I remember reading recently that despite tourists numbers being down and specifically Chinese, revenue per tourist was actually up which is what I have always maintained, that the majority of Chinese tourists spend very little in Thailand and a percentage of what they do spend ends up with Chinese owned business's in Thailand or prepaid back in China which basically means that the lions share of their trip expense ends up in China. Right now the Chinese economy is struggling and people dont have the money so why waste time and money targeting china?? That money should be spent on domestic infrastructure starting by upgrading ammenities in tourist areas so when tourist do come they can be internationally catered for. Right now the foot paths are a disgrace, public toilets rare and disgusting, you rarely see garbage bins, addressing the maize of spaghetti being the overhead wires for electricity and communication which are an absolute eyesore, road safety for drivers targeting tour operators and a push for the entire country to improve their communication skills, especially in English due to it being the most widely spoken language. Given Thailands reputation we all know that a large percentage of the 3.5 billion will end up in the fat cats pockets and in reality little will get spent on actually promoting Thailand, SADLY ITS ENDEMIC!!

I cannot think of a worse picture to showcase Thailands tourist sites! Chinese numbers are down and revenue is up which means Chinese generally speaking spend very little. If Indian numbers decline it will have a similar effect, numbers down but revenue per tourist up. So why dont they get wise and go after the tourists from the countries with the higher spend per tourist! But will they really do anything? If they are serious the authorities need to address the tourist rip offs, scams, safety, etc etc to improve Thailands image which is sliding fast.

Remember where we are, just another crazy scheme not thought through!! It may work on the eastern side but the logistics will always be a challenge, the western side is open sea so good luck with that!!!

Corruption is endemic in south east Asia and exists at different levels in most countries, developed and undeveloped.

If you have in fact done 400 plus dives then you would have been around a few novices who often struggle with buoyancy control and in doing so end up sticking a fin or their knee onto the reef/coal which causes damage to the often fragile coral. Having a camera and attempting to take pictures enhances their instability and also takes their focus off keeping their fins & knees etc off the coral. Having logged more than 3500 dives in Papua New Guinea I have seen this coral destroying practice many times and even from certified divers which you obviously are so you should really know this happens and support the law. I am sure other divers associations members would totally agree with this as most like myself are keen to preserve the reefs. I hope you are also!!!! Yes the dropping of anchors is devastating to reef life and the practice of the ill informed, uneducated & selfish!

Lets be honest, the level of corruption in Thailand is relatively high & wide spread with more interest in collecting brown envelopes than enforcing the laws so offering visa free to so many countries just opens the flood gates for all the riff raff to drift in and do what they like. The quality tourist over the quantity should be their focus and will automatically reduce these problems but the short sighted greed for money is just too much to resist and too difficult for them to foresee the future. They dont want the back packers but they want the Indians & Chinese, generally speaking the difference being the back packers generally behave themselves, stay longer and spend a similar amount on a daily basis, are not here to work illegally or involved in scams! Will the authorities ever wake up?

Thailand tourism despite its constant rants about Chinese tourists has always wished for quality tourists rather than quantity tourists and its very true which is the preferred tourist by the hospitality operators. So now 1 of these budget traveller countries is not coming they are squealing like stuck pigs!!! I say great, spend your time and effort attracting larger spending travellers !! BTW its April and bloody hot so maybe thats a contributing factor that these morons have overlooked!! Vietnam has the same issue!
