That depends. What do they export to us? And what do we export to them? If we send them pork, oil seeds, cardboard boxes, uncut timber, and other natural resources, while getting back rare earths, drone components, pharma ingredients, machinery, and electronics, that means we, the USA, are in more of a colonial mercantile relationship with a "mother" country than an equitable trading system. We are dependent. They can get soybeans, corn, timber, meats, and other raw goods elsewhere. We can't replace what they make. Thank you, Bushes and Clintons.

China has the advantage of a mostly homogenous population. They've also had the US and the West give them the keys to the cookie jar for the past 30 to 35 years. And the Chinese population enjoys a high IQ, is disciplined, and geared towards being competitive. I dislike their government. But do not sell them short. Except for the tip top elite they don't suffer from a sense of entitlement--and they will not be charitable and kind when victorious. But it's not Trump that has put the US at a disadvantage. That started a long time ago. Trump didn't create a public school system that resembles a mental asylum. He didn't incentivize shipping American businesses to China and flooding them with American FDI. He didn't push China into the WTO naively thinking that they would become just another game piece in the New World Order. And most of all, while China was building up its infrastructure, military, technical capability, and educational competitiveness, the US allowed trillions and trillions of dollars to be drained into Afghanistan, Iraq, and elsewhere in the Middle East and Central Asia. That wasn't Trump. That was primarily the Bushes and the Clintons, with Obama and Biden along for the ride.

Americans were primarily concerned because 5 or 6 million people came into the country illegally and were given money, living, accommodations, and health care, while nobody even bothered to check what their backgrounds were. Americans don't like that and did something about it. Apparently, Europeans don't care who comes into their countries and lives freely off them.

John Drake replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Thai fashion is easy. Just have hiso men and women wear suits two sizes too small for them. Hip, stuff. -
Are the normal folks of Europe taking the hint?
John Drake replied to Yagoda's topic in Political Soapbox
Greece and Belgium outlaw "far right" parties, too. And in France, they've gone after Le Pen herself. Communist parties, of course, get a pass. -

Will there ever be another parliamentary election in the UK? -

They'll never be able to find out where there money is going. As soon as any populist/nationalist political party begins to gain ground and threaten the fossil parties, they all get together to declare them illegal. Or put their leaders in jail for affronts to immigrants, muslims, whatever. -
Farage’s Reform UK Surges as Tory Voters Defect in Droves
John Drake replied to Social Media's topic in World News
As someone on the outside judging from afar, it appears that it is no longer electorally possible to fix the UK's problems. Muslims have already achieved critical mass. They aren't going to let loose of control over the cities and their political party, Labor. In fact, from many of the public pronouncements I see from their leaders, they intend to advance, multiply, and eject the natives from control of their own land. -
More fundamentally, they have identified themselves as terrorist sympathizers. Hamas has been designated a terrorist group since 1997. So foreigners have had 28 years to realize they cannot support terrorist causes without losing the privilege of visiting, working, or studying in the US. And there are plenty more organizations on the list that also should make for immediate cancellation of permanent residency, tourist visa, or student visa. https://www.state.gov/foreign-terrorist-organizations/

I do like what I see out of DOGE so far. I've even turned in some programs to DOGE myself. Hope they take aim at the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Fulbright Commission. I'm sure others have made the same suggestions.

Thailand Halts Durian Exports to China Over Chemical Scare
John Drake replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
I'm thinking it's the latter. The rumors I hear, and I have no idea how true they are, is that the Chinese have cut out the middlemen. They own and ship from the durian farms directly. -
Thailand Halts Durian Exports to China Over Chemical Scare
John Drake replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
With any luck, this scare will long term discourage durian exports to China and keep Thai durians in Thailand for awhile and get the prices back down to more reasonable levels. -
UK Retailers Demand Crackdown on Chinese Tax Loophole
John Drake replied to Social Media's topic in World News
It is occurring. Last week I had Fedex deliver a used book (US$17) I ordered from South Africa. The fedex driver collected 52 baht on delivery and gave me a tax receipt. Used books I've ordered through ThaiPost, however, have not been imposing the tax.
