Engine Room Hit As Fire Breaks OutAccording to initial reports, the projectile struck the rear section of the ship, heavily damaging the engine room and sparking a fire on board. The damage left the vessel unable to manoeuvre, forcing the crew to declare an emergency and abandon ship.

Given the hit was in the region of the engine room which is at the stern of the vessel its doubtful that it would be a mine, more likely a torpedo or a missile. If so it would seem like Iran is firing at anything they think they can hit, interesting to see what becomes of it as I cannot imagine the Iranian regime to be very sympathetic given their situation. Sad that it would appear 3 crew members have been killed in the explosion.

Yes I believe that is correct, typical chinese tactics! The "China Railway" & "China Engineering" companies have questionalable track records for build quality & safety proceeders so suggesting its an Italian partnership is a convenient distraction!!

Interesting reading all the comments here, but the real problem is that compromise is first hand nature in most SE asian countries. Just watch a so called tradesman work, short cuts are firmly lodged in his brain! Lack of proper training & poor education is where the problems start, then like this crane incident is there a "crane safe" institute in Thailand?? I bet not and as sadly shown here this is the outcome! I managed a crane company in Papua New Guinea where cranes & staff were certified which meant proper training with annual certifications of machinery & equipment & biannual refresher courses for staff & operators. My choice and not PNG law unfortunately which allowed the chinese companies to operate cranes in PNG and just like Thailand, no proper training and no certifications of both personal & equipment which resulted in the same! Its a cultural thing that needs to change and sadly Anutins reaction is probably one of appeasement and not to mention who's family owns Sino Thai !!

Sadly this is due to no safety standards imposed, the authorities have no moral obligations to enforce standards and unfortunately most of Asia has the same problem caused by lack of law enforcement and just plain lousy standards. Road traffic law enforcement is in the same slack predicament giving Thailand one of the highest road fatalities on the planet. These unfortunate deaths & injuries are the outcome! China being the emerging economic nation that it is should be leading the way in the region but they are no different to Thailand and regularly have the same disasters!!

Thailand accounts for less than 1% of the global population, around 80% of the global population are either fluent in English or speak English as their 2nd language. Of the remaining 20% which includes Thailand some speak a little English so why would the Thai government not make English in schools compulsory given not only the global trend but Thailand is hugely reliant on tourism!!

The tourist is correct given the dependancy Thailand has on tourism, but I guess the Thai elites are happy to keep the less educated the way they are and that means there will be more space at the trough!! Its a disgrace but then its not exactly a very moral world is it!!!

This is where the Thai authorities are doing the people an injustice, like it or not English is by far the most spoken language and Thailand is a tourist dependant nation! In Europe & Scandinavia as well as many other countries english is taught at a very young age where leaders recognise the advantage to both the nation and the individuals!! Maybe the hi'sos are happy to keep the majority at their current level of communication, I guess it means there is more room at the trough!

Maybe you are not aware but Thailands depends heavily on tourism of which 95% of tourists speak English!!
