  1. Not a pleasnat exp. dropping one's bike. A friend just went down and he got the gov't ins to pay for about 5,00 bht in medical exp. I would see if they'll pay up on the other bikes also. Chase her down and see if she'll come up with something, anything is better than nothing. Just threaten to call police and maybe she'll cough up some baht. Worth a try, nothing to lose.

  2. ScubaDuc, keep it simple, keep it legal. If you can't afford it, don't do it. You will enjoy it better when you have a Thai registration book and a license plate that actually belongs to your Duc. I keep copies of my reg. book as well as the letter from the Ministry of Commerce tucked away in the bike so when I come up on a police roadblock somewhere between Chang San and Chiang Rai I've got everything to prove it's legal and I own it.

Thanks all of you for hints and suggestions. Of course I would want to keep the bike legal and surely I will NOT put any mud flaps or other Thai customization: The bike is stock except for a Termignoni carbon slip-on and dynojet kit. I also enjoyed the sarcasm of those who suggested I cut my bike in parts... :D , for I hope it was sarcasm... For your info, Ducs have tubular frames which are already soldered: Surely the duty on a 10 yrs old bike can't be that much. How do they calculate duty..I mean based on what value?

As far as Thai spelling bikes "Harley"...Here in Europe the ABC of motorcycle is pretty simple:

A= Aprilia: B=Bimota; C=Cagiva; D=Ducati..G=Guzzi....H for Harley comes just before L for lawnmower, which is about how much power they have.... :o (just teasing back a bit!)

Edit: Arrgh! I forgot the kickstand is spring loaded....

The value is calculated on what customs think the bike is worth, not the invoice. If you think it's too much it will cost a fortune to clear and ship back. After all these replies from guys that live here with bikes which we have paid a higher price than back home don't you think we would of tried the import route. Ducs are available here. So you have a choice of listening to the good advice of others with experience or try to prove you can do it a cheaper way. Good luck!

  3. All it takes is money. Not likely worth the hassle. Import tax,reg.cost.and likely "tea". Go to the import tax page. Likely best to sell in Cambodia and buy another here.

ajahnlau - i think i want a kawasaki bike, probably the KLX 250 - what should i do, are there importers, can i go and get one somewhere, must i just keep looking for a second one or what? I'd be most grateful for your opinion - mog

Go to www.mocyc.com for 2nd hand, there's a search box just type in what you want. Red Baron or Siam super bike might help as well.
  4. Will they have a tent this year giving the bikies lessons on how to w*nk?

I would have though you know how to do that already being one :o:D

My point entirely -I know how to...I'm not over 50 and still learning!

    I can even spell "thought"...

BIKERS don't need to but maybe you and BF can set up tent to show BIKIES. I'll let you have a pull on the "pipe" after a hot days ride.

  5. You can leave it reg. in KK or re-reg. it in BKK. Will need proof of res. letter and passport copies. Takes couple months. Know guys, falang and Thai who live all over the country and bike reg. in BKK. When yearly renewal due just give reg.book to ins. agent and they'll renew it for about 80bht plus reg. and ins. cost.

  6. Traffic is nowhere near as bad as CM. Who considers Pizza Co good food?

By Phitsanulok standards it's good food.

Loads of nice houses for rent, just need to ask right people.

I think lot's is an exaggeration. I spent a month trawling the Moo Bans and could find only a handful of houses.

Really don't know where you were but rickshaws everywhere. Bus station, train station, all hospitals, markets, etc.

I know they have them there, but my point would be that they are only there! How do you get to these places in the first place!

If you are coming from Chiang Mai then you are used to a certain standard that Phi'lok just cannot provide...

Like I said you have to ask the right people to find nice houses. As for public transport just walk out for your house to main road and buses or shared tuk tuks available. Of all the expats living here all have either mc or cars. Easy to drive when you don't have 3-4 lanes of traffic jammed all day as in CM. Yes, I just came back from there yesterday.

As for Pizza co being good food by Pilok standards what are you talking about? Only ever see tourists in there.

For the original poster come down to the pub and talk to the teachers that used to live in CM.

  7. PITSANULOK WILL ORGANIZE AN ANNUAL CELEBRATION FOR THE SHINNARAT BUDDHA IMAGE.

Pitsanulok province will organize an annual celebration event for the Shinnarat (ชินราช) Buddha Image during February 1-10.

Pitsanulok governor Pipat Wongsaroj (พิพัฒน์ วงศาโรจน์) said that Pitsanulok province and Mahathat woramahawiharn (ศรีรัตนมหาธาตุวรมหาวิหาร) temple will jointly organize the annual event in celebration of the Shinnarat (ชินราช) Buddha Image during February 1-10 at the temple in Muang district. He said that the event is aimed at allowing Thai people to pay respect to the Shinnarat (ชินราช) Buddha Image, which is an important Buddha Image for Pitsanulok and the country.

He said that the event will feature traditional performances, Dharma quizzes for students, activities promoting ethics, and OTOP goods fair. Mr. Pipat invites the people to visit the event which is organized for free.

Why is Phi'lok in the Central Forum, when it is in Northern Thailand?

Likely because there's no Northern forum
  8. There are several private hospitals that offer quality care and Eng. speaking docs. As for Farang entertainment nothing like CM at all. In Phits only 1 local pub with farang food. As for the weather it's much hotter than CM, usually 40+ in hot season.

All sounds negative but there are advantages such as traffic and air quality.

I lived in Phi'lok for 2 months. I thought the traffic was terrible - the driving is worse than CM. I never even had a decent meal there - when the Pizza Company is considered good then something is wrong. The cinema never shows films in English, there are no decent houses for rent. There are stray dogs everywhere downtown, unless you are at the shopping mall there is no rickshaws to speak of.

You may gather that I didn't altogether like the place. STAY IN CHIANG MAI!!!

Ps. My wife (from Loei) loathed the place too!

Traffic is nowhere near as bad as CM. Who considers Pizza Co good food? Most expats living in Phits don't. Loads of nice houses for rent, just need to ask right people.

Really don't know where you were but rickshaws everywhere. Bus station, train station, all hospitals, markets, etc.

Next time in town try Lady Jane's pub. Good selection of steaks, pies, fish and chips.bangers and mash, burgers, etc.

  9. I have some friends in Honda. They told me they are coming out with a new model. Said to be same generation as the Yamaha (MIO and NUOVO)....they are electirc star and no gears. They are like scooters! They said the looks will be really nice..and it should be 125cc. I forgot if its coming out this or next month. You could ask any Honda dealer!

Last time a bought a Honda Sonic, I paid extra 500baht to get a #1 license plate...that was cheap!

Yes the new model is called Click. Dealers are now taking orders for delivery middle of the month. Top model will cost about 49,000bht. can be seen at www.mocyc.com
  10. You're in a hard place. You need a Thai friend to help you out of this one or you're gonna pay the 80k. Friend might be able to go directly to the vehicle reg. office and intercept the book there or talk to the "stealer" saying you know how much it really costs and try to neg. a new deal. Good luck in getting it done right and a fair price.

  11. Is it possible to rent a car in Kampaeng Phet from a reputable company?

Where are you arriving in Thailand? Are you flying from BKK? Closest place to Kampaeng Phet is Phitsanulok. You can rent cars there at the airport and then drive to KP,little over an hour.

  12. Besides,if you stopped and helped every Thai broken down you would never get anywhere!

With regard to Harley riders, you will never get any sort of recognition from them, they are too busy practising "the look" (or grimace!).

Not that you need it, though....sabaii, sabaii.

I'll wave at most any other rider, even locals that give u the thumbs up at a red light. Don't know where u ride Bung but most HD riders do the same.

I think your maybe feeling a little insecure if you see faces with with"look". No doubt we ride with pride on our faces. Or maybe it's from the vibration on some of the older bikes or the pipes are too loud and we're grimacing. LOL
