  1. If you find the answer about rental income could you be kind enough to post back here with the answer please?

When I read up about this I took it as gross rental income before any tax (laws on how rental income is taxed has changed recently which may point to why gross is taken and not net) although this is just how I read it and it doesn't really make sense that way does it (but neither do the new rental income tax laws). Personally I would try to meet the requirement net of tax income if at all possible - thats just my opinion though.

    Good luck.

  2. Why not allow us to pay into the social security fund then..?

Now the economy is on its feet they don't need the over 50 retirees, everything points at them wanting rid.

I think even if one can afford private health insurance and even if you manage to get through your golden years without pre-existing conditions so not to increase the price with exclusions its the principal of not being allowed to pay to the social fund when others are allowed to that gets to me.

If true....good news for those of us moving on the greener pastures. I lodged my 800,000 19 years ago...it is and will be, worth a lot more...a "nice little earner"...Thanks for the good news.

It’s only good news if you plan to exchange the 800k to another currency which would mean you then no longer meet the thai visa requirement.

if you leave it in a Thai baht account there is no benefit to the high cost of baht.

  4. A forum like this tends to attract complaints, it doesnt necessarilly represnt the overall feeling, all of the time.

It does however reflect those times when maybe someone just had a bad experience, they would then come to the forum to complain and vent..

Not to say some people dont post about good experiences however I would guess that the former is a higher ratio.

My local som tam seller is lovely women always smiling, I love my Thai wife, although Im not so  keen on the Thai guy who tried to scam me.

Im more likely to post about the 'scam' experience than the smiles I got from the walk down the soi.

Are these fruits and chicken made in China? ????

No but if it’s any comfort to those who feel the need to justify living in Thailand winter is around the corner and then I’m sure the wife like me will be wanting to come home to Thailand.

there are reasons for and against both countries although the food here is really really cheap when converting to thb as a comparison

What cheese was that then? I have to go to Tops to stock up on my fav coffee.

I’m in the Uk with the wife, she can’t beleive how cheap food is here, 1 gbp for a punnit of any fruit, 1gbp for 10 bananas, 2 gbp for palma ham and salami, 4gbp for a full cooked roasted chicken, 1 gbp for a litre of milk, 4 gbp for a 200g Nescafé gold coffee, the free range eggs are cheaper and gigantic here in comparison to those tiny Thai battery eggs and the list goes on etc etc etc.

She wants to move here now to live a better standard, I can’t blame her etc things do look rather cheap and lush here at the moment.

That may be the side of Thailand that you know but I don't know any beer bar owners, neither are there any within 100km of where I live. I don't claim not to have been in a beer bar, my first few years of visiting Thailand was full of beer bars and go-go's but that was then and this is now.

I do know the owner of my local SCG franchise, I know the manager of my local Homepro and I know the family that own a very large DIY and building supply company. Without exception, all of them say business is terrible - with the SCG branch reporting its worst ever year so far.  I know the Thai/Foreign owners of a smallish bar/restaurant/resort who say this is the worst year for many and my friend who works at a large hotel in Phuket tells me that in August the occupancy rate was around 20% - August may not be high season but 20% is way lower that they are used to.

Would you like any more references, their phone numbers etc.? Or are you too busy swilling beer in your bar?

I know several small Thai business owners all whom report business is <deleted>, nothing to do with beer bars either mainly businesses like aircon sales and cleaning, restaurant owners, printers etc. Coincidence?

  8. My guess is that you should do business the Thai way meaning meet with someone higher up the food chain, take them and colleagues or family out for a slap up meal pay for it then offer to cross their palm with silver and gifts..

..then ask for a price, (the Thai way)

also youmight be disadvantaged not being thai (just like your buddies favouring you as a supplier the Thais might have their own Thai/Chinese buddies)
