1. If you fancy going further afield (nice drive), there is a bookshop on Paknampran beach in Pranburi (30KM south of Hua Hin) that buys/sells/trades books of all sorts. It's called Beachside Books and is just past the big resort Villa Maroc, and next to Jolyn's Bar.

You can find more info on the website through facebook (there is a website but not sure if I can post URL here). They serve good drinks too.

    Cheers.

  2. Unfortunately, I don't qualify for an O visa yet as I am under 50 years old, and am engaged (to a Thai), though not married.

Just called B-ham consulate they said, if I apply for the triple entry now, for example, it will be dated to Nov. 19th, so will need to leave before then and arrive just prior to Nov 19th to activate final entry.

So I suppose that if it comes to it, I could try and get 9 months out of it, if 30 day extensions at immigration are successful. Anyway, I hope by then I will have made other arrangements for a longer term visa.

    Thanks for all the replies!

  3. Hi,

For the first time in a long time I need to come in on a tourist visa while I am in a 'transitional stage'.

Currently in England. Returning to Thailand end of May.

Need to basically get as long as I can out of a tourist visa while I sort out some affairs.

I don't even know the basics of this, as the rules seem to change every 10 minutes and I have virtually always had a Non-Im B until now.

So, I apologise for asking dumb questions.

Can I apply for a multi-entry tourist visa at the Thai consulate London (is that 60+30 days?), or do I have to get the visa on arrival (is that 30 days?)? Is there currently a charge to get the visa issued at the consulate?

My passport doesn't show any previous tourist visas, just non-im B and extensions of stay based on business.

I am not local to London or any other consulate, so have to be sure I am not wasting my time by traveling there.

Thanks for any help or advice, and sorry to no doubt be repeating previously asked and answered questions.

    TD

  4. Pran Buri is pretty large, where exactly is Aleenta located.

It's a few KM south of the restaurant you mentioned on Paknampran beach.

As for food, this should help...

Fajitas - Great Mexican/foreign food, 150 Baht a dish, 1km south of Aleenta, head towards Khao Kalok, can't miss it.

Don Dor <sp> Resort (also called Chatelet, for some reason)- Delicious, low-priced Thai food, right on the beach, next to Aleenta.

Beach Side Books - home made cookies and biscuits, great ice tea/coffee, opposite Villa Maroc.

Hua Peng - Excellent Thai food, well priced, lovely restaurant, Pranburi town, ask someone for directions.

    Enjoy.

  5. FWIW, on some Thai forums there are widespread reports of serious problems with this model. Most seem to be regeretting the decision to purchase. As with all forums, you tend to get the whiners and complainers, while those who are satisfied have other things to do. YMMV.

Depends on what they are complaining about. Was it software or hardware failures? is it the same problems?

In my final decision, was worried about the quality control of the unit. Did they rush out the unit to compete at the upcoming mobile expos?

Mostly hardware failures, as near as I can determine. Not a lot of follow up post-repair so hard to tell if it is one single issue. Again this is only ~ 20 or so different people complaining in one long thread, there could be thousands of satisfied users. My only point was that if you are considering this model it may be wise to do a bit of research, perhaps going so far as to find some people using this model? I'd also review the warranty/repair terms.

Thanks for the responses there guys. I guess I'll hold off any purchases until the 'perfect phone' hits the market! :whistling:

  6. Hi,

A year ago (March 2010, I think) while working in Bangkok I was happy to recieve a cheque out of the blue, which turned out to be a tax rebate/refund. I have since changed jobs and provinces and am wondering if by any stroke of luck there might be another cheque out there with my name on it. I dont think my employer at that time had done anything to 'apply' for the rebate as he was as surprised as me when it turned up.

I can't find the paperwork that came with it. Does anybody know how I can find out if I might be entitled to a rebate this year?

    TIA

  7. Saw this phone mentioned in a post, and wondered if anyone has one, and if so, what do they think of it?

I have never had a smart phone before, or considered purchasing a Wellcom phone, but this one does look pretty tasty.

Looked at a few reviews online, but contrary to my avatar, I'm interested in hearing from any users on here also!

    Cheers.

  8. Maybe you could have him read news stories, and write summaries of them?

Have him look at pictures, then write about the pictures within a time limit.

Brainstorm a topic, then write sentences connecting 2 or more 'branches' of the brainstorm.

Brainstom conjunctions, then have him write a simple sentence, and then use the conjunctions to make it as long as possible while maintaining integrity of grammar and meaning.

Some ideas used a while back with Japanese students.

  9. Hi,

A Thai friend has 'invited' me to be part of a one day English camp for a group of about 200 'informal education' students, aged between 15-30 years old.

I have to do a 30 odd minute rotation activity with mixed groups of about 40-50.

I have scoured the net, and seen a few games that look OK, but not many that really require any use of English.

I am assuming that the level of English amongst the participants will be virtually 0.

I have no idea if it is indoor/outdoor, size of space, resources available, or anything else other than specified above.

    Anyone got any good ideas?

    TIA

  10. I know that there's an Aikido dojo in a sports center in Hua Hin but can't recall where it exactly is.

If I'm not mistaken, the instructor is 3rd Dan.

Just passed it yesterday - the Fairtex Gym at the Grand Hotel (by the night market) is advertising Aikido, amongst other things, on it's billboard. As an aside, I had a look around a Wing Tsun Kung-<deleted> / Muay Thai gym in Khao Takiab at the weekend, it seemed pretty cool.

Cheers 10dreams......will checck that tomorrow....are you in Pranburi now???

No problems, let us know what you think of it. Yes, I am.

  12. Thanks for the replies.

I rented a scoopy to check it out. Nice and smooth, but feels so small.

Not really looking for street cred, as that does not seem to exist in (this part of ) Thailand anyway! Just something to un around on that I like the look and feel of.

Having said that....a chopper would be nice.... ;)

  13. One of the things my partner is doing at the moment is collecting used books (of all languages) from local residents and selling them to send the proceeds to help relieve those affected by the flooding in the south of Thailand, so if anyone here would like to donate, please PM me!
