Incredible US banking ineptness

They do, but I’ve always thought it was not a good idea compared to a traditional account. At least Citi is too big to fail, no matter how useless their call centers. -
Incredible US banking ineptness
Everyman replied to jaywalker2's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
I have several real Citibank credit cards and accounts. Nine out of ten representatives in those Filipino call centers are useless idiots. They know nothing, have no power or common sense and just waste your time. -
Thai Benefits vs Taxation.
Everyman replied to chiang mai's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
The reason health insurance prices are so high for foreigners is because in the last 15 years or so, hospitals (including government ones) have realized that is another way to rip off foreigners and charge them far more than Thais for the same treatments. That “25%” more value is the minimum. Hopefully nobody will respond with a silly argument like “it’s still cheaper than America” or “it’s only fair since you are a guest in their country.” I get tired of reading that crap. 🙄 But anyway, I think it’s reasonable to say that if there are any new taxes, foreigners will get Absolutely Nothing out of it. -
Baht strength - How long?

It’s amazing the number of people who think they can predict exchange rates. The whole point of the Wise account is it lets one exchange between currencies whenever desired. But isn’t that just amateur currency trading? If people are really doing so well with that strategy they could be making a lot of money trading more formally on Forex markets or something. More likely, I think doing so provides a sense of gratification and that like gamblers people tend to only count their gains. Now some people will insist that really do have genuine gains this way. Great. Go trade Forex. -
Do you owe money?

Not to get sidetracked, I guess the point I’m making is that intelligence and education do not mean a person will be wise financially. It’s not really about women. -
Do you owe money?

I have a family member who is a medical doctor. Her finances have been a disaster her entire life. The only reason is isn’t broke is because of her huge income. But even after working as a doctor for decades, her net worth is almost zero. -
Do you owe money?

I have perfect credit and about 15 credit cards. None of them have a balance. I get new credit cards to get signup bonuses and then I stop using them. After a few years the banks cancel them automatically. -

Just because I can borrow money, doesn’t mean I do. -
Has it occurred to nobody that allowing pretty much any government official in every country in the world to access the financial records of anyone in the world is a massive national security issue. To be more clear, do you think that the U.S. government is going to let some tin pot official in Cambodia or Thailand or Iran to access financial records of FBI agents, US senators, or soldiers? With enough analysis there is a lot of information that could be learned this way. Applying Occam’s razor, a sensible explanation is that it doesn’t work that way, and just because someone works at the revenue department doesn’t mean they can see all your financial information in another country.

About 10 years ago there was supposed to be an agreement to allow any citizens of any ASEAN country to work in any other ASEAN country. There were big meetings about it between the respective countries, School curriculums were focused on it. “Preparing for ASEAN.” What happened in the end? Nothing at all. Which is exactly what will happen with this tax thing. In two years a few people will still be waiting for “an announcement in November” or whatever and supposed experts will still be peddling bull<deleted> and speculation but in the end nothing will happen. Eventually everyone will forget about it and move on to the next thing.

Western Union better than “Wise”
Everyman replied to Everyman's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
I’ve been using Wise to send money from that same account for at least five years. Yesterday the time required jumped from seconds to six days. -
It’s likely that paying in installments at that shop is completely separate from paying with a credit card. they require you make the installment payments with a credit card? what sense does that make? more likely, installment payments are unavailable to you and they suggested using a credit card instead.

world wide income taxation update
Everyman replied to Presnock's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Notwithstanding how unlikely it is this will go anywhere, doing so really undermines their attempts to attract “high net worth” individuals. Rich people aren’t going to expose themselves to the whims of revenue department auditors. They will stay out of Thailand for the required 187 days or whatever the number is and spend their money somewhere else. All this will do is take money out of the Thai economy. -
I didn’t say they don’t smile and it isn’t prompt. I said what i said.

1. Arrive at the restaurant and are either ignored or ordered to sit down. 2. Presented a menu and expected to “MAKE UP YOUR MIND RIGHT NOW AND ORDER IMMEDIATELY OH MY BUDDHA WHY ARE YOU TAKING SO LONG.” 3. Staff run off as soon as you order one thing. So you have to get up and chase after them to them the rest of your order. (in the case of western food) 4. Staff deliver your food requiring that you acknowledge them and interrupting your conversation to do so but then run away like the devil himself is chasing them. 5. Staff disappear or engage in a very noisy conversation with the fellow staff and never check on anything. 6. You could wait all day for them to bring your bill but they never will. You have to stand up like you are going to leave. I know someone will say “oh no Thailand is not like that at all.” sorry. i don’t believe you. someone will say “oh they’re not professional staff in Thailand they’re just helping out.” really? more like they don’t care are you are making excuses for them.

Keep in mind the USA is NOT a member of CRS. Thailand don’t have a clue about your American accounts unless you tell them. If you are staying current on your U.S. taxes, combine that with the exclusions for dual tax agreements, unless you are remitting huge sums you have basically zero chance of anyone in Thailand getting at you for taxes.
