OK. Quick update. I clicked on activity and it had 2 accounts. One in USD and one in THB. I never set these up. We wiped EVERYTHING so I could start over. The USD account has a $20 balance and is verified, but still wants to verify with Wells. Probably from previous attempts the $20. The THB account no balance and not verified and I do not think it matters.

So, I am testing by sending $15 to BKKB from that balance stored at TW. I made it all the way through the transfer approved page. I am now looking at Activity it shows a transfer in process, but the USA account still reads $20.

    Cross fingers ????

I thought that the verification was they would send a tiny amount like $0.18.  You look at your transferwise account and then let the bank know that amount.  I could be thinking about a different account though.

Do your self a favor and try to set up a free Google Voice account.  Free calls to the US and you can get most OTPs with the US number they give you.  see below

  2. Please remember, the OP has a problem with a specific bank, Wells Fargo.  I had the same issues with that bank.  You cannot use the regular transfer method with transferwise.  Wells Fargo will not allow you to transfer money to an account that is not in your name.  The boarderless account does create an account with your name on it.  But even that is not accepted by some banks.  In the case of Wells Fargo, it will work.  I cannot remember any OTPs being used but I may just have forgotten.

Any other talk about other banks or institutions than Wells Fargo, is irrelevant.  So talking about what you can or cannot do with other banks has not meaning to the OP unless you are suggesting other banks for him to switch to.

That is patently false. Why would either tenant or landlord sign a 1 year lease if it could be broken at any time with a valid reason. Leases have language about remedying defects, repairs, maintenance, etc. There is absolutely no reason for either party to sign a one year lease if it can be broken at any time with a valid reason. Furthermore, you don’t give any example of a valid reason.

If you are unsure of your length of stay sign a month to month lease. Leases are complicated documents generally designed to protect the rights of both parties.

In my case (OP), I am leaving early but only by 8 days but I intend to pay for the 8 days.

He's having trouble getting SMS and confirmation codes from his bank so he is going to cancel the borderless account and go with the regular TransferWise service (that some of us use) and is much easier IMHO

But then he can not use Wells Fargo.  I know, I tried over and over and spoke to them many times.  They will only allow you to transfer money to an account that is in your name.  The normal transferwise does not do that.  The boarderless account does.  I know the OTP issue.  In my case I use google voice where I have a us number.  It is free and does work.  I don't know if he can sign up for google voice in LOS but maybe a VPN would work.

I am presently attempting to get a new bank to replace Wells Fargo.

Just keep your Thai mobile for 1 month after you leave (or until you've emptied the account).

Have no problems receiving SMS on my (PAYG) AIS SIM when I'm in SIngapore & that's how I pay the monthly bills when I'm outside of Thailand.

I will require a Philippine number almost immediately but I guess I could switch sims when needed.

But the real problem for me is I have an expensive package that is about ฿1300 for phone, high speed data and TV. So keeping it for 2 months would not be cheap.

As a last resort, maybe I could cancel my package at the last minute and switch to a prepaid plan and then switch sims as needed.

  6. I use transferwise from wells fargo all the time and have been doing so for a year.

What I did was to open a transferwise boarderless account which is painless.  Then you have a US bank and routing number to use.

So it then becomes a two step process,

Transfer from wells fargo to the boarderless account.  I thing it has to be a wire transfer instead of an ACH or vise versa.

Transfer from the boarderless account to your Thai bank.

You can have more than one boarderless account.  I have a Thai baht account and a USD account.

  7. I  will be leaving LOS in a couple of months.  I want my bank account to be active for at least a month so that I can pay any bills and get my security deposit refund.

I was going to empty my account (since closing it overseas is not allowed) in one of two ways.  One was to use my BB debit card but I have heard different stories about how reliable this method is.  The other was to use the BB / Western Union to transfer money to my new bank in the Philippines.

The problem is the transactions require an OTP be sent to my phone.  If I am in a different country with different SIM, I will not be able to receive the OTP. There appears to be no alternative to the OTP such as Email I have asked if I can use a foreign phone number but I haven't received an answer yet.

    Any suggestions.

Tricare gets you covered here but not Medicare. I am American too and am paying a fortune for Medicare B , Medicare D plus supplement plan. They more income you have the more you have to pay. I lived in Bangkok 7 months a year for 15 yr. but will just come for a shorter time as tourist after current O-A visa (and re-entry permit) expire.

With next years increase, I will be paying medicare $144 a month.  My medicare advantage plan with drug coverage is absolutely $0.  I pay no co-pays except to see a specialist for $30.  I can even find medicare advantage plans that will be less than 0 by partially offsetting the $144.  For the 9 years I was in the US and had medicare advantage my total out of pocket was maybe $1000.00 plus the monthly medicare payment.  My former company pays me $1080 a year if I use their companies insurance agency.

I have done 7 consecutive online 90-day reports on my Apple MacBook using both Safari and Firefox. No problems.

I use a Chrome addon called IE Tab.  It just puts an icon at the top of Chrome and whenever you need IE you just click it and it opens a new tab with the look and feel of IE.  I used it many times and it has always worked.

But I don't think that the message of "most go to the office" is a browser issue. It is more likely an issue with an entry or with a TM30.

    Have you tried www.notarize.com ?

I am aware of them but I would only use them as a last resort.  The problem is that I live in Thailand and I have a Thai (in English) document.  I think that it would be a bit suspicious with a US notary stamp.

  11. From the US Consulate:

    "

Thank you for writing the U.S. consulate general in Chiang Mai. Our office can certify only the documents that are issued by the Department of State. As the lease agreement was not issued by the Department, we cannot certify that the information is correct, not can we put the consulate’s certification stamp on it.

The only service we can provide in this situation is the notarization of your own sworn statement on a blank affidavit. You can download the form from our website here: https://th.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/local-resources-of-u-s-citizens/notaries-public/affidavit/. If you believe that this document will suit your purpose, please schedule an appointment before you visit the consulate in person.

Please be informed that, unfortunately, the consular officer will not be able to notarize a statement that contain an individual person’s income statement or any statement related to financial status."

  12. For opening a bank account in the United States, I need a notarized copy of my condo lease.  I checked with the US Consulate and they will not do it.  I'm not concerned about a court case.  The bank wants proof of my residence and I guess they don't want me to fake it.  So probably anything that looks official will work.  I submitted it un-notarized and will see if they will take it.  The Bank is the State Department Federal Credit Union who must be very familiar with procedures in other countries.

If you are leaving after the 23rd, you will have failed to make a report. Likely a non-issue, but a keen eyed IO might notice this next report time. They accept late reports for up to 7 days, but are not obliged to ignore failure to report, when staying over 90 days.

There will be no next report time.
