  1. I am a firm believer in giving a test to all who want to come to Thailand before they get on the plane, weed out the fools and misfits. This is no place to be without a brain.

You sure you want to do that ? most of the expats here have problems or they would not be here, and all of the tourists come here for a reason, what was your story ? I would like to see which of your fools and misfits you fit into :)

  2. Re: There are only streetdogs, because (!!) someone is feeding them ! Sorry, but helping other creatures is not that easy.

I tend to agree with you overall, but I find that if I DON'T just give them the leftovers, they dig them out of the trash can and mess up the whole street...and these are trash buckets hanging from hooks more than a meter off the ground...

Get a catapult they learn quickly :)

  3. petercallen !

Please, if you do start to care for a street dog. do not forget:

You may feel to be such a good person, feeding this dog but in fact, it may mean, you help things be worth just by doing it.

This is what many Thai people do ! Give them some food but do not care for the rest.

Giving them food means, there is a bigger chance that this one will survive. that means, it will be a bigger chance, that this dog will have more babies and so on ...

Will you help all these offspring ? Offcourse not, because just feeding them will mean, there will be about some thousands of them in the future (maybe in 10 years, its kind of very fast growing rate). So , you will not feed all these offspring, so it means, if you just feed these two, there will have to die even more in the future.

(if they will not just starve, someone else will kill them. And has to kill them, because even for Thai people, it is not acceptable to have hundred dogs just in your street. ) So if you want to help this dog, you have to do it right , and if you do not do it right, you better do nothing. Yes, that means, to see him in that miserable state everyday, and to see him die one day.

Helping, will mean, to care for everything. That means taking care of a dog ! You must adopt him ! And to take care of the offspring would mean, (if you can not accept that they will just die in the street)to do steps to limit the offsprings !

If you are not willing of doing this, please do the dogs the favour of not interfere in their life (and our life). There are already too many (each one is too much!) streetdogs everywhere. And by just feeding them, you will worsen the problem. There are only streetdogs, because (!!) someone is feeding them ! Sorry, but helping other creatures is not that easy. And it seems , what you are doing is not helping, it means making things worth !

So: If you really want to take care of the dog, please adopt him (let him into your house and /or your ground) and make some kind of offspring limitation). If you do not want to do this, please do nothing !

A good post, well written, sense at last Thank You.

  4. One of your stray dogs just bit my three year old daughter as she was riding her bike in our Soi, if I had my way you would all be giving the dog mouth to mouth NOT a treatment fleas !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. I think that there are several factors here. Car ownership is still aspirational for most Thais, plus the market isn't flooded with ex rental or lease vehicles as many other countries are. Classic case of supply and demand, with in the main the latter outstripping the former, which means a lot of overpriced rubbish in the secondhand market. I've also found that in countries where new car dealers don't get involved in the second hand market (such as accepting trade-ins etc), market prices of used cars tend to be higher.

I think its simply that vehicles here are cheap to buy new and very cheap to service and repair AND there is no MOT (goverment test) to enforce safety. :)

  6. Anyone know where to find a voltage converter? We have several electrical items from the States (110v) that will not work with 220v. I have seen numerous "adapters" but can't seem to find an actual converter. I have looked at Home Pro, Big C (bottom), Jungceylon and the place across from Central.....all with no luck.

Replace your 110v items with 240v It will be simpler and cheaper, much less trouble for you :)

  7. Thai buffalos near extinction? Can't believe that; I was upcountry a couple of weeks ago and they were everywhere! I am not making some kind of joke here.

Oh good they are still all alive they are all mine I must of paid for most of them :):D

  8. Nana Plaza or Nana Disco?

Ah yes the disco, stuck in a nose once and said

No payee to visiteee bye bye.

Now theNana Plaza is a landmark,

or landmine depending on your western sensibilities.

~It has some of the best people watching in the world IMHO.

Park yourself with a beer at a bar near the entrance and you will see

an amazing cross section of humanity in all it's insanty walk by,

glide, sidle, shuffle, stagger, meander, sneak, and essentially bounce,

down the way, right under your nose.

Nana Plaza is a landmark, the best time to watch was as it closed from the rails at the entrance, with a beer provided by the street traders, all of it passed before you. :)

  9. Hi all,

I'm trying to compile a list of places it's possible to eat for free in Phuket. My definition of 'free' is quite loose. This might mean bars that put on free food for customers, even if you still have to pay for the drinks.

You can also eat free samples at Villa Market, though obviously you're not going to fill your stomach doing that...

I also hear they put on free food at the Big Buddha in Chalong, too.

Can anyone help me out with my list? Bars, clubs, shops, churches, temples, whatever.....

    Many thanks

There is no such thing as a free meal :)
