Land border vaccine requirement
persimmon replied to Sambo5000's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
So no check getting back into Thailand , what about Laos ? -
I don`t think you can say Patts is more dangerous than say , Udon . Yes , more foreigners die in Patts, but then there are many more of them than in Udon . If you watch Thai Rath News Show , there is a lot of crime in the Udon area , much of it drug related , and guns seem to be cheap and easy to get hold of . Bottom line is - stay away from dodgy areas and people , and don`t get into disputes with locals , particularly where money / serious loss of face is involved .

If residing in Thailand , does income and gains from a share portfolio ( held with a UK broker )count as UK income which needs a SA tax return ?

Reminds me of when I went to change some money at the local KTB branch . It seemed to take all afternoon , what with waiting half an hour to get to the counter , then every note had to be carefully examined ( several were rejected for very minor blemishes ) then photocopied and the copies signed by me . Wow , what a rigmarole . Never again !

Bank and passport check

I try to avoid handing over my p/p to anyone apart from Immigration , so I only give hotels a photo of the main page . Seems to work OK . If they demand to see the original , I`d just go somewhere else . I recently had to get a new ATM card ( old one date expired ) , so I gave them my old expired p/p , which they accepted ( they could not have checked my status , cos it was 6 yrs out of date ). -
There is one of these at a house on our soi . It`s huge and I wouldn`t want to be anywhere in the vacinity if it ever got out . The main reason people keep these things is to intimidate the neighbours . The Thai media has christened them " kartagorn see kah " , or 4 legged killers - that`s just about right. The owners of these dogs that savage people should be charged with manslaughter and put behind bars .

Bottom line with investing is - if you want safety , you have to accept lower returns . That usually means cash deposits or investment grade bonds . To have the chance of higher returns , you need to take more risk , which means stocks ( shares ) and holding for a minimum of 5-7 years . A global index fund ( c. 60 % US ) would give cheap coverage . The problem here is currency conversion and other fees might take a big chunk out of the returns .

New SIM cards now are only sold if you provide passport details ( and a photo ) , so it would be easy to track this guy by his phone GPS down to the nearest metre . Also , how did he think walking along the side of the road was keeping a low profile ? ???? Farangs stand out a mile here , particularly in rural areas , he would have been much safer in Patts or Bkk .

A sad spectacle indeed , these old blokes look like their only interest is drinking themselves to death . Well , each to their own , but doing it in public creates a bad impression for all us foreigners .

Bank insists I wear a mask
persimmon replied to happydays's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
All the customers in Lotus were wearing masks yesterday , so I did the same . Can`t see why anyone would object to wearing one , besides , with most of my face covered , I still get treated like I might be a handsome Farang ???? -

" Ngosi Fulani , a charity founder " . I wonder how much ( £$ ) she makes every year out of this ? .... -
investment returns.. fixed rates
persimmon replied to 1FinickyOne's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
check out the total return chart for that Henderson fund - I think you may be surprised , but not in a good way ! My guess FWIW would be one of the quality dividend growth ETFs such as GGRP or FUSI . i`m sure there are many more similar in the US . -
Enforcement checking for Foreigners on overstay !

Now with face recognition technology , they don`t even need to see the p/p - one pic should tell them everything they need to know . -
If there might be a problem re. visas or onward flights , I would rather deal with these with 3-4 hrs to spare at the check-in counter , than at the boarding gate with 20 mins to spare . I have a visa and onward flight , so hopefully it`s a low risk .
-
Here`s a thought - what if you print your boarding pass online , or use the machine at the airport to print you BP , how will they check if you have a visa or onward flight then ?

From a risk / return basis , I can`t see condo purchase as a good idea . Renting and keeping the cash in the relative safety of stocks / bonds / RE in your own country would seem more sensible . Maybe land purchase in favourable areas ( ie. roadsides where there is development potential , or agricultural ) might make more sense .

I got it in March `20 and I`m just getting back to normal now . Felt really tired with bad headaches for the first week , then almost back to normal , but then for the last few months I still get headaches and sweating . One of the most disconcerting symptoms was the inability to think clearly - I remember driving round a roundabout about 4 times because I couldn't remember which exit to take . I`ve talked to other people who confirmed that loss of mental capacity is a symptom - let`s hope it doesn`t come back .

Is the border to Vientiane open now?
persimmon replied to GoGet's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Why not print it out , just to be on the safe side , only takes a couple of mins . -
Similarly , the guy who lives down the road works on his land and often crosses the road on his small tractor . Doesn`t seem to be a problem . I was surprised though when I checked into a small hotel in Patts , the lady behind the counter I would guess was Russian - can`t see haw that can be legal ?
