  1. I'm looking for a decent clinic to go to for minor stuff like sore throat etc. rather then a hospital. Has anyone had any experience with Dr. Olivers or can you recommend any other clinic in the area. How are their prices for a visit compared to like Pattaya-Bangkok Hospital?

My wife went to the good Doc's with a nasty hand rash. The Doc asked if she had cut pineapples recently, received the possitive reply, told her to wear gloves, a dab or two with a magic potion, no more problems.

Cheap, efficient, not bad at all. :o

  2. When eating with friends, always blow the heavenly trumpet as loud as possible and immedeately look under the table with a frown/scowl for the offending dog. In terms and matters of the heart, an old UK penny is the key for a long term loving relationship. Brew up a good one in the nuptual bed as early as possible, stealthily place the old coin between the cheeks, let rip and if possible drop the penny on the tummy of the beloved. If she stands by you after that, laughs like a dray horse and insists on having a go herself, your long term happiness is assured.

  3. Sorry for the last. On a serious note be very careful of who you choose. I have friends here in HK who have good experiences and some who have suffered at the hands of the careless and untrained. Pattaya may not be the place to " Try out " something that is unregulated. Even the crap dentists have a bit of tin on the wall to say where they were trained.

  4. I am looking for a good Acupuncturist in Pattaya-Jomtien? anybody know of a good one or had experience of one here?

Nigel at the Iron Man Gym in Jomtien Complex is the best I've came across. His number is 060091368

A few of the Pattaya bashers strike me as being real pricks, you may try them :o

  5. 'Hermano Lobo' is right:

And we are not off-topic. We who wish to live in a country in which we are not citizens can expect to get caught out by such geopolitical events causing immigration rules to be changed.

I always look for valid reasons why the Thais are doing it. A bunch of Westerners escaping their boring lives in the West to enjoy the easy style of Thailand is probably only scratching the surface.

I personally believe that as Westerners and I have been just as guilty as anybody else, we try and project our way of thinking onto Thais and then expect them to react in a way a Westerner would. They wont and can't because they are Thais and not Westerners.

The Chinese think in terms of five, ten, fifteen or twenty-five year plans. They are always thinking long term, where we in the West are plagued by short-termism. With our accompanying 30 second attention-span!

100% correct. It's not what the Chinese are doing now that you have to worry about, as they planned it five years ago. The Thai's may not be as knee jerk as we think, who are the real targets of this action ?

  6. I honestly believe the one thing forgotten by the authorites in this whole issue, is the resilience of the type of farang they wish to remove. Be it a chinese shop owner or a european criminal, these guys will find a way to stay. They will not be put off with any legislation that has a findable loophole ( just read the threads on here ) and will happily use their ill gotten gains to carry on, situation normal. The poor farang who has tried to support a family for years, has learned the language, or if not, respects the culture and by extention the local laws, will not be in the same position. Very sad indeed.

  7. Absolutely quite amazing..... some think Mafia...some think that the victim was drunk and abusive.

The truth is they were a bunch of probably itinerant local street vendors who were nothing less than thugs and one to one would not even have had the guts to stay.

Not before time might I add that the Police have at last done something about this...their record was to say the least neglectful and irresponsible before the Mayor became involved.

Yes Fox, but don't these street sellers pay to be 'protected' by the mafia?

Could still explain the initial delay in police action - but when the sh.. hit the fan they were served up as sacrificial lambs :D

(Oh dear we're back to sheep again :o )

Who knows? but for sure the poor guy didn't deserve the unwarranted speculation on his role in the story.

Mobi....I think it`s probably the Police who they pay....

Truth probably is that the police couldn`t be bothered or it just didn`t seem important enough to them at the time. Or maybe the 4th one who is on the run is related to one of the cops at the station and he needed time to get away...all speculation...

I don`t think that the so called protection mafia would have any influence on whether the police attended or not. :D

Oh for God's sake. The MIB have arrested within in the week three of the suspects. How many do you think would have been apprehended in the UK ?

  8. I´m 46 years old. I bought a house for 5.6 milj bath and Thai gov. will not allow me to stay there after dec. this year. I think there is more people like me out there. Can anybody explaine how to do. The prices on house will drop! Or??? :o

Last time I looked a foreigner cannot own land in Thailand. If you decided to bend the rules and therefore could not get the 3 Mln investor visa, I would say change your post and dont make it look to us as if you are some kind of victim.

Whoooa, hang on a bit. Many on here are now playing a similar tune that all home owners who went the company route deserve evrything they get. Please remember the vast majority came to the LOS, found they loved the place, then being ignorant of the local laws first took advice from an agent and nine times out of ten followed that up with advice from a THAI lawyer. All in the chain smoothing the way with their words of wisdom. What else would you have done? Hindsight is a wonderful thing, as is membership of this board, but for many, this fountain of wisdomcame later after they thought they had done the right thing by taking advice from a local officer of the courts, who's back wall was covered with all the tin foil you could wish for telling the world he was qualified to offer opinion on his own countries legal system.

  9. I have been finding that there is quite considerable (muted but strongly felt) disquiet among some middle-class Thais about the number of 'undesirable farang men' who are settling in cities in Thailand, beyond the "written off" areas of Koh Samui, Phuket, Pattaya and the sleazy parts of Bangkok.

These Thais are not ones who will lose out financially if clamping down on these 'undesirable farang men' (who bring little, or negative, 'social capital' to Thailand) hits tourism, too.

I too have heard (first-hand) of such sentiment.

    :o

    JD

What was their definition of " Undesirable " ?

  10. Mate I honestly don't think there are any facts until October 1 or an official statement is posted by immigration. A friend said this....a lawer has heard this..........all speculation as the powers that be are changing their tack on an almost hourly basis. This is ###### important to us all, I enjoy the speculation, but until the true facts are published, that's all it is, speculation, the mods would't know where to start.

  11. The Thai construction workers are great starters but very poor finishers. The biggest problem is that there is no pride in workmanship. :o

Not to be critical, but Thailand is a "relationship" kind of place in which outcomes are very much a matter of the way you get on with your crew. "Construction worker" carries a sense of replaceable machine part. which does not sustain Thai attention. But this is a good subject worthy of further reflection in the context of our project, thanks for introducing it.

Could not agree more. My construction guy has become a genuine friend. This was achieved by always keeping my promises to him and respecting his calls on subjects which he clearly understood better than I. Treat people as you would like to be treated yourself. Thai builders are not little green men from another planet, there are good and bad in all societies, find a good one, treat him with respect and you will get it back in spades ( pardon the pun )

  12. High people, eye've read thru this entire thread and wanted 2 way in w/my thoughts. 1st eye will say that eye'm hear on a retirement visa sew this visa situation doesn't effect me.

    1. Eye'm against this knew regulation as it effects many persons nationwide who use the system to keep there passports legal. These are folks who are trying to abide by immigration law and most of these dudes have no real alternatives. The knew stuff only will cause confusion/panic for a great many dudes and this chaos will spread to Thai airports, border crossings, consulates and embassies. bottom line hear is that this will have ripple effect on every1, not just those dudes in the situation. Their is no weigh this is a good thing as some dudes have said.

    2. Eye've read posts from many dudes hear who think they are GDGs (gawd dammed geniuses) about visas and the Thai economy when most of them are at best mushrooms but more likely SAs (stupid anuses)

    3. This news is knot good for farangs inn Thailand no matter there visa situation. It does knot address the real problem of illegal workers and criminals hear. Those who fall into these categories are most likely knot going to even try to keep there passports up 2 date. Eye wood like to sea more compassion four those effected. I say bee nice to these effected dudes, dudes

Totally agree with most of the above. However, the real success of the policy is not the issue, the perception of Thai voters is. I went to an anti-piracy conference in Pattaya a couple of years ago and was informed by some very highly placed Thai security types that the Eastern European crime gangs in particular were on the verge of becoming uncontrolable and pressure was being placed even then on the Interior Ministry to be "seen" to be doing something about it. Add to this the simple fact that Thickskins mob have their support base in the countyside where many of their supporters claim there livelihood is at risk from " Illegals " and again, prior to the election something has to be " Seen" to be done.

Before the next election in the UK you can bet your last baht that Blair and Co will introduce stiffer polices on the floods of illegals working in the UK. The middle class will demand it, and Blair will have to be " seen " to do something or his party can pack their bags. Notice any similarity ?

  13. Good law, bad law, good regulation, bad regulation; all pretty much comes down to the test of the reasonable man. Is it reasonable for a country to have control of other countries nationals length of stay or not ? ###### sad for all those affected who have enjoyed a certain method of staying in a country they love, but if this method never existed, is what is left , the " O " , " A " system, reasonable ?

Try getting into Australia or the States ( legally ) ###### difficult without a shed load of cash. This will not affect 99.9% of your normal tourists who Thickskin and Company court so hard. It will affect a lot of folk who the Thai people do not want in their country and sadly some good people who do contribute to the society but who have little means of support. I would suggest in the eyes of the average man on the street in the LOS, the loss of the very few in the later case can be swallowed in order to get rid of a lot of the first order. Read the thread on the european bicker gangs on Samui and then ask yourself why this is all happening now. It appears to me the actions of these fools and of others of the same ilk who glare with out right aggression from the many " Footie " bars in jolly Patters, have nailed the good life for many on this thread.

But is it reasonable ????? :o

  14. I find the key to getting the right guy is only employ him after you have at least two independent recommendations from other Farang. The way the guys work for Farangs is often very different from the way they work for folk of their own race who fully understand the language and the way things work in the LOS. From what the OP has experienced you would never go with his contractor but other folk in the thread have better experiences. Not all Thai contractors are bad, far from it. However one thing for certain, do your homework before you take the plunge. Not all bad, but the majority................? :o

  15. Not sure if it is the same all over LOS, but in jolly Patters, the vast majority of crime is for quick cash, easily moved articles by local junkies. These fellows tend to be lazy ( In addition to their many vices ) and will move on to the next easier target if the security is visible. Small hi-tec gadgets perhaps not as off putting to a thick junkie as fffin big systems the bounders can see.

  16. After the land, wall/garden and kitchen are in, house around 9 mill all told. Market value? Ask the Interior Minister if he would kindly extract didgit and sort out property ownership.

It's looking good Suiging, and moving forward, not a bad price considering the size, and not least the quality as it looks... is your price incl. the land???

    Yes
