Are high end smartphones worth the money (to you)?
shdmn replied to impulse's topic in Mobile Devices and Apps
Not really, unless it's intentionall crippled on older models. I think Apple likes to do stuff like that, in addition to intentionally slowing down the CPU. -
Finance Foreign Nationals Face Account Bans in Bangkok Bank Crackdown

Thanks for the info. I just tried topping up in the AIS app through the Bangkok Bank app and it went through, so looks like my account still works. -
Nomad. It's cheaper than getting 5 years worth of METVs, only have to apply once, don't need to pay close attention to travel dates every (less than) 60 days, and also no need to pay close attention to the 6 month expiry date which starts from the day you are approved. Totally worth it imo.

I was in a similar situation 2 years ago. I had been on a 60 day multi entry tourist visa (METV) good for 6 months. I went to Vietnam for a couple weeks and by the time I got back my Visa had expired. I wasn't concerned because I assumed I could get a 30 day waiver on arrival. Instead, the female immigration officer almost denied me entry. Like you, I also had an onward ticket. I think that is what ultimately saved me. She never asked for it and seemed ready to deny me, so out of desperation I pulled that out and showed her, which seemed to be just enough to sway her. I still had a condo in Thailand along with a suitcase full of stuff I left there, so getting denied would have been a big problem. This was before the DTV, which I am now on, because I NEVER EVER want to be put in that situation again. My advice is to get the DTV even if you think it's overkill for your situation, just for the peace of mind and not having to worry or pay close attention to travel dates like you would with the METV. Also, keep in mind that the METV expiry date is 6 months after the day you get approved, not 6 months after the day you first enter Thailand. So if you apply and get approved a month before going to Thailand, it will only be good for 5 months after entry. If you get a DTV you basically don't have to worry about any of that stuff, beyond the 180 day thing, for 5 years. Totally worth it imo.

Finance Foreign Nationals Face Account Bans in Bangkok Bank Crackdown

You can't transfer money directly into them with Wise like you can a brick and mortar Thai Bank account. That is the key missing step that eliminates the middlemen and the fees that come with it. That is what I am able to do in the Philippines with GCash and Maya Pay. So far I haven't found anything like that in Thailand. So I would still need to bring cash or transfer cash for pickup, or use a foreign credit card. All of those things require more hassle and paying more fees. -
Report Expat Confusion Grows as Thailand Cracks Down on Helmet Law Violations

I would have no problem with this if they did it for everyone instead of mostly to just fleece tourists. I would also like to see them handing out 2k baht fines for bikes with illegal exhaust pipes while they are at it. -

Google Pay and cardless ATM withdrawals?
shdmn replied to agg211's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Any updates on this almost 2 year old thread? Found it by googling the subject? Now that Bangkok Bank is shutting down tourist accounts I need other options. Being able to do this instead this would be a good alternative for me if it was available. -

Anyone know if my Bangkok Bank Be1st debit/ATM card is supposed to work internationally? I've never tried using it outside of Thailand but according to their website it should work at any international ATM that displays the PLUS or VISA symbol. From what I have read, they are blocking ATM/debit card access but not online access to the account, so no way of knowing if I got blocked until I try use the card. -

So you haven't been there in 20 years and think you know what Pattaya is like now?? -
I was paying between 1500-2000p ($25-$35) a night for decent AirBnBs in Makati during high season (Jan-Feb). I can't find anything equivalent to that in Bangkok for less than $50 in low season (Sep-Oct). In high season it would be more like $60-$75 a night in Bangkok, so approx. twice as much as Manila. Manila prices don't seem to fluctuate much between low and high season. Less tourism I guess. Also, average air quality in the Philippines is much better Jan-Mar compared to Thailand. Air quality and high season prices are two of the main reasons I am starting to go to the Philippines more.

The biggest expense in Thailand is accommodation, not food. Looking at prices for tourist accomodation in Bangkok sure makes Thailand look expensive to me. Can't find any decent rooms in a reasonably decent location for under $50 a night. I am talking at least western 3 star western standard rooms in a reasonably convenient and quiet location. Same with AirBnB. This is for low season (Sept-Oct). High season it's much worse. Pattaya accommodation prices still look very reasonable for low season but Bangkok prices have definitely gotten out of hand imo. I am just talking tourist situations. So 6 months or less, not long term lease situations.

Thanks for the info. I am in this exact situation now where the passport # listed on my DTV eVisa does not match my renewed passport #, so I plan to do this on my next trip to Thailand. Anyone know what other documents the immigration office may require besides a printout of my DTV eVisa and copies and originals of my old and new passport?

Bangkok Bank ATM cash deposits denied

Try do 5 separate transactions of 9k baht next time, or just wait a few days for it to go through if you don't want to pay the extra fees. -

I guess you would not do so well in China then. All other Asian countries are looking to do the same thing. -

Are there any pay apps in Thailand equivalent to GCash/Maya Pay in the Philippines? Wise lets me transfer money into them just like any other bank account. I can then get a Gcash/Maya ATM/debit card and withdraw cash that way with little or no fees. If I can do the same thing in Thailand then I would not need my Bangkok Bank account. -

The only reason I have purchased the higher end phones (Samsung Galaxy S) in the past is because they support most of the international frequencies, so they will work well just about everywhere. Another reason to purchase them nowadays is because they support eSIM. -

How much were you trying to transfer? I had that problem when it was over 10k baht I think. After cancelling and trying again for 9k it went through in seconds. -
Transport Bangkok Cabbies Call for Grab Service Ban at Suvarnabhumi Airport
shdmn replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
If I was a cab driver, I would be more concerned about driverless taxis taking my job than Grab/Bolt. It's already starting to happen in some major cities around the world. -
Like the person you responded to says, there is no stamp/sticker involved so there is nothing to transfer. Not sure why so many people are confused by that. It's an eVisa in PDF format that you can just print out. It's NOT a stamp/sticker in your passport! I know some people are getting stickers when they do it in person in a consulate in Phnom Penh or wherever, but when I applied online through the official visa website I got a PDF file.
