The specific date within this period on which Thais can vote will be determined by the Thai embassy and consulate in each respective country, according to Sawaeng Boonmee, secretary-general for the Election Commission (EC). In a conversation with the Foreign Ministry, Boonmee mentioned that they are anticipating some difficulties with overseas voting in Sudan, a northeast African nation currently dealing with a civil war. A collaborative effort involving the Thai EC, the Foreign Ministry’s Department of Consular Affairs, Airports of Thailand, Thailand Post, and Thai Airways International will ensure that the overseas ballot papers are delivered securely. They will be transported in diplomatic pouches or personally handed over by embassy officials to the EC by May 9. The ballots will then be forwarded individually to the 400 constituencies based on the registered location of each voter. The overseas vote-counting will occur simultaneously with the votes cast at local polling stations on May 14, reports Bangkok Post. 6. PHOTO: Sutthiwit Chayutworakan (Bangkok Post) This morning, a motorcycle delivery rider in Samut Prakan, made a surprising discovery when he opened a package that was meant to be an empty mobile phone box, only to find it contained a sachet of the illegal drug ketamine. The delivery driver received a call through his employer’s service system, requesting the pick up of a package from a customer in Soi Si Dan 5, tambon Samrong Nua of Mueang district. The sender handed over a mobile phone box, stating it was empty, and paid the delivery rider 200 baht for his services – 40-50 baht above the standard fee. The higher price only heightened suspicion for the keen-eyed rider, who decided to examine the box further before proceeding with the delivery. Feeling the weight of the box raised his suspicions, the delivery driver chose to find a nearby petrol station to pull over and take a closer look at its contents. Upon opening the box, he found a sachet containing the illegal substance ketamine – a drug commonly used as a tranquiliser for horses but sometimes misused by humans for recreational purposes. Concerned that he might be caught in possession of the drugs at a checkpoint, the driver decided to alert the police immediately. He contacted the Samrong Nua Police Station by phone to inform them of his unexpected discovery and subsequently reported to the station for further questioning. The police have since launched an investigation to track down the sender of the package, as reported by Bangkok Post. This incident highlights the need for delivery riders to stay vigilant and exercise their discretion when handling packages. One can only imagine the potential legal consequences that the driver might have faced had he not decided to check the package before continuing on his journey. It is worth noting that while it is a driver’s responsibility to be aware of what they are transporting to some extent, it is unlikely that they would have full knowledge of every package they deliver. Ultimately, the use of common sense and instinct can go a long way in ensuring a safe and secure service for both the driver and the end recipient. 12. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) plans to expand the Khao San water splashing zone to include Bang Lamphu and Ratchadamnoen for next year’s Songkran festival. The move was announced by Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, following the success of 2023 Songkran festival in the capital with both Thai and foreign revelers enjoying the festivities. However, he indicated that the first day of Songkran saw overcrowding on Khao San Road, one of Bangkok’s main water splashing sites. This led to the governor reaching the decision to expand the area to include Bang Lamphu and Ratchadamnoen. The Bangkok Governor applauded this year’s Songkran events, which were organized on a full scale compared to previous subdued events during the pandemic. About 20,000 people visited Lan Khon Muang Plaza in front of Bangkok City Hall, and 50,000 people visited Khao San Road each day. In Silom, there were 25,000-30,000 visitors on the first day, 35,000-40,000 on the second day and about 50,000 on the third day. In Siam Square and the Pathumwan district, about 900,000 to 1 million people visited over 4 days, illustrating the popularity of Songkran among Thais and foreigners. Governor Chadchart further noted that the crowding problem on Khao San Road was due to too many revelers, which was addressed by implementing a one-way walking route on April 14.
