He's not a champion golfer. He cheats incessantly, and has an agricultural golf swing that would earn him a 12 handicap at best. He tells everyone he's a champion, stupid people believe it. He only wins "championships" on golf courses he owns. The reason he owns golf courses is because when he has applied for membership at any prestigious golf course, he's been blackballed. No one wants a cheat as a member. If you knew anything about the game, which you obviously don't, you would know honorable golfers despise Trump for dragging golf into the same muck he drags everything else.

IMO the only prominent Republicans left with a shred of integrity are Mitt Romney and Liz Cheney. The list of Cabinet and government officials who worked for Trump, and now think he is completely unfit for office, is quite long. I don't think it particularly matters who is Trump's VP. Whatever else they are, they are unlikely to be the narcissistic sociopath he is, in the event he dies.

Trump used bone spurs in his feet, as his excuse to get out of military service. They didn't seem to hamper his ability to win championships on his own golf courses. IMO his ongoing pathology probably fuelled his reaction. Too angry to be scared.

Trump has not exactly made himself a pin-up boy of the Secret Service. Think of how he was making millions off playing golf with them in attendance, in an environment where it was impossible to provide protection from a long range sniper. Then there were the events of January 6, where he tried to override the detail assigned to him, and go to the Capitol. Or putting their lives at risk during COVID, by refusing to wear a mask. The Secret Service are professionals. However, given Trump's behaviors, the job must be a major PITA.

IIRC OneMoreFarang posted a photo of Trump holding some kind of rifle, demonstrating his support of the second Amendment and the NRA. Perhaps you don't appreciate the irony of a staunch proponent of the freedom to bear arms, nearly getting nailed by said freedom.

Trump has spent all his political life stoking division and bigotry. An assassination attempt from a mentally-unbalanced person is not unexpected. A couple of commentators have expressed surprise attempts have not been made sooner. I suppose the defenders of the Second Amendment will claim the Secret Service having guns saved Trump. But what if the gunman's shot was more accurate?

I am not blaming Trump. It is when the claim is made there were no wars during his presidency, that I call BS. IIRC Trump was the guy who asked if it was feasible to nuke Iran, which is hardly the language of a pacifist. That was in the last months of his presidency, when he knew he was losing and thought a nice war, Margaret Thatcher style, could help burnish his credentials at the ballot box.
