Yes, I lived in Brazil for 20 years and on our frequent visits to the coast ( São Paulo and Rio states ) large trucks would come down from the North full of coconuts and people would flock to buy them !! much better than the local ones.

We lived in Kingston 10, off Molines Road. My M-in-L had some family land in the hills near Bath. We went up there frequently to visit the hot springs. When we passed this particular tree there was often a local hanging about. This tree, the only one I know of, grew nuts as big as footballs. It was considered lucky to be there when a nut fell. Even luckier if they happened to take it home. Not so lucky if it bounced down the road and whacked a vehicle, or hit you on the head.

Some superstitious areas in the Caribbean. I was in Hatti one once and watched as a dozen naked ladies writhed on the floor to the rhythm of the drum. Sugar alcohol (dark rum) played its role but essentially it was a Voodoo thing.

What about making it in 500 ml bottle for 20 baht ? Now that would be a bargain , though personally I vote for 100 ml bottles for 4 baht

Excellent maths there BestB. But, think of cost-effectiveness.

My Idea is to have a 1000 litre drum and get the people to simply refill their 800ml bottles. Would cut costs tremendously. might be able to do a refill for as little as 31 baht. Would need about 10 drums to cover all the smells. And then there's the conditioner. It's a quandary, a dilemma even. Some clever Thai wife of a farang will be doing it soon.

Don't you think Owl Sees All has enough emotional distress with his monetary loss, without you adding to it? I'll forgive you this time, but don't let it happen again.

Love it! Someone actually concerned about me. I'll tell the wife. Get her jealous. On second thoughts I'd better not. Don't want any more cats chucked at me.

Tried the Banana Herbal shampoo last night. It lathered up well and washed me good. But, when I'd finished, I walked past the wife naked, and she asked if I was going to shower!!! What happened to the smell of banana?

I'm going to mix what's left of the Butterfly Pea with the Banana. But!! Do you remember that plasticine as a kid, eventually it all got mixed together in a horrid brown/grey mess? I'm a tad concerned that the shampoo could finish up a not so nice colour. Gonna try it anyway.

In old Thailand the standard measure of volume was 'Thanan' (Coconut shell used for measuring (ทะนาน)).

Western influences decided that one 'Thanan' is equal to 1 litre.

Obviously, the coconut shell, used to measure the content of the shampoo, was is a bit smaller than usual.

This is interesting and thought-provoking. However, I don't think for one minute that is why the shampoo is a rip-off. Someone, or some company, is making a huge killing. Look at it this way, 100,000 litres paid for, but only 80,000 litres finishes up in people's bathrooms. Where did the 20k litres go? Got your attention now, haven't I, chickenlegs?

Would Thai trading Standards be involved if someone were to send them the proof? I'll not inform them. No! Not me. But someone else might in the not-to-distant future. Look what happened to the lottery sellers!? This scandal is on a similar scale!

The really silly thing is, that 'Happy Mart' only has to put a sticker over the 1000ml bit, with one saying 800ml, and everybody would be happy (especially me if they drop the price to 31/32 baht). Why don't they do it then? Is there fiddling going on at the very top?

I love drinking coconut water/milk now and often buy it, I have a “ soup “ spoon in the car just for scooping out the contents afterwards !!
    How sad am I !!

You are not sad Andy D. We would do similar when Father brought home a coconut. later in life, I lived in Jamacia with my 7-day Adventist, third wife. The trees in the Caribbean can be as much as 100 metres tall, and many people are hurt by falling nuts as they whittle wood under the swaying palms. I actually learned how to climb these trees to recover the fruit. These were wonderful nuts; the like of which I've not found in Thailand.

If you want to save time - my GF cuts my hair with no comb in place on the clippers. About 1 mm long when she's done.

Only needs shampooing once a week, and I don't use conditioner because at that length it's superfluous.

This advice comes free, but think of the money you could save now, even after being mulcted of your life savings previously.

    1

Until just last week I'd never used conditioner. I'm in no way a caveman, but they didn't use conditioner did they?

My daughter cuts my hair (cutting tomorrow) and just like you, it's about 1mm long when she is finished. But there is hair on my body. You probably have some. And my beard.

It would take me a year plus to go through a bottle of that shampoo, especially because I only bathe once a week

I hear you bro'. Like that myself when Fatima left me for the German Surgeon. Took ages to regain my self-respect. Just let my self go. I got to keep 'tickles' the cat though.

That's when I started using Vim.

If it were my shop and someone complained that there was 8 bt of shampoo "missing" I would probably let him (or her) have the required shortfall, directly over their head, thereby cutting out the need for a larger or separate container...

    ;-))

if it was your shop I reckon you would be only too pleased to be notified of a 20% error. You wouldn't want the Thai Trading Standards involved. What a loss of face, when 17 of them arrive in armoured vehicles, and storm your shop.

You would thank Buddha it's a harmless (but determined) farang and not a soldier discovering the error.

Please no no no, OSA. The shampoo is for cleaning your hair. The conditioner is for CONDITIONING. That means various additives in it attach themselves to the surface of the hair so it becomes lustrous and pliable.

If you mix the two together, you are making the shampoo less effective. The conditioner will not attach itself to your follicles, because it will be emulsified by the shampoo.

OK Lacessit. I hear you. Not a good idea.

I wanted to save a bit of time in the bathroom each evening. If I could be in and out well inside 3 minutes. It would give me more time for other things.

    Thank bro'.

PP So you should wash off the shampoo before applying the conditioner in that case. OK. I get it.

Owl, I too am enjoying this thread immensely. As a late-comer I'm only halfway through it.

It makes my post on the price of sliced bread in 7 Eleven fade into insignificance.

    Right you are bluesofa.

Some good and bad news. First the bad; the shop where they sell the larger bottles was closed. But I found out they do a 5litre container also. Interesting that.

The good news is that I pointed out to the staff the actual amount the 1000ml bottle holds is just 800ml. I'm full of hope that they will do something about the shortfall.

While I was in the store I purchased a new bottle of 'banana' shampoo and also I thought I'd try their conditioner (40 baht, the same), and that is yogurt flavour.

I've also taken a pic of the bag. Go ahead and feast your eyes on the pics.

Maybe its a US Litre ? Like  the  US  gallon? ????

Sorry to mislead you dumbastheycome, but it states quite clearly on the bottle that it holds 1000ml. I just said 1 litre for those posters (not you of course) that could be confused over the term 1000ml.

Apologies bro'. Thanks for contributing to the anti-rip-off thread. And that makes you a fully paid-up member of the team (unless you wish to opt-out sometime in the future).

It is important that we are all aware of the titfulls of being too nonchalant in Thailand (or as we used to say in Dagenham, "hello Squire; are you nonchalontee?"). For some the sun never sets, and we can be led into a false mode of security.

My recommendation is that all TVForum members check the labeling on any containers holding stuff and check the contents for integrity.

You are very generous with your words bluesofa, but your 7 Eleven rant cut new ground; and bread.

Thanks for joining the anti-rip-off team. May the force be with you bro'.

When the misses gets back from tending the buffaloes we are going into town to buy a 2 litre bottle of 'Wild Natural' shampoo; essence of durian, if they are not sold out.

No good for you though Owl, it’s 89 baht for a 250 ml bottle, well out of your price range !!

It sounds fine to me, but are you sure you are actually getting 250ml?

Tip it out and pour in some water from a measuring jug. Or weigh it. And report back to the team.

Just a word about measuring volume; watch out for the meniscus.

If you really want to know about Shampoo see the Wikipedia entry... fascinating (if you're into the chemistry behind it)..

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shampoo

Washing-up liquid (dish washing liquid) can also be used for hair, and is probably even cheaper (if you use the refill packs), ....and you don't mind smelling like a lemon.

I'll catch up with that later steve73. Thanks! I'm not as much into the chemistry as the maths.

The washing-up as shampoo theme is interesting to me 'cause I used it for a long time. Also Vim. Not seen that for years.

My dear Mother was very thrifty. When we were small she would buy this soap, carbolic. I think it was. As we children got older she discovered cheaper; floor soap, it was called. I graduated onto washing-up liquid soon after that
