  1. I go to renew my current two year license this week at Kumphawapi,

    - what extra is needed from two to five?
    - Don’t have yellow book is anything else accepted?

    Thanks

    Passport and usual copies.
    Residence certificate.( free from IO)
Medical certificate. (100 baht from clinic).
Do 4 reaction, colour tests etc etc

Just did mine a couple of weeks ago at Ayutthaya.
    Paid 550 baht ( car only ).
You should get 5 years + up to your birthday ( 5 1/2 years in my case)

Don’t let it expire or they will just give you another 2 year.

Note: this was my experience, yours might vary, if you can call in to ask them first.
  2. And at the end of the day the traditional POTY thread is about having a bit of fun at Xmas. I don't think anyone takes it seriously.
We poke each other in the eye and even the Mods join in.

I agree with that totally, I do post some comments on it and I enjoy the banter.
But you cannot deny this years was quite a feeble affair, could have been down to the connecting issues or the fact that the winner was nailed on or maybe that people don’t like the fact that you cannot change your vote anymore so there was no real dirt digging or slandering to try and gain votes ?
If it was the latter then we (TVF members) have a chance to voice our opinion and maybe make some changes to bring back it’s popularity here.

That’s all I am trying to do.

  3. If the photography forum wants to run a "toggler of the year" or the diy want to run a "handyman of the year" thread then go for it.
    No-one is stopping you.
And it might create a bit more interest in the subforums.

Definitely don’t know what this one is about or who it is addressed to . ?
  4. You do the forum for a year, come late November you go to the general forum and nominate your 3 favorite posters.
    Then you vote.
    How difficult is that?

Not quite sure what you mean ?

We all know how it works and can see it is struggling to attract posters.

This thread is about increasing popularity in the POTY thread.

  5. I have to disagree again.

Members are only going to vote for the posters they know, are credible to them and are who they consider, for whatever reasons, their favorite posters. I also doubt that thousands of members will suddenly nominate themselves, it`s mostly going to be those who are the most active participants on these forums and threads, like myself for example.

Regarding the logistics and software, I do agree it`s would take some organising and involve additional work for the organisers. But it would mean that all TV members who would like to be in the running for TV poster of the year have equal opportunities to do so.

It could be stipulated that members only with a certain minimum number of posts can be nominees, therefore excluding newbies that maybe trolls or just time wasters.

Only throwing out some ideas that might spice this up a bit, my suggestion box.

Okay we’re never gonna agree 100% but that’s okay, that’s what TVF is about.

I do agree with you that posters should have been a member for a certain amount of time and have posted a certain number of times.
There was a peculiar situation where one candidate achieved zero votes, not even the guy who nominated him voted for him !!
  6. Many of my friends are TV members and their opinions are that TV has its favorites, especially in the Chiang Mai threads, that gives them an unfair advantage of being nominated for the POTY title. The same names seem to be mentioned time and time again and heavily supported by mates on TV that rather takes all the other members out the running completely.

Would it not be a fairer system to allow members who participate the most on TV to nominate themselves, given a certain time frame to put their names forward and let all other members vote for them? For example; I wouldn`t have minded being in the running myself but not given the opportunity of placing myself forward and there are several more like myself. Also, there are those who prefer not to be part of the nominated few.

Would this not make the POTY awards more interesting and give all members a wider choice of being part of the poster of the year?

That could work but likely would end up with some posters putting their own name forward only to be sadly dismayed at the few , if any , votes they get !!

Our own opinion of ourselves is not always shared by the general public !!

I still think that candidates should be nominated by the majority .

  7. First and foremost, members should be required to provide links to the posts that led them to nominate their candidates.

To me, the actual process looks like a "buddy thing"...either you are part of a certain group, or coterie, or you stand no chance.

There is absolutely no connection with whatever was posted by the winner.

Not everyone is following each candidate...for example, a certain Babboon was widely supported...good for him, but based on what?

Other members, such as myself, are unlikely to spend hours searching among hundreds or thousands of posts in order to find out why someone was selected in the first place.

In the end, it looks much more like a (virtual) popularity contest, than a posting contest.

I see what you’re saying but surely if it is a popularity contest it’s because you agree with what someone has posted, like their photos , find their jokes funny or just thought their posts are on the same wavelength as your own ?

  8. Clearly the mods screwed everything up. That, and almost no one was even aware of the contest.  I'm happy for Colin, and had I voted I would have voted for him.

It used to be fun and the only reason it's still a little bit fut of fun is due to the heroic efforts of our emcee these past few years, Geronimo. He's MY POTY.

Next year, my suggestion is to turn the whole running of the contest over to Jingthing who will make the contest exciting, fair and fun. I hereby prematurely nominate Geronimo as next years POTY.

I have to agree with both your points here, I nominated Geronimo and was disappointed he didn’t run .
  9. Yes, the result definitely seemed predetermined this year. It would have probably happened anyway though.
In previous years it was totally allowed for people to bring up opposition research on competitors which is basically looking at their old posts and using them against them.
Positive posting history of course could be used as well to support a person's chances or at least balance out the negative stuff.
That used to be a big thing in previous exciting contests.
Pretty much nonexistent now. Mostly silly banter.
After all, what is it that people are supposedly judging members on?
Their hair style? The size of their genitals? No. It is about their POSTING HISTORY, positive and negative.
That seemed to be off limits now, making the POTY even more bland than it needed to be.
But even then, it would have been mostly pointless to do so anyway as the main reason to do that in previous years was to encourage people to change their votes, which the software used to allow.
So it's basically become a castrated contest.
I don't believe all those humor categories would help at all.
It's less than one percent of the members that are interested at all.
That would be desperate lipstick on a pig tactics.

Think you have hit on the big difference.

The ability to be able to change your vote makes it more competitive and encourages nominees to dig up dirt or blatantly make sh£t up to gain votes, turning it from a straightforward election into a competition ( the dirtier the better [emoji51]).

  10. Your O-A visa has an “ enter before “ date on it which is 1 year after it was issued, up to the enter before date you are allowed to come and go on the multi entry part of the visa.

When you reach the enter before date your visa expires, if you re entered the country slightly before it expires you will have an “ admitted to stay” stamp in your passport with a date 1 year in the future, hence the 2 years obtained from an O-A visa often quoted.

Note: 1st year you are on an O-A multi entry visa.

2nd year you are on permission to stay kept alive by using re-entry permits.

3rd year and onwards you are on extension to stay based on retirement and need to continue using re-entry permits.

EDIT: Joe beat me too it ☹️

  11. yeah, I was on a pub quiz team and we were arguing 'it's Billy Joel!!!' 'get outta here ye little punk, the 4 seasons were around before yew were born...' but he was right and we lost because of my mistake...an ignominious defeat...but at least we were in a pub in Jakarta so things weren't taken seriously...

Kinda reminds me of my youth.

Used to hang around in the pub drinking excessively and to make it a bit more interesting used to play a lot of drinking games .
One particular day someone came up with “name a popular artist beginning with “ starts at A and whoever couldn’t think of one had to drink a large mouthful and then started with B etc etc
Was going well until Z when someone says ( using Brit English) zed zed Top !!

To quote Phil “ man we just fell about the place “ !

Of course in those days heaven was a pint of bitter on the table and this on the jukebox .

  12. I just had a big bowl of chicken & vegetable soup, 1/2 a bagel and a mince pie, washed down with a cup of tea.
Made it all myself and it cost around 40bht in total, you high flyers and your 6,000bht celebrations, have more money than sense.

I’ve just shared a 150 baht “ big fish “ from the market with ‘er indoors, probably gonna have a cup of jasmine tea ( 60 baht for 25 from Big C ) and a handful of wheat crackers in about 15 minutes.
Have a shower and take the young lady to the local temple about 11 pm so she can do her stuff !!

Might splash out on an iced tea later on but that will be my New Year celebrations !!
