Opinion Russian Teacher to Thais: Drop ‘Farang’ if 'Ni Hao' Offends
fredwiggy replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Show me how or don't assume, because if you actually knew, or actually understood what I know, you'd be very embarrassed and go running off to hide. For a very long time here, you have said the same thing, all the while being corrected by me. Not dismissed or argued with but corrected. You have a bad habit of assuming you know people here. I do what you probably don't do. I read up on many subjects, gaining knowledge in certain ones I'm passionate about, and know quite a bit about them. Then someone comes here and says I'm naive because they didn't understand what I was saying, or had so little knowledge about the subject and was only going by opinions from others, and that's the epitome of being naive. -

A deaf mute can't hear or speak. Someone who doesn't care to learn another language just feels they don't need it. Not a comparison. There are ways to communicate without needing to speak the language. Of course it's easier to learn it, but it isn't mandatory. -

Most of the Thai women that marry foreigners weren't bar girls either. They just had children with locals who didn't stick around long so they thought a foreigner would give them a better future. -

You need to remember, just because you've purchased women here, doesn't mean they're all bar girls or foreigners are bar girl buyers. It, again, is just a tiny fraction of all Thai women who live here. If you think I'm gullible, think of the opposite of that word and that's where I'm at. -

How do you know he can't speak Thai? How do we know you can? What does it matter anyway? If we're here, we're fitting in. Not speaking Thai isn't a factor in ability to stay here, nor is it when a Thai wants to live in another country and can't speak that language. -

She was never a bar girl or had multiple partners. She went to college and worked for CPAC and now for the government. Only a fraction of Thai women are workers in that regard. -

That's funny, I've heard that said about Trump supporters, although I didn't believe it because some of them are my relatives, and I don't generalize. -

Nothing about me that time. She's told them all along I'm good to her, so they have no ammunition. They have said she was not good because she had a boyfriend. That came from having a crappy husband for years who did very little and worse, and they felt since she picked a loser in the beginning, she didn't know what she was doing. They wanted her to be all by herself, staying home taking care of the house. Control. Talking to her like she was 17 and not in her 40's and very intelligent. When people that should love you say you're bad all your life, you end up believing it until you're shown otherwise. -

I'm civil to everyone. I know the damage they've done, and still do to her. I've done all I can to help her get stronger against others who talk down to her, and it includes her parents. Now she doesn't let things bother her so much as I've built her self esteem more, showing her she's much better than some think she is. The first time I saw her mom talk to her, 4 years ago, without knowing what she said, i saw fear and anxiety in her eyes, and she wouldn't look her in the eyes. Now it's a lot different. I asked her what he mom ws saying after she left and it was a series of putdowns. -

Google translate isn't much better. Sometimes it comes out very strange, especially if you try long sentences. -

It isn't hard to fake that you speak Thai to others on an online forum, as you know. -

Did I say I didn't know their names? Do you go to your girlfriend's (if you have one) parents and say sawadee krup so and so? No, even Thais don't do that. All you hear is sawadee krup or sawadee ka. -

I'll clear it up for you. Using farang when you're sitting there and they know your name is ignorance and laziness. Referring to foreigners as farang, to other Thais, isn't ignorance. It's the same thing if I was talking to another in the US about Thais. I would say "he was a Thai man". If I wanted to know someone, I would ask their name. If I saw a Thai walking down the street, I wouldn't point to him and say Thai, Thai, to my children or anyone else. I know the words for many foods here as I've been eating Thai for 7 years now. -

I couldn't live that way as I like communication. This is one real reason my ex and I had problems. She wanted someone to give her money and not talk, just like she has now with her new Polish husband, who speaks less English than I do. -

If they want to know my name, they'll ask. In all 4 + years I've known her, no one says anyone's names but just sawadeekrup or ka. I do say this with the wai automatically. Stop with the arrogance assumptions. You aren't there and only know the people that are around you, not any of the rest of us on this forum and what we do. -

Yes, and some are actually honest and tell you everything. Doesn't take too long to see a person for what they really are when you spend a lot of time with them. Most of what goes on here doesn't concern us anyway. There are many, many foreigners here who have wives and girlfriends who don't speak their language. It's always best to avoid toxic people wherever you are, and if you aren't accepted, you find a place where you are. -

Their conversations are the same as if I wasn't there. If they want to ask me anything, I answer them through her. It's arrogance to monopolize a conversation but not to sit in silence until someone wants to talk to you. Many people in social setting are quiet. That doesn't make them arrogant. -

I just say hi and Wai. They know I've been good to her all along. They think just like most Thais my age. They didn't like her husband because he was bad in many ways, so they look at all men as not good. At least until they prove themselves, but I'm a foreigner so you surely know how most old school Thais look at us. -

She speaks English so we speak English together. She doesn't need to explain everything because most of it doesn't involve me. If it does, she'll answer for me. Not a problem. -

Anyone can look up Thai English translating online on their phones. Anyone here can say they speak Thai and use what you just did. If you live here long enough you know many Thai words. If you want to learn Thai, you learn how to put them together. If you don't care to learn Thai, and still want to live here, you use your phone. If someone wants to ask me a question in a social setting, my girlfriend translates for me and I tell her what to say. They all know me, that I'm good to her, so I fit in. -
