Biden's News Conference: A Mix of Defiance and Missteps

OK. I thought YouTube is blocked in China if that's where you are. If you really got stuck I was going to offer to make an mp3 of the Presser which you could download from here or PM. Transcripts are always subject to opinion when dealing with a mumbler -- the NY Times and the White House are still venting on "goodest" vs. "good as" which is still jumbled anyway. -

Biden's News Conference: A Mix of Defiance and Missteps
jerrymahoney replied to Social Media's topic in World News
From NY Times: After initially reading from a teleprompter then repeating his vow to stay in the race, Mr. Biden tried to defuse some questions about his age and fitness for office, but at one point fumbled a question about Vice President Kamala Harris, saying that he “wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president” if he didn’t have confidence in her. That came shortly after he introduced President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine as “President Putin” at a NATO meeting Personally, whatever coherency was exhibited today, this is a 4-year job starting JAN 2025. -
Fifth Congressional Democrat Publicly Calls for Biden to Step Down
jerrymahoney replied to Social Media's topic in World News
That's the rub -- up until the debate, the media was almost All Trump All the time: Stormy Daniels and his criminal trial in NY, the Fani Willis peccadillos, Judge Aileen Cannon rocking the boat in Florida, Jack Smith not being so nimble in Washington DC, etc. Trump really had no primary competition save Ms. Haley's tepid attempts. And Trump left little media oxygen in the room for Biden and his nanny Dr. Jill. -

Fifth Congressional Democrat Publicly Calls for Biden to Step Down
jerrymahoney replied to Social Media's topic in World News
NYTimes this AM: Pelosi is the most senior Democrat to signal he could still drop out. Here’s the latest. President Biden on Wednesday faced a fresh wave of pressure to end his campaign or rethink his decision to run for re-election, as Democrats from Hollywood to Capitol Hill aired grave concerns that he is set to lose to former President Donald J. Trump in November and drag his party’s chance of controlling Congress down with him. Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, the former House speaker and a longtime Biden ally, gave the strongest public signal yet that Democrats are still divided on Mr. Biden’s insistence that he is staying in the race, saying that “time is running short” for him to make a decision. Also ABC anchor apologizes: The ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos was surreptitiously recorded on Tuesday saying that he did not believe that Mr. Biden could handle another term in office. Mr. Stephanopoulos publicly apologized later, saying he shouldn’t have “responded to a question from a passerby.” Biden will sit for another major network interview on Monday with NBC. The president will tape an interview with the NBC News anchor Lester Holt on Monday in Austin, Texas, the network said on Wednesday. NBC plans to air the interview “in its entirety” that evening at 9 p.m. Eastern, a similar prime-time placement as ABC’s interview with Mr. Biden that aired last Friday. Mr. Biden has been under pressure from allies to appear in more unscripted settings with journalists, to show that his poor performance at last month’s debate — where he at times struggled to deliver cogent statements — was, as he has argued, merely one “bad night.” In its announcement on Wednesday, NBC took pains to say that it would also release “the full interview and unedited transcript” of Mr. Biden’s appearance with Mr. Holt. The transcript of Mr. Stephanopoulos’s interview became the subject of a kerfuffle over the weekend, after the White House urged the network to change the word “goodest” to “good as” in its initial transcript of Mr. Biden’s remarks; after its own editorial review, ABC agreed. -

Well OK but there is only so much you can learn from the sidelines. Some of this reminds me of the old American comedy team Burns and Allen where George asks Gracie: So how is your uncle Fred in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. And Gracie rambles on for the next 5 minutes while George smokes his cigar. -

Carville calls for Clinton, Obama to help select fresh options to replace Biden 07/08/24 3:20 PM ET Carville said in an op-ed in The New York Times on Monday that he expects Biden will drop out of the 2024 race, saying it will only take time before the president will bow to pressure from Democrats and public and private polling. He also wrote that the sooner this happens, the better. ... “We’ve got to do it out in the open — the exact opposite of what Donald Trump wants us to do,” Carville said. “For the first time in his life, Mr. Trump is praying. To win the White House and increase his chances of avoiding an orange jumpsuit, he needs Democrats to make the wrong moves in the coming days — namely, to appear to rig the nomination for a fading president or the sitting vice president or some other heir apparent.” https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4760440-carville-democrats-clinton-obama/ -

When I went to the US Embassy Bangkok to get the affirmation to marriage doc, the options were 5. My marital status is: Divorced Widowed Single (Never married) I checked Single (Never married) When I handed the form to the old-hand consular officer, he looked at it and said: Are you sure you want to check that box that at age 70 you've never been married. NEVER? Here in Thailand, first one for me, anywhere. Ever. -

Maybe it's a bit early for your "only one captain of the ship" spiel. As best a I can tell from his posts, the OP guy has maybe never even been to Thailand. -
Re the "as long as I gave it my all" Biden comment above, this from the David Mamet script for the Paul Newman movie The Verdict (1982) with James Mason here at his slimiest: I'm going to tell you something that I learned when I was your age. I'd prepared a case and old man White said to me, "How did you do?" And, uh, I said, "Did my best." And he said, "You're not paid to do your best. You're paid to win."

‘Goodest Job’ or ‘Good as Job’? The White House Wants a Word. ABC News tweaked its transcript of an intriguing moment in its Friday interview with the president after the Biden administration and news outlets raised questions. “I’ll feel as long as I gave it my all and I did the goodest job as I know I can do, that’s what this is about,” Mr. Biden said, according to the official transcript that was distributed by ABC on Friday night. ABC’s standards team decided to review the audio after receiving queries on Saturday from the White House along with several news organizations, asking whether Mr. Biden had said “goodest” or “good as,” according to a person briefed on the network’s discussions. After conducting its review, the network decided to adjust the transcript and append the editors’ note, the person said. The network did not modify the audio and video of the interview itself. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/06/us/politics/biden-goodest-transcript.html

From 1974 Sport: Walton: Basketball’s Vegetarian Tiger FEBRUARY 25, 1974 12:00 AM EDT Oregon State was coming to town for an important game, so U.C.L.A. Center Bill Walton prepared in typical fashion. He began each day with his regular breakfast diet of yogurt, cottage cheese, nuts, cereal, raisins, seeds and honey. He rode his ten-speed bicycle to the beach and contemplated the Pacific. He took his weekly acupuncture treatment: needles in the ears or legs to relieve pain from tendinitis in his knees. https://time.com/archive/6816999/sport-walton-basketballs-vegetarian-tiger/ (Bill) Walton died from colorectal cancer at his home in San Diego, on May 27, 2024, at the age of 71. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Walton -

Has the OP really ever been to Thailand? When I lived in Khon Kaen there was a group of French gents who met every morning -- I once tried to say Hello! but the gent said no English whether he could or not. But I was friendly with one of the Frenchmen who owned a restaurant I used to visit. Maybe you can find such a French underground in wherever it is you tend to at least visit Thailand in the next 5 years.
