I suspect that there will be an election (of sorts) in 2028. I also suspect that it will not be recognisable, certainly conducted very differently. I am also curious as to how the "discussions and ideas" on a "third term" pan out. I would not be surprised if the term limits question is decided in Trumps favour, albeit not using the conventional constitutional formula, that establishing a precedent which will allow the Presidency to be decided by Congress, probably by a simple majority vote in the Senate - so much easier to "manage"!

When Willful Ignorance is a Way of Life
herfiehandbag replied to Walker88's topic in Political Soapbox
30 odd answers, 6 or so suggest psychiatric disorders (I thought that moderation was putting a stop to that), at least another dozen of which were nothing more than abuse. Funnily enough, not one thought to tackle or heavens forbid refute the various points he made! This forum is broken. Ironically perhaps a metaphor for the mess which is US politics! -

Pedantic perhaps, but it is now turning out that less than 50% voted for Trump. So not really a minority... -

Calls for a New Election Surge Amidst Labour's Challenges
herfiehandbag replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Some interesting rumours swirling around on the internet that one Jeremy Clarkson has been arrested, or at the very least interviewed by the Police, over his involvement with the farmers protest. Of course it is the internet, and they really wouldn't be that daft would they? -
They had been the Royal family for getting on for 200 years or so when they changed their family name. Prior to that we had the Dutch (William and Mary), Scots ( Stuarts), Welsh (Tudors), for a long time the French (in the guise of the Normans. By my reckoning that makes Harold (the one that got slotted at Hastings in 1066) the last English monarch! There are many examples of bees in bonnets kicking around on these forums, but to claim that the current Royal Family (Windsors) are German really is a classic!

You seem to have missed that the "rightwing press" exists because an awful lot of people buy it. They buy it because they agree with what it prints. 🤔 I've put a confused emoji on to save you the trouble, poor fellow, you do seem to be so often confused by very simple points! -
Montreal Erupts in Violent Anti-Israel Protests

That is the claim of Hamas. I have been to the scenes of genocide, I have been to, and guarded the mass graves whilst the forensic reams did their work. That was in Former Yugoslavia whilst I was a soldier. Those were graves which contained at most hundreds of bodies at a time. The stench ( stomach turning, we literally vomited for hours on end) let alone the mounds confirmed what lay under the ground. That was hundreds. It, they, can't be hidden. There is nothing like that in Gaza, no burial pits, no mass killings. Do you think that a society like Israel, a democracy with an army largely composed of draftees and civilian reservists, a free press, huge use of social media and a population renowned for and disposed towards arguing and loud demonstrative debate, would, could, commit killings on the scale alleged, and manage to hide it? Gaza is probably at present the most surveilled parcel of land in the world, by satellites and electronic means, do you think killings on that scale could be kept hidden? There is no evidence. Civilians have died, in what is cynically described as " collateral damage" most often because of HAMAS's universal tactics of using them as shields for their activities, not in the numbers HAMAS claim. -
Whilst I agree that the provision of social care for the elderly has been sore neglected by governments, Tory and "New" Labour (remember them) over several decades, rat trap Starmer and his equally grim visaged aparatchnik acolytes levying additional taxes on a distressed service isn't going to help! Possibly the matter wasn't covered in the guidance notes binder for help desk operatives at Halifax Bank?

I understand that Mr Trudeau is intensely dislikes in certain quarters in Canada, but really, what did you expect him to do? Toronto to Montreal is 542 km, do you think he should have been leading a baton charge? Looking at the video clips, elements in this crowd came equipped to cause damage, the presence of explosive devices and prepared effigies (maybe there is a point to arts students after all) also indicates planning. Incidentally, if explosive devices are thrown at police, then the throwers should be shot in the act. "But it wasn't a very big grenade" is not an excuse. -

Musk & Ramaswamy Unveil Detailed Plan for Federal Workforce Cuts
herfiehandbag replied to Social Media's topic in World News
I am not an expert on the United States Constitution (that bit appears to be missing from my copy of the bible - I blame those bloody Chinese printers); but there again actually I am not convinced that many others posting here are, including some of the most enthusiastic supporters of Mr Trump! However, it is my understanding that matters of funding, staffing and management of Federal Agencies, including the creation of new government departments, are firmly in the hands of Congress, which rather reduces the status of Messrs Musk and Ramaswamy to the status of lobbyists! -

That should do wonders for government efficiency! I suppose you will always get bat<deleted> crazy ideas floating around on the fringes of a new administration, but unusual for them to come from the people in charge of the new department! -
The Herfiehandbag was the slang term for a six pack of Herforder Pils beer - a popular brew in the part of Northern Germany in which the British Army of The Rhine (BAOR) was based. It came in a small yellow cardboard box, with a carrying handle - hence the name "Herfiehandbag'. We were the fittest alcoholics in NATO you know!

It really is an astonishing ability, which could save huge amounts of money in the medical world if properly harnessed, this ability of some posters on here to diagnose complex mental conditions based on a few lines of script. Remarkable, and sadly it is all going to waste! Imagine, if it could be applied to other fields of human endeavour. For example, I am rather an enthusiast for the great steam locomotives of British railways in bygone days, especially the Great Western Railway locomotives designed by Churchward and Collett. I am not so impressed by the designs of Gresley (London and North Eastern Railway) or Bullied (Southern Railway) but have now realised that those individuals obviously suffered from grave psychiatric conditions!
