Looking for something that doesnt exist
Fat is a type of crazy replied to bignok's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
You need a friend or two to chat with and talk some crap. Every friendship will involving times when you are bored or it seems they waste your time. You'll have to decide whether he has become too tedious but try not to burn bridges in life as once a friendship is gone it's gone. -

What do you look for in a hotel?

No family resorts with kids running everywhere thanks -
Fair point. I see Pattaya not as Disneyland but a pretty normal place in many parts but everything is close by. Would consider alternatives if I can think of them. Maybe I am talking about the broader area rather than central Pattaya. I like Thai people, you'll never find me trashing them hopefully, as I get older I am a bit less likely to become totally immersed into a new culture, enjoying it from a bit of distance living a bit of a western life, six month here and six months there.

What makes a man into fancy sushi and art house cinema and theatre and bands and culture etc spend 12 years in the middle of nowhere albeit a pretty middle of nowhere. Interesting. When I first planned to retire in Thailand I had a picture of fruit trees and forest with my girlfriend near Chanthaburi or something but the closer I get I think I want western comforts such as in Pattaya or Phuket.

How Thai people will see us foreigners
Fat is a type of crazy replied to newbee2022's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
My experience with wife and girlfriends families is we can often think too much. We ain't that special. If you try and act important and spend up they will enjoy your largesse but if you be yourself they will like you, or be bored by you, similar to how they are with each other. -
There have also been reports in News Corp alleging that Erin's ex husband Simon Patterson had told a friend he believed he had been poisoned by Erin in the past. In a social media post from June 2022 Simon said he almost died last year from gut problems that left him in intensive care. News.com.au can be biased for politics but ok for news reporting like this in my opinion. Even politics is not too bad on this site compared to other Murdoch sites such as The Australian, and state based papers such as Daily Telegraph, and Sky News. Big story in Australia along with women's world cup.

The percentage of suitable farangs who you can talk to will rise if you keep off topics involving right and left politics, gender, climate change etc where perfectly nice seeming people can take off and become over the top boring. In Australia it's easy as I have established boundaries between me and who I want to see and who I don't. If moving to Thailand on your own I imagine it takes time to work out what to do, who to talk to, and how to set up new boundaries if appropriate.

Good memories going to the Valhalla theatre in Melbourne. They would put out a poster each three months and student houses would have it on the wall. The 80's. The usual foreign films like Belle du Jour, Breathless, La Dolce Vita. Fun movies like John Waters Polyester, with a scratch and sniff card so you could watch in Odorama, and David Lynch's Eraserhead, and the Russ Myers movies such as Beyond the Valley of the Dolls were fun. Then there would be the worst movies of all time like Plan 9 from Outer Space. The 80's. Here is a cool Melbourne cinema. Different colours but here's pink. I lived around the corner from a nice art house cinema for 15 years till I met my Thai wife and we moved to the hills. Nicer than the picture.

I do have a theory that the most active here maybe the shyest and weirdest in real life. Because of the importance it seems to take. Many who post time to time seem the most normal. But who knows. I liked Yinn. It seemed like she was a she though the broken english did seem staged and didn't improve. Rumak said he met HER. -
You may deal with the dodgy side of the public service but as a career public servant I can confirm it can be an interesting, productive, and satisfying career. In my cases saving millions of dollars. Stopping illegal acts. Good work life balance, generous retirement superannuation, helping the good people of Australia. Sure many Thais the same. Not everyone wants to spend long hours selling something or other. Good for those who do. Public servants do have a life thanks.

Could be because in the morning you are hassled by the weight of expectations. From yourself and others. To many choices and decisions can make you lazy. What to do to feel productive as well as have fun. You noted you like being on a train. At night, or on a train, there's nothing much else to do but be and that can feel better. Excitement can come from freedom from expectations.

Not sure how you are getting to 50 per cent tax. The section on Dividends paid or credited to non-resident shareholders in the following may assist: Dividends and non-resident companies and shareholders | Australian Taxation Office (ato.gov.au) -
Are you a minimalist?
Fat is a type of crazy replied to georgegeorgia's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
So when you are in Issan with your mat and small drawer what then? Become a buddhist or something. I have posted this before on the god topic from The Onion. Something to consider. When I think back to my time on earth, I have few regrets. The path I took, the simple life of a monk, allowed me to achieve the highest state of enlightenment. As one who renounced worldly attachments, I was free to lead a contemplative existence and to then share my wisdom with others. That said, I have to admit that if I were to do it all over again, I would probably choose to have at least a few possessions. Not too many, of course. Maybe 10 possessions—20, tops. To be sure, desiring earthly possessions only binds one to this life, and all beings must free themselves from the shackles of materialism to reach nirvana. That’s why, if I were to have a few belongings, I’d limit them to just some essentials: a fan, perhaps, to cool myself with, or a candle, so I could continue my study of ancient texts when the sun goes down. It’s not as if owning a candle would’ve halted my spiritual awakening. How could it? It’s just a candle, right? I’ve always said that it is not objects themselves but our unwavering devotion to them that stands in the way of karmic progress and, ultimately, true awakening. With that in mind, I can’t help but wonder if it really would’ve been such a big deal if I’d had a pen or two to write with—not coveting pens or obsessing over them or anything like that, just having a reliable writing implement that’s great for copying down spiritual insights. If I lost the pen, I’d be absolutely fine with that, but there’s nothing about being liberated from the stranglehold of temporal attachment that says I shouldn’t be able to make a mark on a piece of paper. And come to think of it, a canteen would’ve been a huge help. I probably would’ve attained perfect enlightenment sooner—a lot sooner—if I hadn’t had to stop meditating beneath the Bodhi tree and walk to the river Niranjana every single time I got thirsty. I understand, perhaps better than anyone, how vital meditation is to finding the freedom that awaits us at the end of the eightfold path. And you know what would’ve made meditating a hell of a lot easier? A tent. Nothing big or ornate, just a humble cloth shelter to help keep the rain and wind off my body. It’s not as though a tent would’ve stopped me from teaching my disciples to forsake earthly things. I would just say, “Dispossess yourself of all things, except a tent. And maybe a blanket.” Pillows, an obvious worldly luxury, would be forbidden. Oh, you know what else would’ve been great? A tea kettle. I would have killed for a tea kettle. A sweater or a jacket really wouldn’t have been the end of the world either, and there’s also a lot to be said for a decent pair of shoes. And what harm would there have been in having, say, a flute? It’d be nice to unwind with some music at the end of a long day of rigorous reflection. Again, I’m talking about very modest possessions here. Nothing you couldn’t easily fit in a satchel, which, yes, would’ve been nifty as well. How about a little carving of a monkey? Honestly, I think it would’ve been fun to have had that to look at from time to time—a wooden one, nothing carved from precious stones or anything. I can’t imagine not being able to break free from the eternal cycle of death and rebirth because of a tiny monkey figurine, can you? If I’m being completely honest, it’s not just the lack of possessions I regret. I also probably spent way too much of my time on earth meditating. Just sitting there on the hard ground doing nothing but pondering the infinite day after day when there are so many wonderful things to see and do in the world. I could’ve meditated just once a week and probably been perfectly fine. What a waste. I lived 80 years, and frankly, I blew it. I should have just tried to enjoy myself. -
As a 17 year old I was quite taken by one of their last hits 'Come Dancing'. A nice simple ditty.
