  1. She seemed to be good at putting criminals behind bars as a prosecutor. Probably can speak but clever enough to not get into interviews as she is leading without one. I guess the Republican party can urge the Democratic party to reject her then let Biden stand again.
  2. Harry Potter's Dobby does it. 😁 Also it seems common in Thailand's South. https://aseannow.com/topic/15620-referring-to-oneself-by-ones-name/
  3. I found it works with friends, to use your first name instead of pronouns. Purdey thinks that's a good idea. Purdey likes coffee etc.
  4. Thaksin's 2001 and 2005 governments launched programs to reduce poverty, expand infrastructure, promote small and medium-sized enterprises, and extend universal healthcare coverage. It is hard to imagine they forgot all that but the young ones who don't know history may not remember. However, he was elected a second time with an overwhelming majority in 2005 and I feel that is when the old guard turned against him for not playing musical chairs. He was simply too popular. Westerners only remember his ill-fated, failed, war on drugs.
  5. Even though I agree the 10,000 baht giveaway was a vote buyer, people still see it as free money. If Pheu Thai ends it there will be an outcry.
  6. Peaceful people can be converted to violence by a song? Or weren't they peaceful to start with?
  7. I hope she dumps the 10,000 baht giveaway but promises to use the money to improve rural development and education. We can all dream.
  8. Somchai: next time wait until she's at the second floor before pressing the red button. Then, we can get the change out of her pockets.
  9. Is radio still that influential that it can change voters' opinions? I thought radio's influence died with the start of television?
  10. No one will flinch. Family first is a basic tenet of Thai society.
  11. I think the Ukraine has proven that no matter the sophistication of your technology, a cheap drone can blow up a tank or a submarine.
  12. Ramming speed, Mr. Good. 😃
  13. I was looking at the time it was announced. My note was made before the market closed.
  14. Why is it that politicians don't keep a personal lawyer on hand to inform them if they take an action that can bite them back? Hiring a criminal sentenced in Thailand, as opposed to the one sentenced in Australia should have raised a warning flag. Announcing you want to change article 112 should have raised a huge red flag. But no, naive politicians keep doing silly things.
  15. Have to admit this is and important point. Hilary won 3 million more votes in the election and still lost.
  16. I suppose this was bound to happen once the police funds were cut to the bone. De-funding the police is popular with some groups but when you actually do it, things don't improve.
  17. Not sure what will happen to this government. My Thai colleagues are saying all ministers will be removed from their posts. Can't for the life of me understand all this.
  18. Now Srettha has been booted out from the top position, and the stock market tumbled, it is up to his replacement to decide what to do. Most rich Thais are descended from Chinese so I don't see the decision being urgent.
  19. I can't see the Pheu Thai (and Thaksin) allowing Anutin to take the reigns but, really, who is qualified?
  20. Interesting. I remember being a writer and editor of a government publication called "Thailand into the 90s" on the cusp of the new decade. The proud whispers about a dual track system were echoed back and forth across the editorial board table with some excitement. Then someone said that the same story had been discussed a decade before and nothing happened. Now, it's here! Snore....
  21. I was under the impression Thailand has among the worst education systems in Asia, certainly with terrible PISA scores. It takes a generation to really turn education around but the government is doing nothing. Schools with no electricity? Yes. Schools with no electricity but with PCs that wont run? Yes. If a foreign tech company were to establish a base here with BOI privileges, all the staff will be foreigners. How will that help the country improve?.
  22. She was a prosecutor. I am sure she can give and take with the best of them.
  23. What to do? (a) Don't copy Don because he is the only one who had this brilliant idea. It's his idea, no one else's. Na na na na. (b) keep the single mothers with two children in the service sector on minimum wage while squeezing tax money out of them (c) ensure those on minimum wage are the only ones who get a tax benefit (d) admit that Harris is a lefty, Putin-luvin' liberal and this is what they do.
  24. So, I guess that's more poor Thai workers suddenly unemployed while the management scarper.
  25. I don't answer calls from numbers that are not in my address book. Friends asked whether I might be missing an important call, but I say, if the person knows my mobile number they can sms or drop me an email so I know who it is.
