  1. I don’t know if there is a limit but I’ve used it probably 60 times in a month and never been charged anything.
  2. Thank you. I emailed that email address and they activated roaming.
  3. I need to receive an OTP (one time password) from Bangkok Bank but I am currently outside Thailand. How can I receive the OTP or enable roaming at least? I can’t login to the AIS app because it requires, guess what, an OTP.
  4. Typically commercially produced beer in most countries in Europe for example is just pasteurized and doesn’t have other preservatives. It’s commonly said however that Thai beer has preservatives in it to keep it from spoiling when left in the heat and sun. It’s also said that this is the origin of the bad hangovers from Thai beer as well as the odd flavor, even for “international” brand like Heineken. There’s an obvious difference between the taste of a Thai heineken and one from the Netherlands or anywhere else for that matter. Anyway…are there in fact preservatives in Thai beer that are uncommon in Europe? If you have not heard about the preservatives, that’s fine, but I’m interested in getting to the truth of the matter about whether they’re in there or not.
  5. There’s no way the fed can fix its mess without raising interest rates higher than inflation.
  6. All fools that thought the US Federal Reserve was done raising interest rates are now realizing that rates will be north of 7% in a year.
  7. Assuming someone already has a degree in their respective teaching subject (but not education), What is the cheapest, easiest, fastest course that satisfies the ministry of education and krusapa requirements for a full teacher’s license? I realize that may be three different answers, but I think you see what I am getting at here. I hope this won’t devolve into a discussion of the educational merits of such a certificate in general. I have had enough school. I just want the certificate with the least possible difficulty and expense. Thank you
  8. I am not aware of any US bank that will do an international ACH transfer. Only domestic ACH and wire transfers. Bangkok Bank will reject domestic ACH as per their new policies to comply with stupid new laws.
  9. Indeed. You don’t just “wear nice shoes” or “bring a Thai.” That doesn’t change the requirements. Also, if you have an account you expect to be unused for awhile, you can cancel the debit card so that there is no fee for the account. You still have to maintain a minimum balance for the account to not be considered inactive. I think that’s 3000 baht. But I think in principle if you have no card on the account and say a 4000 baht balance you can leave the account for 5 years and it should be okay.
  10. I would like to know of a single bank that does international ACH for retail customers.
  11. I like to stand at bars for my own reasons. Why do bar staff INSIST that I sit down? They will stand next to me telling me to sit down, over and over and over again. “You can sit down.” “I know.” ”Sit down.” What is the deal with this? I hate explaining it over and over again, I’m thinking of making up cards in Thai to hand to them so I don’t have to do that. Why do they lose their <deleted> if don’t sit down?
  12. I’ve been turned away from about 7 branches and told I cannot open an account there on a tourist visa, only a “one year visa.”
  13. Is there anyone on this forum under 70? Learn to use technology, without it you’re basically crippled.
  14. I’ve heard from someone that there is now zero nightlife in Vientiane whatsoever. Is this true?
  15. Figure out the number 1 place you want to work and show up there. It may take a couple of visits. Convince the boss you should work there. The easiest way is to make them like you and that’s easier than it sounds. Ask them for a very small favor, like a drink of water. They will rationalize that they did you the favor because they like you. Then confirmation bias will take over and they will have a “good feeling” about you without knowing why. But you have to literally show up, Thai people are intimidated by the idea of responding to emails in English. Showing up in person will also let them see that you are Thai.
  16. You should be able to do it yourself at Bangkok Bank and without buying the insurance policy. You might need a bunch of documents. Otherwise you could get a 3 month NON-O outside Thailand.
  17. Sorry, maybe I miscommunicated but I did not try any Bangkok Bank branches since I already have an account with them. But they do say on their website that they open accounts for tourists and there are recent anecdotal reports to that effect on the internet.
  18. It is no longer possible to open a Thai bank account on a visa waiver stamp except (maybe) at Bangkok Bank. I have tried at more than 40 branches in 5 provinces. Krungsri, SCB, Krung Thai and Kasikorn have all told me very consistently that it was possible on a waiver stamp or tourist visa but no longer is. Now you need a “one year visa.”. You are wasting your time telling them that you need a bank account to get a one year visa. Might as well speak to them in Swahili. An agent will undoubtedly use Bangkok Bank and it may not change the requirements, just that they will speak to the branch staff on your behalf which is probably unnecessary. Anyway the short version is try different Bangkok Bank branches until you get one that is cooperative.
  19. Two years ago I bought an AIS Net Marathon SIM. 1790 baht for 100 GB per month, for a year. That works out to be about 150 baht per month. After a year, I was offered the option to renew for the same price. This I did. I was hoping that as the third year approached, I would be offered the same deal. Alas I was not, and that package has sadly now expired. Is there a way I can get it back, absent buying a new Net Marathon SIM? If that is impossible, then is there an equivalent monthly package? I looked at the packages available on the AIS app and they were all <deleted> except a “special” offering. That is 100GB for 30 days for 300 baht, but that is double the price I was paying so obviously that isn’t as good. It’s not important to me whether it’s 5G or 4G since I was getting about 70 Mbps with 4G and that is plenty fast enough for my purposes. I use about 50GB per month so that’s the bare minimum. I’m using an iPhone 12 if that will make a difference to any suggestions. Thanks
  20. USAA ATM fee reimbursement is down to $10 a month, so if you are making more than one withdrawal then you are going to pay some of the fee for the second withdrawal.
  21. To my knowledge the US embassy does not issue such letters. But is good to know that it is not outright prohibited at Bangkok Bank to open accounts for people on visa exempt stamps.
