  1. To clarify, my IPTV is not CTH. It has the al jazeera sports channels and they have just announced they have secured the rights to the EPL for the coming season (middle east). Sorry for not being clear in my previous post.

  2. So what to do then? Should i wait for WETV or C Band? Or go ahead and get the KU Band? I would like to be set up for kick off but i do have an IPTV service and it will also be broadcast on that so i'm not going to miss it.

  3. I had planned to eat there but I didn't because the prices in the bistro were not at all reasonable imo. To give just one example 275 for a hamburger I can take you to numerous places in CM with a delicious burger for less than half that. Miguels and Sahara being just 2 off the top of my head. I'm not quite sure of the target market because many of the main dishes were around 500 baht and I would much prefer to go somewhere like the shangri la buffet and make an evening of it than spend that for a meal in a crowded supermarket. I had envisaged it would be something similar to foodland in BKK but it was not like that at all.

  4. Thanks all. I just need the bb gun to shoot at the pigeons and the barking dogs that come around the soi. I start looking for one and try to find the place "dolly" mentioned.

To shoot at dogs and pigeons?

"Compassion for animals is intimately connected with goodness of character; it may be confidently asserted that he who is cruel to animals cannot be a good man"

  5. So if Nimman Rd is too "Hi So" and around the Old City is retirees with ex-bargirls as wives... where is the middle ground?

Or does it not exist in this town of Chiang Mai?

    Thanks.

Nimmanhamin isn't all hi-so, there is a mix of people and even some prostitutes that hang out in the popular places, though much more discretely than on Loi Kroh. I assume the prostitutes after the men who think they're going to find a college girl.

In one regard Thailand is like everywhere else; the rich can afford to be immoral and the poor can't afford to be moral, so morality and traditional values are the preserve of the middle class. However in Thailand the young single middle class women are very concerned about their reputation, so much so that many don't want to be seen with a foreign man outside of a work or classroom environment (the sex tourists and sex-pats have given us a bad reputation). The challenges aren't insurmountable, if you take things slow you may end up in a relationship with a wonderful young lady, but you're unlikely to find one-night stands with any women other than pros.

You wrote that you're a student and indicated you want to learn Thai. Will you study on campus? If so, find someone to help you with your studies. Start out making Thai friends and go from there, but expect things to proceed slowly. If you find a middle class university student girl friend you may spend months working up to a first kiss.

One final thought, you might want to look into an apartment in the Santitham area. It's less hi-so than Nimmanhamin, and the students are more likely from to be Rajaphat University, which is the poor man's university--the women are less hi-so, less middle class, and more eager to land a man. Just be aware that some of these students are also pros.

Thanks for the tips - to be honest, I've spent most of today checking out the prices of condos in BKK - it's not that bad at all - they have some really nice ones for between 15K-20K, near to the MRT. That would leave me 30,000 Baht a month in BKK for bills and food and fun.

Not a huge sum for BKK but I know I could do it.

I think CM is too tiny for me - BKK may have terrible traffic and polution but at least it has vice and zest! Walking round the Sunday market tonight, I dunno, it's so twee. Families and couples and girls who have "found spitiuality" vegans/veggies etc... Yuck. I hate that shit! And the Soi where I live, it's like walking round the bars in the Australian outback.

That's what CM feels like to me - a cross between a small village in Feudal Japan, a lefty "organic" hippy market in some twatish part of London and the Australian outback. None of these are very appeailing.

I may pay more in BKK and maybe I won't make a full year but I think I'd rather have the bars and the nightclubs and the hecic streetlife and shopping malls. I'm also happy to run into loads more backpacker girls, if ya know wadda mean! They all seem so stuck up and cliquey here. I had one Swedish looking woman cough and wave her hands in front of her face because I dared to smoke a cigarette at the market! Bitch, it's <deleted> Thaialnd! I hate these do-gooder NGO types... If you don't like Thaialnd, F off back to your boring Western civilsation!

Sorry... ranting... I think the islolation is getting to me!

Aah... Now where's my friend Mr. Chang? There he is, hiding in the fridge again. Come here silly....

Having lived here for over 5 yrs and being in my early 30s i agree with a lot of what you say. You will prefer BKK for sure.

  6. Yes, same here with TOT Fiber in CM. I also have TRUE DOCSIS and there have also been problems with that although less frequently.

    It is pretty frustrating.

PS. I have also had 3BB in the past and over the long run i have found TOT better.

  7. Measuring the speeds is a big waste of time. If you can stream live video then you ar OK. Apparently in Bangkok and Pattaya where the rulers of the Peoples Republic Republic of Bangkok live they force TOT to provide acceptable service.

Here in Chiang Red Land TOT super sucks.

I am in Chiang Mai. i have TOT 7mb/512 ADSL and also TRUE DOCSIS 14mb/1.2.

TOT is far faster for international sites i download around 700kbps whereas on true i download around 200 kbps. I just got the TRUE looking for an improvement but now i have a 12 month contract for absolute rubbish.
