  1. I don't think I would buy at Lotus, but I am checking out prices for 17" flat screen

HP goes for 6400 & 6900 at the large computer dealer here in Chiang Mai. Both have integrated speakers, I think the more expensive is the glossy one.

There must be some a bit cheaper.

I think Samsung is also around 6500

Quality wise both these brands seems fairly good.

    hello cmsally

can you post were you can buy in chaingmai at the prices posted

    thanks

  4. I lived in C'rai during the late 90's then went wandering about. I'm *thinking* about moving back to C'rai and building on some land I have there. The plot is sizeable enough (about 5 rai) that I would need someone to take care of it.

    So I'm wondering:

    * Approximate cost to build a western style, comfortable (not luxurious), single story 180 - 200 sm house with high ceilings

    * A small house for the caretaker.

    * Approximate cost to hire a couple to clean house and tend the property.

    * Are hilltribe folks more or less honorable and honest than the Northern Thais?

    * Are there any good (reputable and knowledgable) construction supt. type expats around and if so, at what fee? I would be on the site much of the time but my construction knowledge is limited.

Electricity and water are at the property line. The site is high and mostly rock so I would only need it elevated for cooling purposes. I don't like air-con and usually live quite nicely with fan cooling.

I'm talking good quality tile floors, quality paint treated (textured transparent overcoat) walls, good glass sliders, kitchen cabinets, ceiling fans .. etc.

I have a couple of Thai connections to help me with major purchases .. but I can't impose on them too much.

    hello klikster.

i think you would have to come to chaingrai and then shop around for a thai builder,

i know a few falang who have built houses here and have been very happy with their builder, they could show you samples of what they have built for other clients and then give you a price depending on what grade materials you want ,i think they price on how many square meters are in the house.

my experience of northern thais and hilltribe people are they are very honest but like everything else there are good and bad were ever you go.

i dont personally know of any construction type expats but once again shop around.

  5. Our next Hash is Saturday December 15!

At this 3 way intersection,(HHH sign) which is a dangerous one, swing carefully to the right and proceed north for 5.0kms until you connect with another 3 way intersection. Here you will notice 2 large public sector blue bill boards (HHH sign). Drift through this intersection to the right carefully and proceed north about 90 meters to our Soi 5 (HHH sign). Make a right turn on Soi 5 and proceed east for about 900 meters. We are at the corner of the road that leads up to Wat Pra Tat Gaut Gaow and Soi 5 (HHH sign). Look for parking along Soi 5, or along road that leads to the Wat. VIP parking is available to the early birds.

  6. And this CAT card works on a land line? You just punch the number in as you would with a prepaid card on a mobile phone?

4 hours for 500B sounds great.

I'll check it out in Chiang Rai this week.

at the moment CAT have a promotion on,its only 2 baht per minute to phone

the UK and i think the states on their prepaid phonenet card

  7. DreamTV (Agila KU) have dropped the Australia Network (ABC) from their broadcast.

    :o

Anyone know another bird that broadcasts it?

I'm told that Intelsat 8 (formerly PAS 8) carries it, but I was also told that it is too low on the western horizon to get a good signal.

    hello jai dee

i have just turned my dynasat F1 receiver on and the australia network

is still being broadcast by dream (agila ku).

dream have been playing games lately, make sure you input the 00 and the 01

code if you have a problem getting all the chanells.

if you input the active code and cant get all the chanells check the previous code

you might find they have altered the first 2 digits and input again

  8. We have a Dragonfruit plant (in a pot), it's growing well (actually it's rampant) and we've had several fruit (they're the nice red variety).

I'd like to take cuttings, can I just cut segments off and stick them in the ground? Pretty well eveything else I've done like this has worked (even the sticks that hold up trees start sprouting), just wondered if there's anything else I need to do to help it on its way :o

    hello crossy

i have quite a lot of dragon fruit,as you know they have a beautiful flower

for a couple of hours during the night then the flower dies in the morning, the fruit is

    delicious.

you are supposed to build a concrete scaffold, one 2 metre concrete pipe(maybe 100baht)

put in the ground 30cm i also fill the 30 cm with concrete for more weight, then take 4 cutting

the bigger the better from your pot and put them in a moist plastic bag with compost etc,

when they start to sprout roots plant them around the concrete pipe and help them as they grow

by tieing the paper like string you can buy in all different coulours for 5 baht a roll.

when they have grown to the top of the pipe put a concrete square top about 70cm square

(easy to make yourself) and make 4 nail holes in the pipe and secure with wire,

the first one i put in my garden was 3 years ago,ive had over 30 kilo of fruit from this one

this year i will trim it down this year and replant more with the cutting

  9. This Saturday will be the 4th Annual Chiang Rai Hash. To celebrate the occasion, Wild Woman and Wirgin Bluce have offered to host the party at their property on the Khun Korn Waterfall road. Wild Woman will wine and dine attendees but she asks you contact her directly at 081-602-1666 so that she knows how much food to prepare. Also the new GM and supporting offices will be chosen so we need your nominations and votes. Because the sun is setting earlier, THE HASH WILL START AT 3-30PM

There will be two courses - an easy course for the children and the less adventurous and a longer course that offers some of the most spectacular scenery of any CR hash. Wirgin Bluce has already sent out driving directions (SEE ABOVE POST) but if you have any questions, give me a call.

Hope to see you Sat. and bring the kids!

  10. Hi all

Saturday Nov 17 is our anniversary run. It will take place near my farm off the road to the Khon Korn waterfalls. To get there starting at the Big C, go south towards Bangkok on Highway 1 about 10 kilometers. At the traffic light turn right. Drive past the white temple to the end of the road (about 4 km). At the three way intersection turn left. Here you will go another 5 km or so and then turn right at the sign which says Khun Korn Waterfalls (HHH sign). Go along this road about 4 km. Where the road sharply to the left at a temple, (HHH sign) you turn into the temple on your left and park. It will take about 25 minutes to get there from the Big C.

If you are already in town, drive south through Den Haa on the old Chiangmai road. About 15 km beyond Den Haa you come to the run off to Khun Korn Waterfalls. Turn right there and follow the instructions as above. It will take about 20 minutes to get there from the bridge at Pratu Chiangmai.

There will be a short cut for young children and those otherwise not able to do the whole route. That cuts out the most challenging (and exciting) part. So this run is open to all.

Hope to see you at 4 pm sharp.

    On! On!

  11. I live in a small village 15 miles east of Chiang Rai and the land line I have is with the TOT telephone company. I want to get high speed internet service put in. Is my only option to have TOT put in a satellite dish? And if so, does their high speed internet system work OK?

first i would check in your village to see if anyone as an internet conection.

it might not be the case that your line is from TOT i know the envelope says

T0T but i think they also send TT&T bills out as well.

CAT also do a satellite dish internet service

  12. I was reading, in the Pattaya forum, about the UK government's decision to freeze pensions for expats from the day they leave the UK. I'd been aware of this for some time, and I understand it goes to the ECHR in a month or so. Hopefully, they'll rule in favour of the complainants. It IS, IMO, grossly unfair to freeze payments at the old rate just because someone has chosen to live their dotage out abroad. But ... and here's what I want to get some feedback on ... does anyone have experience of the situation for UK expats who marry Thai women? Does the UK pension go up any to take account of the marriage, even though it has taken place outside the UK? Does the spouse of a UK expat continue to get any kind of pension after the expat has 'popped their cloggs'? I'm not of pensionable age ... yet. 10 years to go.

    Any feedback will be welcome.

  13. a woman was lying in the hospital bed after just giving birth,

the nurse walks in to show the woman her newborn baby,

before she gives the woman the baby the nurse says " i

hope you dont mind me saying but do you know the babies black,"

the woman replies "im not surprised i was down on my luck and the

only work i could get was in a porno movie and the lead man was black",

the nurse says "do you know its got blond hair" the woman replies

"there was a swedish guy in the movie aswell" the nurse says "do you

know its got slanty eyes"the woman replies "there was a chinese guy in

    the movie aswell"

with that the nurse gives the baby to the woman who turns the baby over

and gives it a smack on the bum

"what did you do that for" the nurse exclaims

"i wanted to see if it was going to bark"

  14. I really would stay clear of this school,(amec) there are a couple of good teachers but generally there just back packers trying to earn a living (dont blame them) or non qualified teachers , from a parents point of view it shows, the quality of the teaching, the teacher and parent interaction is terrible.

The price is not to bad but it does reflect in the the school , it reallty does need some money spending on it. A doctor friend of mine moved his kids there, one of them was doing really well at the previous school, but her grades went straight down when she went there, so they pulled them both out. I took my daughter out after 4 months.

i agree with you that the percentage of unqualified english speaking teachers is very high

not only in amec but also chaingrai province,i would be interested to know were you and your thai doctor friend have sent your children in order to solve the problem.

my daughter attended amec for 3 years before going overage 2 years ago,she and 6 of her friends

from amec applied at samakkhi for the english course,i believe of the 200 children that applied for this course only 60 could be accepted and i think 4 of the amec children were in the top 10 and all 7 were in the top 20.

my son also attends amec and he insists that we do not pick him up till at least 4 30 so he can play an extra half hour with his mates, the only masters degree he would pass at the moment is in cartoon network but at his age what counts to me is that he his happy and enjoying his childhood.

i have emphasised to my children the importance of being able to speak thai, english, and if possible

chinesse while they are at school and then let life take its course.

  15. HISTORIC 3 COUNTRIES HASH

    THAILAND--MYANMAR--LAOS

over 60 hashers of many nationalities from thailand

and cambodia attended this historic 3 countries hash

    on 13th october.

the hash started in typical fashion, start slow and

taper off when it took 2 hours for the coach driver to

arrive at the starting point, but on reflection he did

his best to manoevure cross country to the start

    point.

the first leg of about 5k took just under an hour

for the FRBS to arrive at the chiang saen immigration

and were quickly ushered on to to the waiting boats by

the smiling thai officials without any fuss or

    problem.

the boats arrived at the myanmar casino after a

choppy crossing due to a cloud burst on the laos side

this time we were welcomed by the myanmar officials

who once again ushered the hashers through.

here we were given the option of joining the FRBS

on a run of about 4k or taking a stroll around the

casino grounds to a restaurant were myanmar beer and

snacks would be served,i was reluctantly persuaded to

take the easy option and was first in line to sample

    the excellent myanmar beer.

the next boat ride took the hashers over to laos

again past the laos officials without any fuss, this

time yours truly had no option but to bravely hash

through dense bush and mud after the earlier cloud

burst for at least 3k only to be heckled by the words

"why are we waiting" by some of the hashers waiting on

the boat for the final leg.

the boats dropped the hashers off at a restaurant on

the mekong river were the beer sot, excellent food and

the comedy show in the circle all added to this

historic hash that will never be forgotten

    hangover hash

marc lavoie(paddy boy)mike (godzilla) and friends

were not satisfied in spending many hours organising

the 3 countries hash so to coinside with marcs 40th

birthday the memorable weekend was concluded with marc

and his charming wife inviting all hashers to a

birthday hash/party at his beautiful land behind

chaingrai university, once again the hospitality and

    circle banter knew no bounds.

many thanks to marc and fellow hashers

  16. Hi

I am very interested to find school for my kid (daughter at age 2.5 yrs now) in the future.

When kid can start to learn in this school? At what age?

I try to find details on search but I didn't find in details.

    Thanks in advance

    Lakdee

    the term fees for amec

    insurance 150 baht

support fee 7,000 baht paid once a year

  17. UNIQUE HASH

the chaingrai mismanagement comittee are handing

total control for this unique hash to the infamous

    m&m squad

To coincide with Marc's 40th birthday, the

hash will be moved up one week to the 13th of Oct.

The run will be in the Golden Triangle, taking you to

3 different countries. After hash festivities will be

along the Mekong River. The cost will be 500 baht for

Thai citizens and 1000 baht for farang. The

difference in price is because the cost of entry into

Lao and Burma is cheaper for Thai citizens.

Since the M&M squad will be arranging bus transport,

entry permits, boats, food, beer etc., they need an

accurate head count by this Saturday. If you will be

joining, please let me know as soon as possible. The

M&M squad has a reputation for exceptionally lively

hashes so we anticipate 40 - 50 people from Chiang

Mai, BKK and even Japan. This is one of those hashes

    you don't want to miss.

  18. I hate seeing people with those camphor bottles stuck up their nose. It looks trashy and it can't be too good for you :o

i bought one of these inhalers about 15 years ago to help me stop smoking

by breaking the habit, every time i wanted a smoke i would sniff on the inhaler.

now 15 years smoke free thanks 100% to this inhaler i still carry one around with me

but only use it once or twice a week

  19. In my experience people are people irrespective of their faith or culture. Some are good, some are bad, sometimes good people do bad things, and sometimes bad people turn out good. This is a convoluted way of saying that making statements such as "this religion or group of NGOs are all bad" is dangerous. I have met some exceedingly good Christian missionaries who try very hard to raise the level of some very poor and marginalised people in the area. I know that some people abuse their position of trust in the communty but not every NGO officer drives around in a big white Fortuner.

Reference the monks in Thailand. The buddha did not specifically forbid the purchase of cigarettes nor mobile phones but the precepts do cover these types of things very well "abstain from trivial things of amusement" "abstain for all things that cause heedlessness" Yes some monks to use mobile phone but certainly out of the larger cities it is much less common. For a start a monk cannot own or use money so cannot purchase a renewal card for the phone.

Buddhist Monks as living in Thailand may have a wife and family IF they had them before they took on robes ie became a monk. However he cannot live with his wife as a married couple. Again the precepts forbit him from touching a women, and there are quite a number that cover "thinking lustfull thoughts" If you are interested in Buddhism and monks then I suggest you look at the Buddhism Forum.

To the original poster - the suggestion to contact one of the moderators such as P1p is a good idea. You may also wish to contact Sabaijai. Both have been in the area for quite a number of years and have a very good knowledge of Thailand.

Please feel free to continue this conversation - it is interesting but please avoid any blanket statements criticising particular organisations or religions. If you have any specific information about any specific person or organisation abusing their priveledge in Thailand then you should report them to the police and or Immigration who have to power and responsibility to investigate.

    thanks

  20. Hi All

We are thinking of getting a gas water heater for the kitchen sink. Something like the electric shower heaters but running off bottle gas.

I have not actually seen them in this country, maybe because I never bothered to look before, but I assume they must be available.

Anyone have experience with using one of these heaters? How expensive are they to buy and what are the running cost compared to electric?

The ones I’ve had in other countries worked of the water pressure, our tank is one of those blue 1000lt plastic type set about 10-12ft off the ground, would this give enough pressure to activate the heater?

Also the connections from the heater to the kitchen sink would carry hot water, it’s never going to be scalding hot so would the normal blue pipes be OK to use?

I know about having adequate ventilation so that is not an issue, just like to get some info up front.

    Thanks in advance

    D.D. :o

    hello daffy d

i bought a gas heater about 12 years ago for our shower room i paid 3,000 baht.

the heater was made in china but was not automatic,i had 12 years of excellent service apart from the

run of the mill repairs/cleaning.about 3 months ago i spotted another one at mae sai on the thai burma border this one was a slimline automatic i paid 2.500 baht for this one and so far its working like a dream,we change the gas bottle maybe every 3 or 4 months at a cost of 260 baht.

i would not have any thing else in the shower room

  21. The chosen hare for this month's hash is Trinley (no hash name yet, but this will be his third); for those of you who don't know Trinley, please keep in mind that he is five years old when you think of possible hash names for him. And not to fear--this won't be a bunny trail--as the hare's grandfather, Reverse Thrust, has eagerly laid out the trail for our brave and mighty C. Rai HHH.

The 15 September hash will follow shaded trails on and around Doi Khao Kwai, the hill 4km south of town.

Driving directions: Starting at the Little Duck Hotel (the architectural

marriage of Potala and San Quentin), leave by the western entrance, setting

your trip odometer to 0.0. Turn right from the Little Duck Hotel parking lot onto Phaholyothin Road, heading north toward town.

Take the first left at km 0.6 onto Doi Phabaht Rd. heading west. This T

intersection is marked by a sign for "Napa Lodge." If you miss the turn,

make a U-turn at the PTT gas station 50m beyond on the RH side of Phaholyothin Rd.

Follow Doi Phabaht Rd westward, crossing the old runway at km 1.0, heading toward the temple entrance archway.

Before the temple entrance, turn left to head south along the temple wall.

Turn right after the crematorium grounds at km 1.3 and head west along a

    narrow paved road.

Turn sharp left at the King's portrait at km 1.5. Follow Doi Phabaht Rd.

curving generally southwest for two and a half km. Please drive slowly

    through the community.

At km 4.0 turn right through a high wooden gate (HHH sign) onto a straight

laterite road heading north toward Doi Khao Kwai. Turn right at km 4.2

(HHH sign) heading east on a narrow dirt road past a lumber shed. Park

    in the orchard beyond.

The hash will start promptly at 4 PM to ensure that no participants are

left overnight in the deep woods. On On.
