  1. Who cares about America? We are talking about Thailand.
  2. I thought it was 250 already. Any fee that targets foreigners and not Thais, is popular in Thailand.
  3. I never said getting rid of the tax cuts by themselves would balance the budget. And I know the cuts didn’t only apply to the wealthy, I’m just wondering how the media will present it after 8 years of telling that lie.
  4. Hopefully the “BBB” will die anyway, and the tax cuts will expire. The US needs the increased revenue to balance the budget. We have been hearing for years that the those cuts only applied to wealthy people so it won’t hurt anyone else, right?
  5. There are no new tax implications. It was hysteria cooked up unscrupulous tax consultants. Yes I know there were changes in paper, but no enforcement and they are already walking it back.
  6. The Bangkok Bank app is slower than other apps on my iphone 16 pro but it’s not bad at all. I think you’re right, people want new apps to run great on their android phone that they bought for 2500 baht 5 years ago.
  7. I find that most vendors in Thailand don’t take credit cards or charge a fee to use one that negates the cash back I get. They take cash or scan pay. How do you use a credit card everywhere?
  8. I know a lot of people that are having a meltdown about the move to electronic forms of payment. It seems to be based on conspiracy theories about banks. You are quite right that those people are going to be screwed moving forward.
  9. That was also my experience.
  10. You must have a POS Android phone. The BBL app works well on iPhone.
  11. This is the Aranyapratet-Poipet border, right?
  12. I respect Thai culture and customs. I don’t obsess about half baked, unenforced bureaucratic nonsense that is in the process of being reversed. If you want to feel like a good person, donate some money to a needy temple. Part of adapting to Thailand is understanding why Thais aren’t bothered by silly requirements. It’s because they know it’s crap. Follow their lead. Adapt their culture. Be more Thai.
  13. You wouldn’t believe how many things are illegal in Thailand. If the police enforced every law, the country would be unlivable. As far as having a special responsibility to obey laws that Thais don’t, who are you trying to please? Buddha? If general Thai people don’t care and the police don’t care and the government doesn’t care, are you trying to earn a medal or something? Just relax and live your life
  14. Why is anyone still concerned about this? There has been zero enforcement and are walking back the provisions already. It’s a ghost of a nothing burger.
  15. Can you provide details of how you make the calculations?
  16. If she isn’t Thai then she might find it difficult to open any sort of account right now.
  17. The restrictions on transfer amounts to those banks is enough reason to avoid them, by itself. Kasikorn is very popular. I often pay freelancers with scan pay and they have the KBank app 75% of the time.
  18. I don’t know about other banks, but I managed to move the Bangkok Bank app to a new phone in Australia when I got one there.
  19. The whole bill is an ugly mess. Congress should just let the tax cuts expire. The government needs more revenue. What I find weird in the press in that when criticizing the bill they call the tax cuts “for the rich.” Yet when the consequences of allowing the cuts to expire are discussed, they say it would raise everyone’s taxes. It surely can’t be both.
  20. yes because the immigration officer’s name is written on it.
  21. I put more stock into such threads when there is a technical explanation rather than a social one. For instance, I have never had a problem with Wise, but I always use the phone app and never transfer from a PC. I do see people claiming they “have been in Thailand 30 years and never been ripped off by a taxi or tuk-tuk.” I am sure those people are lying, probably about being in Thailand at all. Thai people are regularly ripped off by taxis, so maybe those enlightened foreigners can teach Thai people how to do it.
  22. That sucks but it clearly only affects money sent by non-U.S. citizens. Still I had to find a different article to read that, since the NY Times article kept blathering on about Africa instead of the details of the bill. So for US citizens sending money to Thailand it will mostly be a matter of proving US citizenship. Still, better the bill not pass at all.
