Some people don't want to be socially acceptable, outgoing, building, networking, etc. One could say those people are autistic or somehow diminished or they could say they are relaxed, fairly peaceful, happy with themselves and know who they are. They may want to relax with a woman who lets them be who they are, and they will hopefully let the woman be who they want to be, and they may have different interests but hang out together. They want someone who will make them feel good, sex, good look after and who is pleasant to be with. In that context a bargirl with a lovely smile, who knows how good and bad people can be and appreciates someone nice, may hit the mark. There is a risk that such a person could be horribly damaged or they might have learned what's good and bad and important in life. So best to keep an open mind about any woman and see what happens. I have never been in a relationship or been with a bar girl. Probably due to a combination of common sense and being a bit staid in my ways. But I certainly don't think bad of those that do.

How long were you with her and presumably her kids if you don't mind me asking. It's hard to get the context otherwise.

I think you are being a bit romantic. Pretty normal now to find people who go here and there. I work in an office with normal folk and they will travel to places far more exotic than Ubon. It's been done. There's no stone unturned.

My hesitation to use stuff like this is the same as my hesitation to get map directions when driving. If I drive I like to work out where I am going and get there without being told step by step. You hear the stories of British tax drivers having a better or different developed brain than others. So long cut short I don't want to use too many helpers rather than my brain as it might limit the powers of the brain. It might take me to step 3 of a thought process i.e. save time but it might be better but slower to get there myself by thinking.

My ex thai wife likes Richie and Maybelle in Phuket. Fairly down to earth. Run a cafe. Not my cup of tea but nice couple. She also really liked this christian western lady with a thai husband with cute kids. Stayed in Koh Samui a lot I think. Nice hotels all the time. Talked about helping others. Set up a successful clothing business or something. Lots of views. Based on these two there are two ways to consider: Down to earth and simple and honest with a bit of humour. Or aspirational giving people something they wish they had and gives them an escape.

I had a flatmate who had heroin. Once a week or so. Still was effective at work. The cleaner the heroin the less damage done she said. But I have seen many who get so overwhelmed much more than other drugs. Hard to come back. Not sure legalisation is the best solution but decriminalisation for users seems to potentially work.

There's that couple that did videos. Holistic trainer. My ex wife calls them Beavis and Butthead. Aussie guy and Thai girl. She started all normal and shy but seemed to become popular and dressed all sexy. A bit over the top and inappropriate for the situation e.g. going to breakfast at the hotel but dressed for a nightclub. But good luck to her as she got popular. So if your girlfriend is really a hotty 9 out of 10 look out for a lot of attention. Most videos were dull content though. Going to the same places. Staying in hotel and getting excited over stock standard food.

So you had 6 months staying in a farm area wooing the girl. Or was part of it by line. She was no doubt impressed by your persistence

My 2 cents following from previous topic is: That resort on White Sand Beach is still basic but probably best section of beach on the island. KC Grande close. Kacha good too as noted. As low as 50 bucks AUD for Kacha on beach side room and breakfast on beach. Best beach for sports as wide and long of course. Nice resorts on Khlong Prou include at one end Paradise Resort and the new section on the other side of the road called Paradise Hill which has good facilities for kids and is a bit cheaper but you can use the facilities of the beach side resort. A strip of a few half decent restaurants but not much else. Santhiya Tree in the middle of Khlong Prou has beautiful new rooms. 10 minute walk from shops but regular shuttles. Near a waterfall too. 100 bucks. Room with pool and breakfast on beach. At the other end there is Dewa and Centara. Nice and not too expensive. If you want more basic and a bit fun Blue Lagoon is good near these resorts and seconds from the beach. Kai Bae probably has the best food options. As noted in previous topic Sylvan near Kai Bae is nice. 75 bucks AUD full sea outlook and breakfast with panoramic outlook. Beach has a few rocks but bits are clear. This and Santhiya Tree are good for impressing the ladies and are dirt cheap in low season.

I went in 1991 to the Air and Space Museum at the Smithsonian and saw an IMAX there. Seemed good at the time. Think it was Blue Planet.

If you want places that aren't amazing but are something: there's a beautiful waterfall near Pakse in Laos not far from Ubon, much bigger than ones I have seen in Thailand, as well as beautiful coffee plantations, even though I don't drink coffee, and a beautiful temple built into a hill not far away where my girlfriend and I had a big fight. In Uthai Thani there is my girlfriends main temple which inside has mirrors everywhere which is unusual like something out of Lost In Space and a temple on a big hill looking over the countryside.

It was always that way a bit - maybe you agreed with the status quo of how news had been reported in the past. But don't say Fox or other silly right wing sites are the same as others that may have an opinion but fact check and have editorial standards. My take is that Trump was so dumb that he managed to hit the sweet spot of not being smart enough to actually have a chance of overturning the government but being dumb enough to do enough to face serious charges that have a realistic chance of a guilty verdict.

I 'm staying there in a few weeks for a week. I have only been to Koh Chang once since covid and like you say it was pretty poor then too. There is a lady there who made a good som tam and sticky rice and fried chicken and soup my girlfriend likes. Hope she's there but low season seems to hit Koh Chang pretty bad now.

I think some posters are missing the point that this isn't a compliant about Thailand but a complaint about the regularity of boring topics, and the same boring comments, on Asean Now. It is a sign that it is time to log off and go for a walk in the sunshine and not come back for a while. Otherwise you start making boring comments yourself that you have made before. Similar to what I am doing now.

When I was but a 20 year old travelling on a raft and staying with hill tribes in Northern Thailand it felt like being on some sort of frontier. Even Koh Samui in huts felt exotic. Same with a trip through Myanmar where in the limited time frame you could really go to out of the way places. Pagan was untouched and beautiful and fun to explore on bikes. Travelling from Jakarta to Timor felt unexpected travelling from Muslim to Hindu to Christian areas. No contact with home for months. So now when I think about Thailand I accept I might see some nice scenery or a nice temple or meet some nice people, but I end up booking Koh Chang or similar as there is still a lot of beautiful nature, and I don't sense that Thailand has a frontier that will wake me up like travels of the past.
