If it wasn’t so serious, it would be laughable. Exports tanking and they don’t have a solution. Bring the Baht down to Earth, and see what happens...
Problem is, the Baht is at its natural level against the worthless Pound, Dollar and Euro.
You have struggling economies, a lack of leadership and massive quantitative easing to paper over the cracks. With the commies out of control on the streets, the wheels are really coming off in the West.
China and Thailand must be lovin' it.

Well the pound is dropping against the Baht, so less pension for us .
And that's only going to get worse now that the communists are out on the streets and the UK Government looks weak and vulnerable.
I predict 30thb to the GBP this time next year.

Yep, time to rethink those foolish life choices.
I've been a businessman for many years in Thailand and seen more horror stories than I can count.
It has always perplexed me, and still does, why so many people try to swim against the tide here?
Owning land in company names, marrying to get a visa, paying for a Thai man's family, paying key money for businesses, operating illegal gambling and betting venues, getting involved in the sex for sale industry, and on and on it goes.
The thin line we walk in Thailand as Westerners is well known. We are barely tolerated, but some folk act surprised when they don't let married guys or retirees in?

More like wanting to go to suk soi 33 and Baccara!
Sukhumvit Soi 33 hasn't been a fun place since about 2010, and even back then it was in terminal decline.
Whole lotta fun in the late 90's and early 00's though, I'll give you that.
There were a few sois between Thong Lor and Ekkamai that had Japanese only clubs. Been in a few with Japanese business colleagues.
Sriracha is little Tokyo, loads of Japanese only bars, massage, clubs etc. for those working on the Eastern Seaboard.

I don't know Mr M, leaving to go to work seems pretty clever to me.
Not if you wanted to come back to Thailand it wasn't as is plainly evident now.

Thai Residency Rights........
Is the retirement extension to O-A visa in any group of people to be allowed in? I am stuck in Australia with extension due to expire 30th July 2020!!
Nope. Your visa will probably expire long before they allow you back in unfortunately.
The non-immigrant visa itself, even with extensions, gives no residency rights whatsoever and is merely a temporary extension of stay for purposes other than tourism.

I've been renting in BKK 5 years now, Non 0 visa - extensions based on retirement with multiple entry. Left BKK Feb. 17 to work, unable to return to Thailand after work. Has the Thai government even considered those with Non O retirement extensions???? Mine is still valid luckily. Has not been mentioned yet from what I have seen, should be grouped with the marriage visas yes ? Your thoughts Ubonjoe?
Retirees are considered 'temporary visitors for purposes other than tourism', so there's no priority there.
If you left for work, you are technically not really retired, are you?
In addition, leaving for an extended period of time in mid Feb really wasn't a very clever decision either.

I get the impression that someone ‘in a position’ came out of a meeting and made an announcement... and that was it... then came the infographics... clumsy, ill thought out, but Thai’s in an official positions love nothing more than something to stand next to and get their faces in the news.... who else other than Anutin....
His name is getting thrown around way too much recently, I predict a ‘fall from grace’ (as per Big Joke), the big gun doesn’t like others who make the news.
2000 spots - my guess is those figures were just pulled out of the air without any second thought.
My friends in govt. tell me he is being lined up for the top job after the General steps aside.
When that will be, nobody knows.

I would do the quarantine but I am not on the list of "preferred customers". I am a nobody inspite of my years fo spending all my money in Thailand. Ah well maybe time to look for a progressive country that allows foreigners to buy a piece of land and offers them residency.
That's the spirit!

Most have all their life in Thailand! (family or friend, house, belongings, ...)
Poor choice choosing to retire in Thailand given current circumstances.
I guess those stuck outside on retirement visas will not be coming back anytime soon...
Maybe time to plan a move elsewhere if able?

This is what people fail tor realize. The fallout from covid could be astronomical as many people may change their buying habits to now include only online purchasing, drinking at home, eating at home and not wasting money on ladies or gambling. Could be huge fallout.
Good point well made.

Just now, robblok said:I think most people would agree he should go to jail. Its more that many people doing far worse things never get punished. Especially if they are connected.
It was far worse than just false asset declarations, although that is all he was charged with in the end.
The robbery story hinted at by another poster is the key to understanding the events.

There's a lot more to that story, and he probably should have been inside for a lot longer.
A quick Google of his name, Supoj Saplom, will throw up all the information you need on this guy.

That expansion is part of the Eastern Economic Corridor which is written into the constitution.
They would have been sweating bullets that it went through without any delays...
The show must go on.

I remember when I came to Thailand in '85 on a package holiday with Kuoni. in their brochure it stated that they didn't consider Pattaya to be suitable for 'families'. Then again, it's possible to live in the Pattaya area and never even see the girly bar areas.
Thailand still has a reputation for that stuff, I think many Thais would like it if it could lose that ingrained image. And that is exactly what they consider to be 'wealthy tourists', not the usual demographic, i.e. backpackers or sex-tourists.
They can't come out and say it though.

She's got a house in Cambo, and so has Matt Dillon.
Her movie about the Khmer Rouge regime through the eyes of a child; First They Killed My Father, is on Netflix. Worth a watch if you are interested in regional history.
I should also have pointed out that Matt Dillon's City of Ghosts is one of my favourite movies ever. It is set in Bangkok and Phnom Penh. A couple of mates of mine had minor parts in it. RIP Snowy.

I get so sick of this rubbish. You have temporary permission of stay. What the F does cars and condos have to do with it. What is you're current permission of stay and re-entry permit state.
I live in bkk 7+ year with same partner. Defacto.
I would have zip chance to bring her to AU right now even if married. That's why I have extension based on retirement.
Yup, in a nutshell.
To all those moaning and whinging about how much money they have spent in the country and not being allowed back in, you must have been repeatedly warned about investing in Thailand, given your temporary status here and other factors; political, economic and cultural?
You've only got yourself to blame for not doing your due diligence and buying stuff in a country where you have almost no rights whatsoever.
Now that you are aware of this, what are you going to do about it?

Those with Marriage or Retirement extensions should be in a high priority category...much higher than simply 'anyone who wants to visit'. There are financial requirements and other responsibilities for those types of year-long extensions. Many of us, whether married or not, live there and have lives and families and responsibilities there. It seems rather easy. No clue why this should be so difficult to figure out. Of course have a mandatory quarantine and testing, all at the entrants expense, but for goodness sake...LET US COME HOME.
Has it ever occurred to you that maybe they are trying to subtly tell you something?
If it were me I would be planning my exit strategy not banging louder on the door to get back in.

They won't survive, it's that simple.
They can open the bars as soon as they want but if there are no tourists the market will whittle down those that rely on tourist customers and on operational turnover to pay monthly outgoings.
Businesses that rely on tourists are looking at a barren next six months, with a slow return to normalcy sometime next year at the earliest, possibly even later in 2022.
If they have not planned contingencies, it's all over.

Supreme Court’s verdict on 5 UDD core members expected Friday
in Thailand News Headlines

Quite. That was the Yellow Shirts that set the precedent for all the nonsense that was to come.
To think, it all started because the government of the day removed the incompetent (and allegedly corrupt) Viroj, CEO of KTB. He had forgiven Sondhi, the media mogul, personal debt of THB 1.2 billion, so Sondhi started a campaign to oust the government in revenge.
