How Can I Help My 10 Year Old Thai 'Stepdaughter'?
Lacessit replied to siftasam's topic in Chiang Mai
You may be right. One way around that is to specify in the will the house is not inherited by the daughter until she is an adult, same with any other assets. The executor pays the daughter a monthly allowance out of the assets until she is of age. By then, the daughter can decide for herself. -
IMO it is stupid to even put off a passport renewal for one day, especially when there is a question mark over the last 6 month's validity of a passport in terms of visas etc. What happens to the plan if the normal two weeks blow out to four or five, and the OP is scrambling to get his visa stamps transferred to the new passport at the same time as his extension? Why do people insist on having self-inflicted nightmares, when a little forward planning could avoid all the angst?

Fixing Thai education is not just a matter of money

Are you a teacher with 20 years experience, or a teacher who has repeated one year's experience 20 times? -
Fixing Thai education is not just a matter of money
Lacessit replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
No, not that simple. If you start teaching science, technology, engineering and math to kids, that's a good start. However, it leaves out critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities in the real world. During my working career, I guarantee I only used about 5-10% of the knowledge and training I received during primary, secondary, and tertiary education. The rest I learned on the various jobs I had. I wouldn't say the Chinese are the perfect model for schooling. If they taught critical thinking and problem-solving in China, the CCP would probably be in the dustbin of history by now. The same applies to the Thai elites, which is why nothing meaningful will be done. -

The Romans had a saying, a healthy mind in a healthy body. No doubt the converse is true as well. -

Every time I have felt masochistic, and watched Trump, he rambles, slurs his speech, slurs people as well, and lies - about everything. Biden might be old, but his speech is clear and cogent. He does "um" a fair bit, so do most people. Physically, Trump is a fat slug. Permit me to doubt Melania lets him anywhere near her. IMO it would be interesting to know how the BMI of his base compares with the American average, the same base that cheered him when he mocked Chris Christie. Gold becomes liquid at 1064 C. -
Netanyahu publicly rejects US push for Palestinian state
Lacessit replied to CharlieH's topic in The War in Israel
A Palestinian state is not going to be established until all the Arab parties can renounce the concept of destroying Israel, including Hamas. IMO Israel would be open to a Palestinian state, IF it had security guarantees from the Palestinians themselves. If someone is trying to kill me, I see no reason not to respond in kind. -

My health fund pays 50% of what is quoted, which is why I doubled the figure to $5800. In your case, if your dentist quoted me $2900, I would be out of pocket $1450. It doesn't sound as if HCF is particularly generous with its refunds. Why should I apologize, when you post incomplete and misleading information? -

I put in a non-lodgment advice 3 years ago, the ATO accepted it without comment. I have not put in a tax return for two years, again no communication. I have only been audited by the ATO once in my entire lifetime, and that was when I was on a six-figure salary back in the eighties. I think you are correct, the ATO has better things to do than chase a minority of pensioners for trifling sums. Besides which, the ATO may have absorbed the Robodebt lesson. Persecuting the poor and vulnerable just because you can has a high cost in terms of credibility and careers. -

You said in your OP you were quoted $2900. You did not say anything about a gap. I would agree $5800 for the procedure is excessive. However, IMO you are now bullsh!tting. -
It is doubtful creditors would be chasing her to another country. It would have to be a huge sum to justify the expense. Although there may be court orders waiting for her if/when she returns to Thailand. Or debt collectors, who are not known for being nice people. It took my GF about two years to earn my trust, I suggest you apply the same time frame.

Nooooo. There are only 940 million cattle in the world. We humans number 8.1 billion. We breathe out CO2 just like they do. AFAIK cattle do not drive cars, or have log fires. Besides which, we fart on average 17 times a day. If we wanted to really address the problem, we should all be burning our toast in the morning, so the charcoal could absorb those pesky intestinal gases.

The price the OP was quoted in Australia is not excessive. The clinic the dentist rents in Australia, and the receptionists/assistants they pay for, are considerably more expensive than what would be paid in Thailand. It does not matter to me. My private health fund in Australia pays half my dental expenses, so the cost of dentistry there and in Thailand comes out the same. -

OK, what was it the Soviets did not understand, that caused the breakup? Hint: Russian GDP in 1988 was $550 billion, US GDP in the same year was 5.2 trillion. -
It's a figure calculated by John Cadogan. I could find the video if I wanted to waste my time for you. I don't. The transportation sector includes everything - aircraft, trains, shipping, heavy haulage. I specifically said ICE vehicles being replaced by EV's, which most reasonable people would take to mean passenger vehicles. In your rush to dump on me, you forgot to parse the data. Try to do better next time.

There's no proof. There is a lot of rumor. Anyone seeing Trump with Putin at Helsinki saw monumental @ss-kissing. Effectively, you are approving the genocide of Ukrainians. That makes you one sick and twisted person, goodbye. -

You may be right, America is a highly polarised society. And a sick one, when it has gun laws that enable said murders of children. Trump is a bully, all bullies are cowards. IMO he would fold like a wet tissue if jailed. Remember, this is the guy that got out of military service due to "bone spurs". They don't seem to impede his golf. -

It may have been a technical failure. However, it also was a considerable factor in the breakup of the Soviet Union. -

Why Are the Chinese so very Proud of Their Culture?
Lacessit replied to GammaGlobulin's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
It is part of the problem. Another is while rural locations are cheaper to live in, banks, doctors and pharmacies are difficult to hold on to in small towns. Particularly medicos. -
There's an aged-care facility off the 118 heading out from Chiang Mai, past Doi Saket. I understand it is run by a Swiss company. 90,000 baht/month, will that do?

While we are doing the what-aboutism, how do you know the age pension will not be exempted from the resident-non-resident determination of tax status? -

My advice would be to marry a Thai, if they are not married already. Then they would only be taking a very small hit in terms of Thai taxation. What's yours, slash their wrists?
