the party on Tuesday (May 16th) after she was arrested in Bangkok for drunk driving. This was only one day after being elected in the Thai election on May 14th. Ms. Nateepat told the Thai press “Last night, May 15th, I hung out with a few friends. I drank about four glasses of alcohol. After that, I drove my car though a police checkpoint. I followed what the police asked me to do in terms of a test but I called my friends to come to me before I did the alcohol breath test to be observers. This is entirely my fault and has nothing to do with the Move Forward Party. I am very sorry for the voters who have supported me. I have to take responsibility for what I have done and resign from my position.” Full Story: https://thepattayanews.com/2023/05/16/move-forward-party-mp-elect-resigns-after-being-arrested-for-drunk-driving-in-bangkok/ -- © Copyright The Pattaya News 2023-05-16 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Another roadwork project began on Pattaya’s Sukhumvit Road today, May 16th, near the Ford dealership. The repair might affect the traffic flow around the area for quite a while, said Pattaya deputy mayor Manoch Nongyai. However, it was necessary because the road surface was in a dilapidated condition. Other spots on Sukhumvit Road would soon see similar roadworks, Manoch stated. A soon-to-be Member of Parliament from Thailand’s Move Forward Party (MFP) was arrested for drink driving in Bangkok in the early hours of the morning. Today, she apologised for her behaviour and announced her resignation from the party. The drink driver held the 27th spot on the MFP’s party list, meaning she would have definitely become an MP once MFP leader Pita Limjaroenrat formed a coalition government following the opposition parties’ victory in Sunday’s elections – given that the democratic process is not interrupted by the military as it has been in the past. Last night, traffic police set up an alcohol measurement checkpoint to catch drink drivers along the Prasert-Manukit Road in Chorakhe subdistrict in Bangkok’s Lat Phrao district. At 2am, officers stopped a “suspicious” looking car with a Bangkok registration plate driven by Nateepat Kulsetthasith, a party list member belonging to the MFP – the opposition party that took Thailand’s elections by storm on Sunday. For this election, the House of Representatives has 500 members – 400 elected from constituencies and 100 from party lists. Yesterday, the Election Commission declared the MFP the winner of Sunday’s election – with 151 MPs, 112 from constituencies, and 39 from the party list. While Sararat has yet to confess to any murders, she did acknowledge giving cyanide to her late husband, Suttisak “Dae” Poonkwan, as well as one of the victims, Siriporn “Koy” Khanwong. Police Officer Namkiat Theerarojanapong yesterday visited Sararat at the Central Women’s Correctional Institution in Bangkok for the third round of questioning. The aim was to unravel any remaining uncertainties surrounding the case. During the interrogation, Sararat requested to meet with the Deputy Commissioner of the Royal Thai Police (RTP), Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn, and her police ex-husband, Withun “Off” Rangsiwuthaporn. Both Big Joke and Off met with Sararat yesterday evening and shared the details of their discussion today. Big Joke disclosed that while Sararat had not confessed to the murders of the 14 victims and the attempted murder of a survivor, she did admit to providing cyanide to Koy. According to Big Joke’s latest update, Off was initially charged with misappropriation, fraud, forgery of documents, and damaging criminal evidence. Phuket, which raises more taxes for the central government, per capita, than any other province, often complains that its value as a tax collector for the Thai government is overlooked. According to a Bangkok Post report, local tourism operators want Phuket people to be able to choose their own governor. They say this could help create local solutions to local problems – the “taxi mafia” being an example of one such very local problem. The Move Forward Party, which won the most parliamentary seats in Sunday’s election, has previously talked of administration reform, including allowing places other than Bangkok and Pattaya to hold governor elections.
