  1. There’s no way to tell if it will work on China. Just be prepared for the worst. As far as outside China, it absolutely will not work outside China unless you have a Chinese ID card (meaning you are a chinese) I am very surprised you were able to register at all for WeChat outside China. I could only do so once I was in China,
  2. Nobody uses the website banking apart from geriatrics. The phone app is more secure and useful.
  3. I think quick pay lets you QR code pay without entering your password.
  4. Have you ever heard the expression “no good deed goes unpunished?” I think you’re making a hassle for yourself for no good reason.
  5. He did that. That’s what the story is about 🤔
  6. None of that is normal. It was easy to set up the app. I even managed to move it to another phone in Australia when I bought one there.
  7. I never understand people that criticize somewhere for being inexpensive. Go to Manhattan if you want expensive. Although from what I hear, Phuket is hardly cheap these days.
  8. There are several threads that report that Thai tax offices are not honoring DTAs. Best to just keep up on your U.S. taxes and ignore the Thai situation unless they magically become competent. It sounds like you aren’t bringing much into Thailand anyway and what you have has already been taxed, so you shouldn’t have trouble down the line if they ever grow a clue at TRD.
  9. I doubt they will care, whether the DTA is presented to them in Thai or not. They’d probably say something ridiculous like you have to pay them and then you have to get the money back from your government. Best avoid them. Literally just sitting on a bar stool drinking a warm chang is a better use of time.
  10. Clearly expats in general need to stay away from TRD and not worry about the tax issue, particularly if their income in exempt. There might be other more complicated scenarios for business owners or something but I’m not speaking to that. The rumors and hysteria are not doing anyone any good. I’m glad I was in Thailand less than 180 days in 2024, not that it would have mattered.
  11. I saw something like this happen at a 7-Eleven in Hua Hin. An older foreign man claimed he paid 1000 baht, but I was behind him in line and he hadn’t. I think in that case he was just an idiot though.
  12. I think it varies because banks have different policies about debits to the accounts. Some of mine are instant, others take a week.
  13. Im going to post and gloat in May when nothing has happened.
  14. It doesn’t work for ACH anymore only IAT and to my knowledge no retail US bank offers that. The guy with the the Vanguard account, are you sending IAT or Swift?
  15. People speak as if consumption taxes “don’t count” or something but if they really knew and counted how much they spend on taxes for alcohol, cheese, vehicles, plus VAT, plus a bunch of other taxes they would see that already pay a lot. no “free rides” are happening.
  16. Why does he have so much cash laying around?
  17. It’s not a question of sensitivity. It’s practical. My conception of money isn’t tethered to some far away land. I’ve been in Thailand for more than 20 years, most of them time working and earning a salary in Thai baht. The existence of America doesn’t factor into what I consider expensive, the local economy does. If America sank into the sea like Atlantis, would you pick some other place to anchor your conception of prices? If so, why not pick Thailand?
  18. I have several accounts connected to Wise with Plaid. Different accounts take different amounts of time. From my Citi account is takes a week, from Bank of America, just seconds. So try opening an account with a different bank.
  19. The existence of Yosemite Park justifies price discrimination in Thailand? How is that a sane thought?
  20. I wish Bangkok Bank did that. Instead that’s a “Thais only” feature
  21. My Bangkok Bank debit card has my name on it. I got it from the Bangkok Bank branch at the end of soi 6 in Pattaya. My home branch is in Bangkok. They tried to discourage me, and it took a week of waiting but I came back and they had a new debit card for me with my name on it, including full middle name.
  22. Do Thai people actually drink red fanta or do they only offer it to spirits? And why do they suppose spirits like red fanta anyway?
  23. What is the most common higher displacement motorbike in Thailand? 125cc plus, but hopefully more like 250cc It will be Thai mechanics working on it so I want something they will have experience with and parts for.
