Strangely, it was Indians in India who told me this story of a Victorian era British lady walking through a town when she stopped an old Indian gentleman and asked, "Excuse me sir, could you tell me where I might find a toilet?"
He expansively waved his arm at the surrounding area and said, " Madam, the whole of India is a toilet."
When I was in Pondicheri in the south, I couldn't walk on the beach at all due to the "landmines" everywhere. Goa was clean though.
