  1. i first bought one of these inhalers over 15 years ago when i wanted to stop smoking,i had seen many thai girls using the inhalers so i thought if i could break the habit every time i wanted a smoke and have a sniff on the inhaler it might stop me from smoking,at first i would have a sniff maybe 50 times a day but i slowley weaned myself off them

now after over 15 years without smoking thanks 100% to the inhaler i

MUST still carry one with me but now its only a couple of times a month that i use it

please dont knock them,if you want to quit smoking try my way

  2. i went to mae sai today to apply for my one year marriage visa(no problem)

while i was in the office i asked the head office policeman a question.

is it possible to do 3x30 day border runs,

then go out the country and return on a tourist visa 60+30day

then do another 3x30day border runs before going out again for another tourist visa?

    yes was his reply

he said if you do 3x30 day visa runs then obtain a 60day tourist visa you will get another 30 days extention (cost 1,900b) you can also get an extra 7 days (cost 1,900b)

he said if you stay more than 180 days from the start of your 3x30 day visa runs to the end of your tourist visa extentions you can then go and do

    3x30 day border runs again.

i also said to him,if the total stay was 178 days could i pay the overstay to bring it up to the 180 days

    he said yes you can.

the officer was a very nice guy who seemed to know what he was talking about.

hope this is of help to some people

old milly says "im up all night singing and dancing"

  4. Soap,

Usually(often) when you drill into a sand layer filled with water the water will rise up inside the bore. If it rises enough then you can have a pump above ground to suck the water out. If it does not rise enough then you will have to put a pump down inside the bore to push the water out....having check valves every so often will not work. The water often rises to the level of the ground water (water table). This varies from month to month and place to place. I don't think that there are any pumps that can be placed down inside a 2 inch liner pipe....at least I have never heard of one but I could be wrong.

    Chownah

    hello chownah

this was going to be my second question but i forgot to add.

the water did come up the 2 inch pipe a few meters from ground level.

so with the 3/4 inch pipe do you still send it down to sand/water level or just send it down say about 8 metres

    thanks for your reply

  5. The drilling....I picked the spot.....he brought a two wheeled walk behind tractor with a front mounted centrifugal pump, suction and discharge hoses, steel screw together pipes (about 1.5 or 2 inch...I forget) and the couplings to screw them together, and a home made digging bit he screwed onto the bottom of the first section of pipe. The diggin bit just had some steel projections around it so that it could pulverize the dirt around it so that the dirt could be removed......there is no (or very few) large rocks in the ground here....some gravel but mostly very hard clay and clay with gravel. He use only water (no slurry). He puts the digging bit on bottom end of the first pipe and the discharge hose from the centrifugal pump on the other end and pumps water through this while it is held vertically so that soon the bit is sitting in a puddle of mud....he and his helper start to twist that pipe (and the bit attached) back and forth causing the digging bit to pulverize the dirt which gets washed out by the water being carried down by the pipe. The excess water is collected in a sump hole which he dug by hand (10 minutes work) about two metres from the bore hole so the water emerging from the borehole flows into the sump and the pump suction line takes the water out of the sump....so you can see that the water gets recycled....the dirt coming up from the well settles out in the sump and gets removed as needed. So...he just keeps rotating the pipe back and forth and the weight of the pipe puts pressure on the digging bit and as dirt is removed and washed out by the water flow around the pipe the bit and pipe sink lower and lower....when the pipe is all the way down then another section is screwed on and the process continues. He monitors the dirt as it comes up with the water and when it comes up with white sand he knows he's hit pay dirt...errrr pay water! So then he goes a bit further and he pumps some water out to see if there is enough flowing in....and.....there wasn't......so he says...."mai dee...I'll come back tomorrow and try again!"!!...only he says this all in Thai......and......sure enough he came back the next day and we hit a good supply of water and so he then installed the 3 inch pvc pipe which I supplied for the casing (linging).....3 inch is the largest diameter he will do. He put some verticle slits in the end of the casing at the level where the water bearing sand was so the water could flow in quickly and a piece of wood on the bottom to keep dirt from being sucked up I guess....I was kind of worried about the wood but he said that all his wells were done this way and it is no problem...so OK...

    Chownah

i got a couple of thai guys in and so far they have done everything as in chownah post, hopefully they are coming back saturday to finnish the work, they have drilled down 21 metres to get sand/water,they inserted a 2 inch outer lining pipe then a 3/4 inch pipe witha valve on the end,

can anybody help with a doubt i have

    (1) i have read that pumps can only pump up from i think 10 meters down,if this is the case do you have to put non returnable valves at different stages of the 21 metres and if so how many should i put in for the 21 metres

  6. What about the Hash that was going on a while ago? Now when I finally have the urge to exercise it seems to have vanished? Or, it´s still around but in hiding? :o

I don´t mind the average age being high in Chiang Rai. Personally I do just as Limbo says, spend time with both thais and farangs which means I can choose.

if you pm me with your email address i will send you directions for the hash on saturday 17 feb. the hash is on the 3rd saturday of the month

  7. Hi, I'm looking for opinions from CR residents knowledgeable about prices for village house blocks.

My wife wants me to buy a small piece of land in her home village in Wieng Chai district about 12km out of Chiang Rai. Asking price 180,000B, 150 talang wah in area. The price initially sounded OK, but after reading this thread, perhaps not.

A bit about the land. No chanote, but allegedly could be obtained later via the Kamnan, It is on the paved main road through the middle of the village. Serviced for electricity and water. It would be a slice taken off her childhood neighbors house plot. The elderly owners wife is ill and they want to get some cash by selling a piece of their land. 13 m wide road frontage, about 45m long. Fairly level, drops by about 1m from front to back. Good soil, a number of large trees and a concrete irrigation ditch at the back, with rice fields behind the land.

Opinions on whether this sounds like a fair price please.

in my opinion 180.000 for 150 tw 12 km outside chaingrai without chinote and only 13 m wide is expensive,if you work it out they are asking nearly 500,000 per rai,

also the deal is never straight forward when you start cutting slices off other pieces of land

    to mr nepal4me

i have seen land sell for as little as 5,000 baht per rai with chinote from a bank auction to 9,500/11,000 baht per talang wah (thats what sintannee 2and 7 want for their housing projects).

i agree with thaising go and see the local banks in chaingrai they have plenty of land on their books all with chinote or nor sor sam i have had dealing with the bangkok bank the kasikorn bank and the scb and found them most helpful

  10. quote name='chuchok' post='1124143' date='2007-02-06 10:18:47']Pop up to Mai Sai and do some shopping in Burma.

Do I need my passport? What about the missus? What currency is used in the markets?

Golden Triangle boat trip.Three countries in an hour.etc

Is there a longer trip... say about 3 hours?

    Good suggestions.

've heard that Wat Rong Khun is spectacular by moonlight... it's a full moon on the 3rd so maybe a night time visit is in order too.

    hello jai dee

if you do go over the border at mai sai make sure you dont need a re-entry visa if you have a one year visa.

i think there are boat trips from the pier by the dusit island hotel that will take you up to the elephant camp, hill tribes etc they would last more than 3 hours,

my favourite for lunch is the rimcock hotel buffet, the best 130 baht you will get

    but remember to go hungry.

also for a drive out for lunch passing the white temple if you carry on to phayao about 100k from chaingrai you can sit by the very big lake ,better still if you are coming from chaingmai you can turn off for phayao for lunch then visit the white temple on your way into chaingrai.

if you are a early riser and energetic they say phu chi fa is worth a visit

hope you enjoy your visit to chaingrai

  11. Would anyone like to discuss what brought them to decide on living in northern Thailand and how life has been for them? I've looked at the pictures and seen just how beautiful it is in Chiang Rai and consider each of you very fortunate to be able to wake up to such sights. What are the bonuses and drawbacks for an expat living in Chiang Rai? Is housing costs as reasonable there as the rest of Thailand? What is the daily interaction like for expats? Are the costs of foods and things reasonable? Do you plan on staying there for the rest of your life?

    Thanks

    Tom

i came to chaingrai over 20 years ago after doing the rounds in bangkok, pattaya i met my wife here 15 years ago, built a house and 2 kids later i am very happy to spend the rest of my life here in chaingrai.

but dont take my word for it,the only way to find out about anything is to see for yourself
